Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the well-established mathematical technique known as Fourier analysis (or alternatively as harmonic or spectral analysis). It is a handbook comprising a collection of the most important theorems in Fourier analysis, presented without proof in a form that is accurate but also accessible to a reader who is not a specialist mathematician. The technique of Fourier analysis has long been of fundamental importance in the physical sciences, engineering and applied mathematics, and is today of particular importance in communications theory and signal analysis. Existing books on the subject are either rigorous treatments, intended for mathematicians, or are intended for non-mathematicians, and avoid the finer points of the theory. This book bridges the gap between the two types. The text is self-contained in that it includes examples of the use of the various theorems, and any mathematical concepts not usually included in degree courses in physical sciences and engineering are explained. This handbook will be of value to postgraduates and research workers in the physical sciences and in engineering subjects, particularly communications and electronic engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten amazing curves personally selected by one of today's most important math writers Curves for the Mathematically Curious is a thoughtfully curated collection of ten mathematical curves, selected by Julian Havil for their significance, mathematical interest, and beauty. Each chapter gives an account of the history and definition of one curve, providing a glimpse into the elegant and often surprising mathematics involved in its creation and evolution. In telling the ten stories, Havil introduces many mathematicians and other innovators, some whose fame has withstood the passing of years and others who have slipped into comparative obscurity. You will meet Pierre Bézier, who is known for his ubiquitous and eponymous curves, and Adolphe Quetelet, who trumpeted the ubiquity of the normal curve but whose name now hides behind the modern body mass index. These and other ingenious thinkers engaged with the challenges, incongruities, and insights to be found in these remarkable curves—and now you can share in this adventure. Curves for the Mathematically Curious is a rigorous and enriching mathematical experience for anyone interested in curves, and the book is designed so that readers who choose can follow the details with pencil and paper. Every curve has a story worth telling.

Book excerpt: International Tables for Crystallography are no longer available for purchase from Springer. For further information please contact Wiley Inc. (follow the link on the right hand side of this page). Volume B presents accounts of the numerous aspects of reciprocal space in crystallographic research. After an introductory chapter, Part 1 presents the reader with an account of structure-factor formalisms, an extensive treatment of the theory, algorithms and crystallographic applications of Fourier methods, and fundamental as well as advanced treatments of symmetry in reciprocal space. In Part 2, these general accounts are followed by detailed expositions of crystallographic statistics, the theory of direct methods, Patterson techniques, isomorphous replacement and anomalous scattering, and treatments of the role of electron microscopy and diffraction in crystal structure determination, including applications of direct methods to electron crystallography. Part 3 deals with applications of reciprocal space to molecular geometry and `best'-plane calculations, and contains a treatment of the principles of molecular graphics and modelling and their applications. A convergence-acceleration method of importance in the computation of approximate lattice sums is presented and the part concludes with a discussion of the Ewald method. Part 4 contains treatments of various diffuse-scattering phenomena arising from crystal dynamics, disorder and low dimensionality (liquid crystals), and an exposition of the underlying theories and/or experimental evidence. Polymer crystallography and reciprocal-space images of aperiodic crystals are also treated. Part 5 of the volume contains introductory treatments of the theory of the interaction of radiation with matter (dynamical theory) as applied to X-ray, electron and neutron diffraction techniques. The simplified trigonometric expressions for the structure factors in the 230 three-dimensional space groups, which appeared in Volume I of International Tables for X-ray Crystallography, are now given in Appendix 1.4.3 to Chapter 1.4 of this volume. Volume B is a vital addition to the library of scientists engaged in crystal structure determination, crystallographic computing, crystal physics and other fields of crystallographic research. Graduate students specializing in crystallography will find much material suitable for self-study and a rich source of references to the relevant literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the functional analytic properties of Weyl transforms as bounded linear operators on $ L2ü(äBbb Rünü) $ in terms of the symbols of the transforms. Further, the boundedness, the compactness, the spectrum and the functional calculus of the Weyl transform are proved in detail, while new results and techniques on the boundedness and compactness of the Weyl transforms in terms of the symbols in $ Lrü(äBbb Rü2nü) $ and in terms of the Wigner transforms of Hermite functions are given. The roles of the Heisenberg group and the symplectic group in the study of the structure of the Weyl transform are explained, and the connections of the Weyl transform with quantization are highlighted throughout the book. Localisation operators, first studied as filters in signal analysis, are shown to be Weyl transforms with symbols expressed in terms of the admissible wavelets of the localisation operators. The results and methods mean this book is of interest to graduates and mathematicians working in Fourier analysis, operator theory, pseudo-differential operators and mathematical physics.

This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique text is an introduction to harmonic analysis on the simplest symmetric spaces, namely Euclidean space, the sphere, and the Poincaré upper half plane. This book is intended for beginning graduate students in mathematics or researchers in physics or engineering. Written with an informal style, the book places an emphasis on motivation, concrete examples, history, and, above all, applications in mathematics, statistics, physics, and engineering. Many corrections and updates have been incorporated in this new edition. Updates include discussions of P. Sarnak and others' work on quantum chaos, the work of T. Sunada, Marie-France Vignéras, Carolyn Gordon, and others on Mark Kac's question "Can you hear the shape of a drum?", A. Lubotzky, R. Phillips and P. Sarnak's examples of Ramanujan graphs, and, finally, the author's comparisons of continuous theory with the finite analogues. Topics featured throughout the text include inversion formulas for Fourier transforms, central limit theorems, Poisson's summation formula and applications in crystallography and number theory, applications of spherical harmonic analysis to the hydrogen atom, the Radon transform, non-Euclidean geometry on the Poincaré upper half plane H or unit disc and applications to microwave engineering, fundamental domains in H for discrete groups Γ, tessellations of H from such discrete group actions, automorphic forms, and the Selberg trace formula and its applications in spectral theory as well as number theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of complex functions is a strikingly beautiful and powerful area of mathematics. Some particularly fascinating examples are seemingly complicated integrals which are effortlessly computed after reshaping them into integrals along contours, as well as apparently difficult differential and integral equations, which can be elegantly solved using similar methods. To use them is sometimes routine but in many cases it borders on an art. The goal of the book is to introduce the reader to this beautiful area of mathematics and to teach him or her how to use these methods to solve a variety of problems ranging from computation of integrals to solving difficult integral equations. This is done with a help of numerous examples and problems with detailed solutions.
