Download or read book Invasion Ecology written by Julie L. Lockwood and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-05 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Invasion Ecology provides a comprehensive and updated introduction to all aspects of biological invasion by non-native species. Highlighting important research findings associated with each stage of invasion, the book provides an overview of the invasion process from transportation patterns and causes of establishment success to ecological impacts, invader management, and post-invasion evolution. The authors have produced new chapters on predicting and preventing invasion, managing and eradicating invasive species, and invasion dynamics in a changing climate. Modern global trade and travel have led to unprecedented movement of non-native species by humans with unforeseen, interesting, and occasionally devastating consequences. Increasing recognition of the problems associated with invasion has led to a rapid growth in research into the dynamics of non-native species and their adverse effects on native biota and human economies. This book provides a synthesis of this fast growing field of research and is an essential text for undergraduate and graduate students in ecology and conservation management. Book Synopsis Plant Invasions and Global Climate Change by : Sachchidanand Tripathi
Download or read book Plant Invasions and Global Climate Change written by Sachchidanand Tripathi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-25 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book provides an ensemble of contemporary research related to the challenges, impacts and precautionary measures for tackling plant invasions in the context of changing climate in different regions of the world. In current scenario, plant invasions are expansive and significant component of anthropogenic global climate change. Temperature variations may compromise the adaptability of native species, thereby stressing them and decreasing the resistance potential of natural communities to invasion. Invasive alien species under the current scenario have been suggested as a major threat to biodiversity. It is also predicted that increasing disturbances or extreme events such as fires, floods, cyclones, storms, heat-waves, droughts, etc. will be direct consequences of changing climate supporting the invasive alien species. A comprehensive understanding of the interaction between species invasion and climate change will be supplemental in forecasting future shifts in biodiversity. Further, different predictive models indicate a plausible increase in the abundance and impact of invasive alien species which may have direct implications for future research and target-oriented policy and decision making. However, these predictions become more complicated considering the complexity of interactions between the impacts of changing climate with other components of global change (changes in land use, nitrogen deposition, etc.) which are affecting the distribution of native plant species, ecosystem dynamics as well as non-native/invasive species. This book will be suitable for students (undergraduate and postgraduates) of agriculture, forestry, ecology, soil science, and environmental sciences; teachers, researchers, and climate change scientists in academic and research institutions. It will also be applicable to environmental management agencies, government agencies and policy makers.

Book Synopsis Invasive Species: A Very Short Introduction by : Julie Lockwood
Download or read book Invasive Species: A Very Short Introduction written by Julie Lockwood and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today there is no place on Earth that does not harbour invasive exotic species. Invasive plants and animals can be found on every continent, including Antarctica, and within all waterbodies, including all oceans. In our increasingly connected world, with speedy commercial and recreational travel and the global movement of biological matter for food, invasive species are showing up at such a fast rate that there is no way to accurately count how many currently exist or how many are likely to emerge in the coming decades. Monitoring these species and controlling their spread is essential, as we increasingly understand the negative impacts they pose: their threat to our health; the toll they take on our commercial production; and the threat they pose to native ecosystems. This Very Short Introduction provides a clear definition of an invasive species, and considers the myriad ways they are moved around the globe, and the ecological, social, and economic impacts they often impose. Exploring the way Earth's biodiversity is being affected by global change, Julie Lockwood also discusses policy and management approaches to combating the ill-effects of invasive species, and how invasive species fit within the broader context of environmental change. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
Book Synopsis Invasive Species in a Globalized World by : Reuben P. Keller
Download or read book Invasive Species in a Globalized World written by Reuben P. Keller and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global trade and the spread of human populations have increasingly moved thousands of native animal and plant species across the natural barriers that have kept them ecologically separated for millions of years. Because some of them thrive in their new regions and harm the environment, the economy, and human health, the prevention and management of such invasive species has become a major local, national, and international policy initiative. Yet even though ecologists have been studying the negative (and sometimes positive) environmental impacts of invasive species and trying to curb their proliferation, and even though their work has in some cases stimulated public conversation and policy, politicians have generally ignored their recommendations. As a result, ecologists have achieved limited success in slowing the spread of invasives. They ve been realizing that in order to fully characterize the impacts of these species, they need to engage with other relevant disciplines across the social and legal sciences as well as the humanities. Drawing together a wide variety of ecologists, historians, economists, legal scholars, policymakers, and communication scholars, Invasive Species in a Globalized World aims to facilitate a dialogue among these various disciplines in order to fully understand invasives and stop their spread. Addressing the numerous challenges associated with reducing invasive impacts, the contributors provide direct policy recommendations, strategies for communicating the risks of invasive species, and insight into how public discourse drives our response to these risks."
Book Synopsis Invasive Species Management by : Mick N. Clout
Download or read book Invasive Species Management written by Mick N. Clout and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasive alien species are a major and growing threat to biodiversity worldwide. The transport of organisms through increased levels of trade and tourism is leading to the widespread breaching of natural biogeographic barriers at unprecedented rates. Consequences can be severe, especially in naturally isolated ecosystems. Invasive alien species can cause the extinction of vulnerable endemic species, alter the structure and composition of communities, disrupt successional pathways, and lead to the loss of ecosystem services. Global climate change may further exacerbate the spread of alien species, as climatic zones shift and potential ranges alter. The effective management of invasive alien species is clearly a priority for biological conservation worldwide. This book first provides strategies for managing such species at successive invasion stages, from prevention at the border to control of major infestations. It then describes the general tools and approaches that are recommended for successful management of particular groups of invasive organisms in a range of environments. In each case, the ecological basis and practical requirements of invasive alien species management are addressed. This integration of proven techniques and policies will be useful to a wide readership of students, academics, conservation practitioners, invasive species managers, legislators, and to the broader community concerned with biological conservation.

Book Synopsis Parasites and Biological Invasions by : Jamie Bojko
Download or read book Parasites and Biological Invasions written by Jamie Bojko and published by CABI. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological invasions - the introduction, establishment and spread of invasive alien species - are complex global phenomena that can cause significant environmental, ecological, and economic harm. Along with the direct effects of an invasive host organism, there is the additional threat of co-introduced pathogenic and parasitic species. Co-introduced parasites can affect the success of the invasive organism but can also go on to infect hosts in the new range, resulting in novel ecological interactions and complex impacts. These 'Invasive Parasites' can have profound impacts on the success of a biological invasion, and can pose a significant risk to wildlife, in addition to organisms cultured for agriculture and aquaculture. Authored by leading researchers in the discipline, this new book is a useful tool for helping invasion researchers incorporate disease data into their invasion models, as well a vital resource for researchers, policy makers, and environmental managers that are more generally interested in the myriad consequences of species invasions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Invasive alien species (IAS), introduced intentionally or inadvertently, are one of the main drivers of global environmental change and cause significant ecological and economic damage. IAS threaten biosecurity, human and animal health, ecosystem services and important social aspects of cultures and communities on every continent. Underserved and marginalized peoples are at great risk from alien species invasions. The issue is a global crisis of enormous proportion and has grown insidiously for decades, exacerbated by the globalization of world economies and increased trade and travel. Globally, the concern for IAS varies greatly from nation to nation, and often lacks the level of conscious proactivity necessary to effectively address the threats before they are insurmountable. This is largely due to capacity limitations for most nations and is aggravated by shortage of funds to implement strategies, lack of policies, and variable levels of public awareness and perspectives on risk. Most importantly, IAS is yet to emerge as a priority issue to tackle for most countries although there are some changes visible now. The spread of a novel coronavirus (COVID-19), has rocketed the global biosecurity issue to a new level of consciousness, and perhaps galvanizing the world about the importance of disease pandemics and demonstrating that the IAS threat has so many parallel aspects of risk and spread. Through this publication, we attempt to compile information for a better understanding of the global threat of IAS, the diverse array of issues resultant of invasion, and considerations by decision makers for management. It shares information from every continent on the planet. We also attempt to provide a variety of perspectives, problems, solutions, and considerations relevant to invasions, and help illustrate how a large portion of world nations, cultures, communities, and organizations are struggling with the same issues as their neighbors do against the IAS threat. It thus becomes necessary to highlight the IAS threat in terms of a global 'call to action' at multiple scales and challenge the world to unify and collaborate at all levels"--
