Book excerpt: The inverse dynamics problem was developed in order to provide researchers with the state of the art in inverse problems for dynamic and vibrational systems. Contrasted with a forward problem, which solves for the system output in a straightforward manner, an inverse problem searches for the system input through a procedure contaminated with errors and uncertainties. An inverse problem, with a focus on structural dynamics, determines the changes made to the system and estimates the inputs, including forces and moments, to the system, utilizing measurements of structural vibration responses only. With its complex mathematical structure and need for more reliable input estimations, the inverse problem is still a fundamental subject of research among mathematicians and engineering scientists. This book contains 11 articles that touch upon various aspects of inverse dynamic problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of different methods of formulating and solving inverse problems in physics from classical mechanics to the potentials and nucleus-nucleus scattering. Mathematical proofs are omitted since excellent monographs already exist dealing with these aspects of the inverse problems. The emphasis here is on finding numerical solutions to complicated equations. A detailed discussion is presented on the use of continued fractional expansion, its power and its limitation as applied to various physical problems. In particular, the inverse problem for discrete form of the wave equation is given a detailed exposition and applied to atomic and nuclear scattering, in the latter for elastic as well as inelastic collision. This technique is also used for inverse problem of geomagnetic induction and one-dimensional electrical conductivity. Among other topics covered are the inverse problem of torsional vibration, and also a chapter on the determination of the motion of a body with reflecting surface from its reflection coefficient.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverse dynamics problems arise in several mechanical systems. The aim is to calculate the inputs of a system in order that the outputs are identical to predefined or measured target signals. The motivation for inverse methods is related to practical applications in robotics, cranes or test rigs in the automotive and agricultural industry. The book considers four mathematical methods regarding to inverse problems in underactuated multibody systems. The first method under consideration is called virtual iteration. The algorithm is suitable for large multibody systems and finite element models, which are nearly linear. The second approach formulates the equations of motion as differential-algebraic equations and introduces so called control or servo constraints. The inverse problem can also be formulated as an optimal control problem. The basis is a cost functional, which includes the system outputs and the targets. The fourth method is a flatness-based trajectory tracking control. The considered methods are applied to academic and industrial examples.

In general, the inverse problem can be defined as one where one should estimate the cause from the result, while the direct problem is concerned with how to obtain the result from the cause. The aim of this symposium was to gather scientists and researchers in engineering mechanics concerned with inverse problems in order to exchange research result and develop computational and experimentalapproaches to solve inverse problems. The contributions in this volume cover the following subjects: mathematical and computational aspects of inverse problems, parameter or system identification, shape determination, sensitivity analysis, optimization, material property characterization, ultrasonic nondestructive testing, elastodynamic inverse problems, thermal inverse problems, and other miscellaneous engineering applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rigid Body Dynamics Algorithms presents the subject of computational rigid-body dynamics through the medium of spatial 6D vector notation. It explains how to model a rigid-body system and how to analyze it, and it presents the most comprehensive collection of the best rigid-body dynamics algorithms to be found in a single source. The use of spatial vector notation greatly reduces the volume of algebra which allows systems to be described using fewer equations and fewer quantities. It also allows problems to be solved in fewer steps, and solutions to be expressed more succinctly. In addition algorithms are explained simply and clearly, and are expressed in a compact form. The use of spatial vector notation facilitates the implementation of dynamics algorithms on a computer: shorter, simpler code that is easier to write, understand and debug, with no loss of efficiency.

Book excerpt: Written for structural and mechanical engineers involved in nondestructive testing and quality control projects as well as research engineers and applied mathematicians, this monograph provides all the required material for the mathematical and numerical modeling of crack identification testing procedures in statis and dynamics. It uses boundary element techniques for delicate computational mechanics modeling and considers both elastostatic and harmonic or transient dynamic problems. Inverse problems are formulated as output error minimization problems and are theoretically studied as a bilevel optimization problem. Beyond classical numerical optimization, soft computing tools (neural networks and genetic algorithms) and filter algorithms are used for the numerical solution. Stavroulakis teaches applied mathematics and civil engineering at the Technical University Carolo Wilhelmina. c. Book News Inc.
