Book excerpt: We present a series of laser-driven particle acceleration experiments that are aimed at studying laser-particle acceleration as an inverse-radiation process. To this end we employ a semi-open vacuum setup with a thin planar boundary that interacts with the laser and the electromagnetic field of the electron beam. Particle acceleration from different types of boundaries will be studied and compared to the theoretical expectations from the Inverse-radiation picture and the field path integral method. We plan to measure the particle acceleration effect from transparent, reflective, black, and rough surface boundaries. While the agreement between the two acceleration pictures is straightforward to prove analytically for the transparent and reflective boundaries the equivalence is not clear-cut for the absorbing and rough-surface boundaries. Experimental observation may provide the evidence to distinguish between the models.

Book excerpt: This article calculates the energy gain of a single relativistic electron interacting with a single gaussian beam that is terminated by a metallic reflector at normal incidence by two different methods: the electric field integral along the path of the electron, and the overlap integral of the transition radiation pattern from the conductive foil with the laser beam. It is shown that for this instance the two calculation methods yield the same expression for the expected energy change of the electron.

Book excerpt: We have observed acceleration of relativistic electrons in vacuum driven by a linearly polarized visible laser beam incident on a thin gold-coated reflective boundary. The observed energy modulation effect follows all the characteristics expected for linear acceleration caused by a longitudinal electric field. As predicted by the Lawson-Woodward theorem the laser driven modulation only appears in the presence of the boundary. It shows a linear dependence with the strength of the electric field of the laser beam and also it is critically dependent on the laser polarization. Finally, it appears to follow the expected angular dependence of the inverse transition radiation process. experiment as the Laser Electron Accelerator Project (LEAP).

Book excerpt: The inverse Cerenkov acceleration (ICA) experiment is being performed on the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) located at Brookhaven National Laboratory. This facility presently features a 50 MeV e-beam and a (approximately)10 GW peak power CO2 laser. In the experiment 1.7 atm of H2 gas is used to slow the phase velocity of the light wave to match the electron velocity. The Cerenkov angle is 20 mrad and the interaction length is 20 cm. A peak energy gain of (approximately)12 MeV is predicted assuming 5-GW of laser peak power delivered to the interaction region. An update of the experiment's progress is presented.

Book excerpt: Inverse Cerenkov laser acceleration was demonstrated using an axicon optical system at the Brookhaven Accelerator Test Facility (ATF). The ATF S-band linac and a high power 10.6 [mu]m CO2 laser were used for the experiment. Experimental arrangement and the laser and the electron beams synchronization are discussed. The electrons were accelerated more than 0.7 MeV for a 34 MW CO2 laser power. More than 3.7 MeV acceleration was measured with 0.7 GW CO2 laser power, which is more than 20 times of the previous ICA experiment. The experimental results are compared with computer program TRANSPORT simulations.

Book excerpt: This book deals with diffraction radiation, which implies the boundary problems of electromagnetic radiation theory. Diffraction radiation is generated when a charged particle moves near a target edge at a distance ( – Lorentz factor, – wave length). Diffraction radiation of non-relativistic particles is widely used to design intense emitters in the cm wavelength range. Diffraction radiation from relativistic charged particles is important for noninvasive beam diagnostics and design of free electron lasers based on Smith-Purcell radiation which is diffraction radiation from periodic structures. Different analytical models of diffraction radiation and results of recent experimental studies are presented in this book. The book may also serve as guide to classical electrodynamics applications in beam physics and electrodynamics. It can be of great use for young researchers to develop skills and for experienced scientists to obtain new results.

Book excerpt: This unique book, written by one of the world's foremost specialists in the field, is devoted to the design of low and medium field electromagnets whose field level and quality (uniformity) are dominated by the pole shape and saturation characteristics of the iron yoke. The wide scope covers material ranging from the physical requirements for typical high performance accelerators, through the mathematical relationships which describe the shape of two-dimensional magnetic fields, to the mechanical fabrication, assembly, installation, and alignment of magnets in a typical accelerator lattice. In addition, stored energy concepts are used to develop magnetic force relationships and expressions for magnets with time varying fields. The material in the book is derived from lecture notes used in a course at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and subsequently expanded for the U.S. Particle Accelerator School, making this text an invaluable reference for students planning to enter the field of high energy physics.Mathematical relationships tying together magnet design and measurement theory are derived from first principles, and chapters are included that describe mechanical design, fabrication, installation, and alignment. Some fabrication and assembly practices are reviewed to ensure personnel and equipment safety and operational reliability of electromagnets and their power supply systems. This additional coverage makes the book an important resource for those already in the particle accelerator business as well as those requiring the design and fabrication of low and medium field level magnets for charged particle beam transport in ion implantation and medical applications.

Detector development is an important part of nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics, and through its applications in radiation imaging, it paves the way for advancements in the biomedical and materials sciences. Knowledge in detector physics is one of the required skills of an experimental physicist in these fields. The breadth of knowledge required for detector development comprises many areas of physics and technology, starting from interactions of particles with matter, gas- and solid-state physics, over charge transport and signal development, to elements of microelectronics. The book's aim is to describe the fundamentals of detectors and their different variants and implementations as clearly as possible and as deeply as needed for a thorough understanding. While this comprehensive opus contains all the materials taught in experimental particle physics lectures or modules addressing detector physics at the Master's level, it also goes well beyond these basic requirements. This is an essential text for students who want to deepen their knowledge in this field. It is also a highly useful guide for lecturers and scientists looking for a starting point for detector development work.

Book excerpt: This article explores the interaction between a monochromatic plane wave laser beam and a relativistic electron in the presence of a thin dielectric transparent boundary. It is found that the sign of the interaction between the laser and the electron in the downstream space is determined by the optical phase delay of the laser caused by the boundary, and that it can add to or cancel the interaction in the upstream space. Both the inverse-transition radiation picture and the electric field path integral method show this result.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past year further progress was made on preparations for the Spectra Technology, Inc. (STI) inverse Cerenkov acceleration (ICA) experiment to be performed on the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Major progress was made in the design and fabrication of the experimental apparatus. This includes the gas cell, where the ICA process occurs, and the optical system that converts the CO2 laser beam into a radially polarized beam. In terms of progress on theoretical work, the authors finished optimizing the ATF ICA design parameters using their Monte Carlo computer simulation. The optimized design predicts for the ATF conditions that over 50% energy gain should be observed. They published a paper on an improved method of performing ICA by operating near the resonance of a gas. They also began analysis of a method of accelerating particles in a vacuum using a radially polarized beam and axicon focusing. Although this new method can no longer be considered ICA, it has the potential of high acceleration gradients without the drawbacks of gas scattering and gas breakdown. Three papers were published and two conference papers were presented during 1990.

Book excerpt: This article explores the energy gain for a single relativistic electron from a monochromatic linearly polarized plane wave incident on a planar reflective boundary oriented at an arbitrary oblique angle, and compares the prediction for the energy gain from Inverse Transition Radiation method and the electric field path integral method. It is found that both methods predict the same energy gain regardless of the orientation of the boundary. A brief analysis on partially reflecting surfaces is presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle Accelerator Physics covers the dynamics of relativistic particle beams, basics of particle guidance and focusing, lattice design, characteristics of beam transport systems and circular accelerators. Particle-beam optics is treated in the linear approximation including sextupoles to correct for chromatic aberrations. Perturbations to linear beam dynamics are analyzed in detail and correction measures are discussed, while basic lattice design features and building blocks leading to the design of more complicated beam transport systems and circular accelerators are studied. Characteristics of synchrotron radiation and quantum effects due to the statistical emission of photons on particle trajectories are derived and applied to determine particle-beam parameters. The discussions specifically concentrate on relativistic particle beams and the physics of beam optics in beam transport systems and circular accelerators such as synchrotrons and storage rings. This book forms a broad basis for further, more detailed studies of nonlinear beam dynamics and associated accelerator physics problems, discussed in the subsequent volume.
