Book Synopsis Foreign Direct Investment in Post-Crisis Korea by : Judith Cherry
Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in Post-Crisis Korea written by Judith Cherry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-10-18 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Judith Cherry analyses the impact of economic and cultural globalization on efforts to promote inward foreign direct investment (IFDI) in South Korea over the past four decades. The book traces the development of Korean IFDI policy from one of restriction and control to one of encouragement and promotion. Specifically, it focuses on the challenges inherent in reforming the ‘software’ of IFDI promotion (socio-cultural issues, mindsets and perceptions) as opposed to changing its ‘hardware’ (systems, laws and regulations). Although the Korean government has made sustained efforts over the past decade to enhance Korea’s attractions as a host for inward investment, it has faced significant challenges in improving Korea’s IFDI performance. The discussion in this book of the wide range of transparent and non-transparent barriers that continue to hamper efforts to promote inward investment draws not only on the Korean debate concerning strategies for maximizing the benefits of IFDI, but also on the assessment of the Korean business and investment environment revealed in interviews conducted with European investors and officials in Seoul. Foreign Direct Investment in Post-Crisis Korea will appeal to students and scholars of international business, economics and globalization, as well as those with a more general interest in Korean society.

Book Synopsis Innovation, Investment and Intellectual Property in South Korea by : Ruth Taplin
Download or read book Innovation, Investment and Intellectual Property in South Korea written by Ruth Taplin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Korea known as the hermit kingdom was wrenched from its isolation in the mid-seventies with the forced industialisation of its economy by Park Chung-hee during his dictatorial regime. This led South Korea to becoming the most rapidly industialised country in the world with world class technology and a population who are largely digitally proficient. The course is charted from the rule of Park Chung-hee to his democratically elected daughter President Park Geun-hye who is now on trial for corruption. The legacy of the Park to Park era is not only the most fruitful in Korean history but the most tumultuous, most recently because of the accelerated nuclear ambitions of North Korea. The analysis is through the framework of investment, innovation and intellectual property rights and the double edged sword of cult and rapid action, so central to Korean culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-closed stock market of South Korea opened its doors to foreign investors in January 1992. Due to the success of the Korean economy during the past two decades, the country provides many new and exciting opportunities for foreign investors. This is the first book published in the United States that provides a comprehensive coverage of the Korean securities market. In addition to the structure and trading system of the Korean securities market, the other topics covered range from the Korean economy to a performance analysis of the stock market during the past ten years. The book starts with a discussion of the economic development of South Korea since 1962, which gives an overall picture of the history and current status of the Korean economy. A historical review of the Korean securities market is the next topic, followed by in-depth coverage of administration, laws and taxes, and the trading system of the Korean securities market. A financial analysis of the listed companies and descriptive comments on each industry are provided in chapters 9, 16, and 17. Some miscellaneous topics are covered in the later chapters. These topics include the over-the-counter market, securities financing, securities investment trust, and investment advisory business.

Book Synopsis Foreign Direct Investment in Korea by : Bernie Bishop
Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in Korea written by Bernie Bishop and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-24 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1997, this book traces the history of foreign investment policy in South Korea from 1961 until the present. It shows how Korea adopted a highly successful interventionist strategy towards foreign direct investment channeling it into areas of the economy where it could achieve the most benefit for the country’s economic development. In recent years Korea has tried to adopt a more market driven approach. However, differences within various institutions within the public and private sector led to policy confusion and ineffectiveness in meeting policy goals. The conclusion reached is that moving from an interventionist strategy to a market orientated strategy is difficult in this policy area. The book breaks new ground because it shows that while the conventional wisdom is that a 'market economy' approach is beneficial, moving from an interventionist policy to a market-orientated one is problematic and cannot be accomplished quickly.
