It does not pretend to be a systematic history of the Roman law, nor is it intended in any way to take the place of a commentary on the Institutes of Justinian. It is rather a series of chapters on problems, mainly historical, which confront the student who is beginning the Roman law. The historical notices contained in the Institutes of Justinian are so fragmentary that without more information the student does not see the law in its true perspective.
