Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Psychology - Miscellaneous, grade: 1.7, Technical University of Munich (Lehrstuhl fur Technische Dienstleistungen und Operations Management), course: Technische Dienstleistungen und Operations Management, language: English, comment: Dies ist eine experimentelle Arbeit, die an der Technischen Universitat Munchen durchgefuhrt wurde. Es handelt sich um menschliche Entscheidungsprozesse, die anhand Heuristiken analysiert worden sind., abstract: Till now operations management mainly dealt with finding appropriate models to facilitate decision making processes, but these theoretical concepts did not always help to deal with actual processes in practice. Thus the understanding of human behaviour becomes more and more important. Furthermore the behavioural aspect of the decision making process plays a big role, as everyone of us would face resource allocation situations or portfolio decisions and people always do not make optimal decisions as mathematical models would do, but rather a completely another way often based on heuristics. Therefore it is interesting to investigate how people tackle such decision making situations intuitively and which cognitive strategies they follow thereby. This work aims to give a detailed overview about the relating literatures at first. Then decision making processes in portfolio decision situations are experimentally investigated regarding to behavioural aspects, in this case concerning knapsack problems, with the application of the methodology verbal protocol analysis. Concrete heuristics which subjects were following during the decision process could be identified and classified under the terms of certain criterions for further analysis. Hereby verbal protocol analysis helped to collect good and applicable data for determining specific behaviour of people in portfolio decision processes."

Book excerpt: This research examined information overload in decision makers by means of a human information processing model developed by Schroder, Driver, and Streufert. That model provided that the ability of an individual to integrate data into a decision varied in a curvilinear fashion with the complexity of the information environment. Information processing capacity was hypothesized to increase up to a certain optimum level and then decrease, marking the onset of information overload. A policy capturing exercise was employed to measure the amount of information processed for three different levels of information availability. Subjects were given sets of four, six, or eight national problem areas along with hypothetical priorities that the federal government was said to attach to those problems. The subjects indicated their levels of agreement or disagreement with each set of priorities. Regression analysis was then used to discover how many of the available problem areas contributed significantly to the three sets of decisions. The information utilization patterns were compared to the predictions of the model.

Book excerpt: Human decision making involves problems which are being studied with increasing interest and sophistication. They range from controversial political decisions via individual consumer decisions to such simple tasks as signal discriminations. Although it would seem that decisions have to do with choices among available actions of any kind, there is general agreement that decision making research should pertain to choice prob lems which cannot be solved without a predecisional stage of finding choice alternatives, weighing evidence, and judging values. The ultimate objective of scientific research on decision making is two-fold: (a) to develop a theoretically sound technology for the optimal solution of decision problems, and (b) to formulate a descriptive theory of human decision making. The latter may, in tum, protect decision makers from being caught in the traps of their own limitations and biases. Recently, in decision making research the strong emphasis on well defined laboratory tasks is decreasing in favour of more realistic studies in various practical settings. This may well have been caused by a growing awareness of the fact that decision-behaviour is strongly determined by situational factors, which makes it necessary to look into processes of interaction between the decision maker and the relevant task environ ment. Almost inevitably there is a parallel shift of interest towards problems of utility measurement and the evaluation of consequences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you aren't using the term naturalistic decision making, or NDM, you soon will be. Even as a very young field, NDM has already had far-reaching applications in areas as diverse as management, aviation, health care, nuclear power, military command and control, corporate teamwork, and manufacturing. Put simply, NDM is the way people use their experience to make decisions in the context of a job or task. Of particular interest to NDM researchers are the effects of high-stake consequences, shifting goals, incomplete information, time pressure, uncertainty, and other conditions that are present in most of today's work places and that add to the complexity of decision making. Applications of NDM research findings target decision aids and training that help people in their decision-making processes. This book reports the findings of top NDM researchers, as well as many of their current applications. In addition, the book offers a historical perspective on the emergence of this new paradigm, describes recent theoretical and methodological advancements, and points to future developments. It was written for people interested in decision making research and applications relative to a diverse array of work settings and products such as human-computer interfaces, decision support systems, individual and team training, product designs, and organizational development and planning.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents an investigation of human-model interaction in relation to model-centric decision-making. Models are abstractions, or simplifications, of reality that humans use to augment their ability to make sense of the world, anticipate future outcomes, and make decisions. This thesis focuses on models that aid decision-making in the design and operation of technological systems. Model-centric engineering is transforming traditional engineering towards a paradigm of comprehensive, integrated model use throughout the lifecycle of complex systems. This model-centric shift aims to increase the efficiency and efficacy of system decision-making. Without appropriately considering and designing for the human element, however, model-centric engineering will fail to achieve its desired results. Enabling effective human-model interaction, therefore, is crucial for realizing the value that models and model-centric engineering practice can provide. Advances in model technology and computational resources have been steadily made, however, the many facets of the human-model interaction experience remain relatively unexplored. Through empirical and qualitative methods, this thesis presents an exploration of human-model interaction in an effort to identify decision-making challenges, and appropriate mitigations, for individuals in model-centric environments. Learning from existing literature and past situations with similar considerations is a useful place to start in investigating the human aspects. Two analogy case studies reveal relevant individual and organizational challenges that may affect human-model interaction and decision-making within model-centric environments. An expert interview-based study yields empirical insight from thirty experts into sociotechnical factors that influence the trust and use of models by various types of actors within the model-centric decision-making process. Additionally, as automation, autonomy, and artificial intelligence (AI) will likely play key roles in successful model-centric engineering, relevant literature-based considerations are presented for how the capabilities of AI and autonomy may relate to a model-centric context. This cumulative research is ultimately distilled into twenty-nine descriptive and prescriptive heuristics for enabling effective human-model interaction and model-centric decision-making. These heuristics emerged from the voice of the experts interviewed, as well as from case studies and literature analyzed. Policy considerations based on this investigation are discussed, along with a suggested strategy of planned adaption for model-centric policymaking. Overall, this research aims to generate grounded theory to motivate and guide future research and development for enabling effective human-model interaction and model-centric decision-making.

Our society and academic research have largely neglected the fact that sound judgment and decision making are the crux of many professions. This volume explores metacognitive processes as an enabler of competence at decision making. Offering a new analysis of competence, by understanding and communicating what professional decision makers do, this book provides valuable contributions to the judgement/decision making field as well as the professional community at large.
