Defs.--The "logarithm" of any proposed number is the "exponent of the power" to which some fixed number must be raised in order to equal the proposed number. A system of logarithms is, therefore, a "system" of "powers" of some fixed number. The "fixed number" is the "base" of the system. The system of logarithms which is used in this book is Brigg's "System," or the "common" system of logarithms, and has 10 for its base. Thus: 102=100, 2 is the logarithm of 100 to the base 10. Or, 2=log.100, "to the base 10" being understood. 2. "The logarithm of 1 is 0." For--1=10/10=101-1=100. 3. The logarithm of 10, or the logarithm of the base is 1. For--101=10. Applying fractional exponents to the first member of this equation, and extracting the square root of the second member, we have... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Windham Press is committed to bringing the lost cultural heritage of ages past into the 21st century through high-quality reproductions of original, classic printed works at affordable prices. This book has been carefully crafted to utilize the original images of antique books rather than error-prone OCR text. This also preserves the work of the original typesetters of these classics, unknown craftsmen who laid out the text, often by hand, of each and every page you will read. Their subtle art involving judgment and interaction with the text is in many ways superior and more human than the mechanical methods utilized today, and gave each book a unique, hand-crafted feel in its text that connected the reader organically to the art of bindery and book-making. We think these benefits are worth the occasional imperfection resulting from the age of these books at the time of scanning, and their vintage feel provides a connection to the past that goes beyond the mere words of the text.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Logarithmic and Other Mathematical Tables In compiling this set of mathematical tables, I have selected those arrange ments which experienced computers find most convenient. A number of desirable features are here introduced which have not appeared in any single collection of tables. In preparing these tables, a number of my friends have assisted me with their suggestions. Special acknowledgements are due to Professor W. W. Campbell, Astronomer at Lick Observatory, whose high attainments are so well known, and to Mr. J. 0. Reed, formerly the efficient Principal of the East Saginaw High School. The proofs have been read with great care, and it is believed that the tables will be found very free from error. In reading the proofs, I have received much careful assistance from Mr. Taka Kawada. Mr. J. W. Glover has also assisted me by reading a portion of the plate proofs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Rough results will answer for approximativ purposes but where it is desir able, for instance, to construct a table Of amortization, sinking fund or valuation of a lease at an unusual rate, for a large amount and for a great many years, exactness is desirable and becomes self-proving at the end. N o startling innovations will be found, but a number of topics, as for instance, the subject of Graphs, have been treated in a novel way. The various portraits of eminent mathematicians, with biographical and historical notes, have been introduced to add a touch of human interest and, perhaps, lead students to a further investigation into the history of mathematics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rudimentary Treatise on Logarithms The numbers composing a series in continued proportion, similar to the above, will, on examination, be found to be de rived from each other by the continual multiplication of the previous term by some constant number; thus, in the first series, 6 is derived from 2 by being multiplied by 3, and in like manner 18 is obtained from 6, and 54 from 18; so in the second series, the constant multiplier is 2, each term being derived from the preceding by multiplication by that num ber. A series of numbers thus obtained by the continual multiplication of its terms by a constant number is called a geometrical series; such is the series (a) above; while a series in which the terms are derived by the continual addition of a constant number is termed an arithmetical series, an example of which is afforded by the series (b) above. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Construction of the Wonderful Canon of Logarithms: Translated From Latin Into English With Notes and a Catalogue of the Various Editions of Napier's Works by William Rae Macdonald To the critical events of I 588 which, as we have already seen, drew Napier into public life, is due the appearance in already mentioned. The treatise was intended to have been written in Latin, but, owing to the events above referred to, he was, as he says, 'constrained of compassion, leaving the Latin to haste out in English the present work almost unripe.' It was published in 1593. A revised edition appeared in 161 1, wherein he still expressed his intention of rewriting it in Latin, but this was never accomplished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical, Short, and Direct Method of Calculating the Logarithm of Any Given Number, and the Number Corresponding to Any Given Logarithm Logarithms is as powerful an agent in calculation as steam is in mechanics; with this truth before us, it is strange that few know their proper use, or how they are computed. The most profound mathematician, or the most experienced calculator, has been hitherto unable, simply and directly, to compute in any reasonable time, the logarithm of a number taken at pleasure, or the number correspond ing to a given logarithm to any required extent; for instance, if the logarithm of 36525636516 be required to fifteen places of decimals. Download or read book Manual of Logarithms written by G. F. Matthews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Logarithms: Treated in Connection With Arithmetic, Algebra, Plane Trigonometry, and Mensuration, for the Use of Students Preparing for Army and Other Examinations This Manual is intended to supply a want that has daily become more apparent during many years' experience of preparing pupils for examina tion. In the elementary text-books on Algebra and Trigonometry the subject is treated too shortly for practical purposes, and there is a great scarcity of examples. These failings I have endeavoured to remedy; and, to give the student accuracy and facility in his work, a very large num ber Of examples, over 1300 in all, have been introduced, among which will be found the more important Of those that have been set during the last ten years in the examinations for entrance to Sandhurst, Wool wich, and the Staff College. A few typical examples are worked out at full length in the course of the bookwork to assist the student and spare the tutor. The subject has been treated in connection with Arithmetic, Algebra, Plane Trigonometry, and Mensuration. Notwithstanding the care with which the examples have been worked out, there must neces sarily be. Many errors in a work Of this nature. I shall therefore esteem it a great favour if notification Of these be made either to the publishers or myself.
