Book excerpt: The book presents different models for the simultaneous optimization problem of capacity investment and work release rule parameterization. The overall costs are minimized either including backorder costs or considering a service level constraint. The available literature is extended with the integration of a distributed customer required lead time in addition to the actual demand distribution. Furthermore, an endogenous production lead time is introduced. Different models for make-to-order production systems with one or multiple serial processing stages are developed. Capacity investment is linked to the processing rates of the machines or to the number of the machines. Results are equations for service level, tardiness, and FGI lead time in such a production system. For special cases with M/M/1 and M/M/s queues explicit solutions of the optimization problems or optimality conditions concerning capacity investment and work release rule parameterization are provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of Inventory Management will be to explain the dynamics of inventory management's principles, concepts, and techniques as they relate to the entire supply chain (customer demand, distribution, and product transformation processes). The interrelationships of all functions will be defined. The book concentrates on understanding the many ramifications of inventory management. In today's competitive business environment, inventory management has proven to be most critical, and this book is directed to the management of inventory to assist in better understanding the body of knowledge required to operate in a competitive world. Almost all functions such as sales, engineering, and accounting have an impact and are impacted by inventory management. The book will assist in the training of students as well as APICS CPIM (Certified in Production and Inventory Management) candidates. As such it will not only be a textbook, but also a desk reference for those employees responsible for controlling inventories, and thereby assist in reducing cost, improving customer service, and maximizing capacity. Each chapter concludes with a case study and suggested solution. The case studies tell the story of a growing company, Smith Industries, and the related inventory management problems it had to address. The problems addressed relate to the subject matter of the chapter.

Book excerpt: This thesis includes the analysis of the existing theoretical knowledge in inventory planning from a lot sizing model approach and aims to identify the most suitable order generation method in the Make-To-Stock production of an electronic assembly company with production site located in Estonia. Inventory management is a key issue in the whole manufacturing process and in particular in the setting of the manufacturing lot sizes. Great emphasis should be placed on the optimization of the costs and on the search of the appropiate production orders. In production planning and control, models are needed to set the basis of a given service; at what times and in what lot size should be produced different products on one machine. The aim is not only to formulate a feasible production plan, but also to identify based on a cost evaluation, the best possible production plan. For this purpose, the cost manufacturing, warehousing and setup costs are taken into account. The optimal lot sizing model will be chosen according to the conditions of the concerned enterprise production system. Thus, regarding the current system, an optimal proposal will be made attempting to fit in the already established planning process. Moreover, in order to test the suitability of the chosen lot sizing model, some cost calculations will take place. When it comes to achieve better results and stand out at the top of the competitive field there is a need of a continuous improvement attitude. Only by broadening the approach, will a company be capable of keeping the pace with an incessant world.

Understand the text and it will show the way to guaranteed improved inventory control, reduced stock levels, and higher availability."—from the Preface "The development of inventory management is a dynamic activity, with new approaches being made, techniques being refined, and new challenges being met. . . . It is imperative that [these] challenges are met, since continuing competitiveness is based on ever-improving customer service and ever-reducing inventory costs."—from the text As a vital function of an organization's operational structure, effective inventory management is key to improving a company's customer service, cash flow, and ultimately, its profitability margin. While it may sound simple, it is, in fact, far more complex than most managers perceive, requiring very specific knowledge and understanding. It is based upon a framework of unique tools and techniques essential to achieving complete success. Best Practice in Inventory Management gives you these essentials, with in-depth coverage of the latest practices in the field. The book delivers a wealth of solid solutions for lowering inventory overhead, bettering customer relations, and increasing productivity and performance. The techniques are placed within the context of stores operations, which can be applied in a variety of situations, from manufacturing and distribution to warehousing, consumable stores, and spares and service. Best Practice in Inventory Management follows a logical progression, beginning with targets and moving forward through inventory structuring, individual item control, and coordination. In the process, it probes cutting-edge strategies, including Pareto analysis, Just in Time (JIT), and Material Requirements Planning (MRP), and offers a rational approach to the risks of stockouts. Aided by a host of new applications, practical methods, and real-world examples, you'll learn to implement a variety of processes vital to inventory structure and control. From effective stock monitoring to forecasting, setting, and assessing stock level guidelines, this book outlines the crucial steps in having suitable product available at an acceptable price and within a reasonable timescale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up to now, demand fulfillment in make-to-stock manufacturing is usually handled by advanced planning systems. Orders are fulfilled on the basis of simple rules or deterministic planning approaches not taking into account demand fluctuations. The consideration of different customer classes as it is often done today requires more sophisticated approaches explicitly considering stochastic influences. This book reviews current literature, presents a framework that addresses revenue management and demand fulfillment at once and introduces new stochastic approaches for demand fulfillment in make-to-stock manufacturing based on the ideas of the revenue management literature.
