Sz.-Nagy no ticed in 1952 that [49]: "The existence of such a variety of linear transformations, having the same spectrum concentrated at a single point, brings out the difficulties of characterization of linear transformations of general type by means of their spectra." Subsequently, spectral analysis has been developed for different classes of non selfadjoint operators [6,7,14,20,21,36,44,46,54]. It was then realized that this analysis forms a natural basis for the theory of systems interacting with the environment. The success of this theory in the single operator case inspired attempts to create a general theory in the much more complicated case of several commuting operators with finite-dimensional imaginary parts. During the past 10-15 years such a theory has been developed, yielding fruitful connections with algebraic geometry and sys tem theory. Our purpose in this book is to formulate the basic problems appearing in this theory and to present its main results. It is worth noting that, in addition to the joint spectrum, the corresponding algebraic variety and its global topological characteristics play an important role in the classification of commuting operators. For the case of a pair of operators these are: 1. The corresponding algebraic curve, and especially its genus. 2. Certain classes of divisors - or certain line bundles - on this curve.

Book excerpt: This classic text, written by two notable mathematicians, constitutes a comprehensive survey of the general theory of linear operations, together with applications to the diverse fields of more classical analysis. Dunford and Schwartz emphasize the significance of the relationships between the abstract theory and its applications. This text has been written for the student as well as for the mathematician—treatment is relatively self-contained. This is a paperback edition of the original work, unabridged, in three volumes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a systematic treatment of the theory of unbounded linear operators in normed linear spaces with applications to differential equations. Largely self-contained, it is suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students, and it only requires a familiarity with metric spaces and real variable theory. After introducing the elementary theory of normed linear spaces--particularly Hilbert space, which is used throughout the book--the author develops the basic theory of unbounded linear operators with normed linear spaces assumed complete, employing operators assumed closed only when needed. Other topics include strictly singular operators; operators with closed range; perturbation theory, including some of the main theorems that are later applied to ordinary differential operators; and the Dirichlet operator, in which the author outlines the interplay between functional analysis and "hard" classical analysis in the study of elliptic partial differential equations. In addition to its readable style, this book's appeal includes numerous examples and motivations for certain definitions and proofs. Moreover, it employs simple notation, eliminating the need to refer to a list of symbols.

The authors' goal is to present the basic facts of functional analysis in a form suitable for engineers, scientists, and applied mathematicians. Although the Definition-Theorem-Proof format of mathematics is used, careful attention is given to motivation of the material covered and many illustrative examples are presented. First published in 1971, Linear Operator in Engineering and Sciences has since proved to be a popular and very useful textbook.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive graduate textbook that introduces functional analysis with an emphasis on the theory of linear operators and its application to differential equations, integral equations, infinite systems of linear equations, approximation theory, and numerical analysis. As a textbook designed for senior undergraduate and graduate students, it begins with the geometry of Hilbert spaces and proceeds to the theory of linear operators on these spaces including Banach spaces. Presented as a natural continuation of linear algebra, the book provides a firm foundation in operator theory which is an essential part of mathematical training for students of mathematics, engineering, and other technical sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the modern theory of polynomials whose coefficients are linear bounded operators in a Banach space - operator polynomials. This theory has its roots and applications in partial differential equations, mechanics and linear systems, as well as in modern operator theory and linear algebra. Over the last decade, new advances have been made in the theory of operator polynomials based on the spectral approach. The author, along with other mathematicians, participated in this development, and many of the recent results are reflected in this monograph. It is a pleasure to acknowledge help given to me by many mathematicians. First I would like to thank my teacher and colleague, I. Gohberg, whose guidance has been invaluable. Throughout many years, I have worked wtih several mathematicians on the subject of operator polynomials, and, consequently, their ideas have influenced my view of the subject; these are I. Gohberg, M. A. Kaashoek, L. Lerer, C. V. M. van der Mee, P. Lancaster, K. Clancey, M. Tismenetsky, D. A. Herrero, and A. C. M. Ran. The following mathematicians gave me advice concerning various aspects of the book: I. Gohberg, M. A. Kaashoek, A. C. M. Ran, K. Clancey, J. Rovnyak, H. Langer, P.
