Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change. Habitat loss. Soil erosion. Groundwater depletion. Toxins in our food. Inhumane treatment of farm animals. Increasing farm worker exploitation. Hunger and malnutrition in the midst of plenty. What will it take for farmers in the United States to embrace sustainable practices? Michael Mayerfeld Bell’s Farming for Us All first tackled this question twenty years ago, providing crucial insight into how the structure of US agriculture created this situation and exploring, by contrast, the practices of farmers who are working together to radically change how they think, learn, and grow. This updated edition of his now-classic work reflects on the lessons learned over the past two decades. Constrained by an oppressive nexus of markets, regulations, subsidies, and technology, farmers find themselves undermining their own economic and social security as well as the security of the land. Bell turns to Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI), that state’s largest sustainable-agriculture group. He traces how PFI creates an agriculture that engages others—farmers, researchers, officials, and consumers—in a common conversation about what agriculture could look like. Through dialogue, PFI members crossbreed knowledge, discovering pragmatic solutions to help crops grow in ways that sustain families, communities, societies, economies, and environments. Farming for Us All makes the case that for sustainable farming to flourish, new social relations are as important to cultivate as new crops. This book is necessary—and hopeful—reading for anyone concerned about the present and future of food and farming.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture, Theoretical and Practical: A Textbook of Mixed Farming for Large and Small Farmers and for Agricultural Students I comply very willingly with the request of Professor Wrightson and Mr. Newsham, that I should write a few lines of introduction to their textbook on Agriculture, Theoretical and Practical. It may be said, and with some force, that there is no lack of manuals and other excellent works on the subject already in existence, but, while it is easy to obtain exhaustive information on some one phase of farming practice, and on the sciences affecting it, there are few, if any, up-to-date textbooks holding precisely the position this book is intended to fill. A technical manual on the theory or practice of agriculture, designed with a definite aim, may fill two very useful and necessary functions; namely, those connected with the instruction of pupils at Agriculture Colleges, Farm Schools, or similar institutions, and those attached to a book of reference which the farmer or small-holder may consult, when, from time to time, he is in need of advice based on practical experience and scientific knowledge. The school purpose and the farm purpose, though allied, are quite distinct, and it is the aim of the authors to provide a book that will serve both. There is another reason for hoping that such a book will find a place both in the classroom, and the houses of small as well as the large farmers. We are just at the beginning of a great movement in agricultural matters. Small-holdings may be expected to increase in number in suitable districts, and Farm Institutes, under the encouragement of the Board of Agriculture and financial support from the Development Fund, will no doubt spread over the country. Book excerpt: "Farming While Black is the first comprehensive "how to" guide for aspiring African-heritage growers to reclaim their dignity as agriculturists and for all farmers to understand the distinct, technical contributions of African-heritage people to sustainable agriculture. At Soul Fire Farm, author Leah Penniman co-created the Black and Latino Farmers Immersion (BLFI) program as a container for new farmers to share growing skills in a culturally relevant and supportive environment led by people of color. Farming While Black organizes and expands upon the curriculum of the BLFI to provide readers with a concise guide to all aspects of small-scale farming, from business planning to preserving the harvest. Throughout the chapters Penniman uplifts the wisdom of the African diasporic farmers and activists whose work informs the techniques described--from whole farm planning, soil fertility, seed selection, and agroecology, to using whole foods in culturally appropriate recipes, sharing stories of ancestors, and tools for healing from the trauma associated with slavery and economic exploitation on the land. Woven throughout the book is the story of Soul Fire Farm, a national leader in the food justice movement." --

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effective Farming: A Text-Book for American Schools To meet the new demands, many texts are appearing. The present book is one of the contributions to this rapidly enlarging field, drawn from several years' experience as a teacher of agriculture in both high school and college. It aims to present instruction in practical agriculture in such a way as to be read ily understood by both pupil and general reader, and to be directly adaptable, at the same time, to the needs of the class room and laboratory. Agriculture is a subject of great variety. One person cannot cover it all. As indicated in certain parts of the text, some of the matter has been compiled from publications of the United States Department of Agriculture and the state experiment stations. This form of compilation suggests the kind of valuable information that can be gleaned from these publications. Too few teachers realize the great extent of practical teaching, material in these bulletins and circulars. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginnings in Agriculture This book is designed for the purpose of introducing the study of agriculture into the seventh and eighth grades of our elementary schools. It may also meet a need in some of the smaller high-schools and in ungraded special and private schools. When the pupil comes to well-developed high-school work, he will need a more detailed and specific text. The book is founded on the suggestions in the Report of the Committee on Industrial Education in Schools for Rural Communities, of the National Educational Association. That Committee recommended for the school years 6 to 8, four sets of subjects as follows: first half year, the affairs of agriculture; second half year, the soil; second year, farming schemes and crops; third year, animals. A condensation of this plan into a two-year scheme has been attempted in the present volume. It has been the aim of the author to cover the work very largely in a nature-study spirit, by which it is meant that the pupil shall be brought into as close touch as possible with the actual farms, soils, crops, animals, and affairs. The problems are intended to set the pupils at work on their own account rather than to enable them to answer questions that may be suggested in the text. It is, of course, essential to practical school conditions that there shall be reading-matter and recitation-matter in the book. Perhaps Part I, dealing with the general agricultural situation, may be used as a series of introductory reading and discussion exercises, the actual work with subject-matter to begin with Part II. The open-book method of teaching, now used successfully in many schools for history and geography, might be employed advantageously with this text, especially in schools in which nature-study receives little attention. It is assumed that the teacher will see that the pupils work out the problems, Or as many of them as have useful application to the affairs of the particular community. It is to be hoped that there will be a school-garden on the premises, or that small areas may be set aside at the homes of the pupils, on which many of the sug gestions in the book may be worked out personally. It is specially to be desired that the parents be brought into the work, in order that the agricultural affairs of the community may be related to the school. Therefore, a large number of problems have been pre sented with this end in view, the expectation being that the pupil will ask the parents for the proper solution of the questions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Principles of Agriculture: A Text Book for the Common Schools The little volume herewith submitted for the use of the school children of the Southwest is the outcome of many years' study of the problems of rural school agriculture. Agriculture, as a school subject, is new, and no guiding standards have yet been generally recognized which limit the method or scope of such a text. A careful review of the many texts that have been published during the last ten years shows a wide range of opinion as to the function of such texts. Some are mere handbooks, dealing with the practical work of agriculture; others are only a series of short chapters on botany, chemistry, physics, zoology, meteorology, etc., without references to applications. Our own ideas are that the primary object of a text on agriculture, intended for the common schools, is to satisfy the natural interest of all children about the whys of common farm conditions. This is the first step in developing an intelligent theory which will guide practice. While the idea of teaching agriculture is very old, it is only i recent years that it has come to be a large factor in the system of general education. A word of introduction, therefore, may not be out of place. A number of agricultural colleges and special schools for agricultural instruction were established between 1840 and 1860. Some were privately endowed, others supported out of public revenues. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
