Book excerpt: For my past sins, Leslie Ettre has given me the privilege of writing a few words to preface his excellent little book. It gives me great pleasure to do so, because of the many years of fruitful collabo ration we have had at Perkin-Elmer, because it is refreshing to see a treatise in gas chromatography in which the theoretical treatment has been bared to its essentials, without a mushrooming of formulae which, by means of an ever increasing number of parameters, account for more and more, and explain less and less, and because the author has recognized that the gas chromatographic column is a nearly passive element in its own right which deserves to have a treatise written nearly exclusively about it, just as electrical circuit theory can be discussed without elaborate references to vacuum tubes and meters. I wish this conscientiously written volume the success it deserves. M. J. E. GOLAY VII Preface Gas chromatography is a separation technique used primarily in analytical chemistry. Therefore, it is evident that special emphasis should be placed on that particular part of the apparatus in which the separation takes place. This part is the column, the heart of the gas chromatograph. The goal of researchers in the field of gas chromatography has been-from the beginning-to understand the separation process so that they might design columns with the best possible performance. Such investigation led M. J. E.

Book Synopsis Analytical Gas Chromatography by : Walter Jennings
Download or read book Analytical Gas Chromatography written by Walter Jennings and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical Gas Chromatography is a free-standing introduction to and guide through the rapidly progressing field of analytical gas chromatography. The book is divided into 10 chapters that cover various aspects of analytical gas chromatography, from most advantageous column type to troubleshooting. The opening chapters of the book discuss the advantages of the open tubular column over the packed column. This topic is followed by significant chapters on various variables in the gas chromatographic process, including sample injection, stationary phase, carrier gas, and installation. The effect of changes in these variables on the solution elution order is also considered. A chapter also examines the influence of instrumental design features, such as excessive or unswept volumes in the flow path; suitability of the detection mode; and speed and fidelity of the data-handling equipment. The book also presents selected methods that have been employed to achieve better results for a given gas chromatographic problem. The application areas of gas chromatographic process, including food, flavor, fragrance, petroleum- and chemical-related, environment, biology, and medicine, are also presented. The concluding chapter addresses the basic troubleshooting knowledge and considers other chromatographic problems and methods for their rectification.

Book Synopsis Gas Chromatography with Glass Capillary Columns by : Walter Jennings
Download or read book Gas Chromatography with Glass Capillary Columns written by Walter Jennings and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas Chromatography with Glass Capillary Columns describes glass capillary technology and the selection, installation, evaluation, and use of glass open tubular columns for gas chromatography. Discussions are organized around the glass capillary column; column coating and installation; inlet systems; measurement of column efficiency; temperature programming and carrier flow; and retention behavior. Column selection and stability and sample preparation are also covered. This text is comprised of 13 chapters; the first of which introduces the reader to the practical considerations involved in the selection, installation, evaluation, and use of high-resolution open tubular glass capillary columns, along with the theory of the chromatographic process. The discussion then turns to the influence of operating parameters and storage conditions on the interrelated forces involved in coating glass capillary columns; the dynamic and static techniques of column coating; and design defects in the inlet system caused by excessive volume and dead space. The chapters that follow focus on general considerations in column attachment, measurement of column efficiency, and retention behavior of carrier gas, along with the operating temperature of the column, the choice of carrier gas, and carrier gas velocity. This book also looks at the factors that affect column stability, materials of restricted volatility, and some applications of glass capillary gas chromatography. This reference material is intended primarily for students and researchers interested in gas chromatography with glass capillary columns.

Book excerpt: Analytical techniques based on separation processes, such as chromatography and electrophoresis, are finding a growing range of applications in chemical, pharmaceutical and clinical laboratories. This series provides the analyst in these laboratories with well focused books covering individual techniques, so that they can be applied more efficiently and effectively to contemporary analytical problems. Capillary gas chromatography is one of the most powerful separation tools available to analysts working in a wide diversity of disciplines. Capillary Gas Chromatography will give practising analysts a sound theoretical and practical knowledge of the subject, giving a thorough account of the many fascinating and important developments occurring in the field in recent years. The theory is presented with practical applications in mind. Common problems encountered when using this technique, and the means of overcoming them are also presented. Capillary Gas Chromatography will be of great practical use to analytical chemists using the technique, including those in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, environmental, clinical, and petrochemical industries. It will also be invaluable for graduate students and researchers involved in the need to separate complex mixtures.

Book excerpt: Gets you Quickly up to Speed on the Principles and Practice of Modern Gas Chromatography Gas Chromatography (GC) is undoubtedly the most widely used technique for the separation and analysis of volatile compounds. Yet comprehensive guides to contemporary GC theory and practice are surprisingly hard to find. Basic Gas Chromatography fills this significant void in the GC literature. Written by two well-known practitioners and educators in GC, it offers thorough coverage of the basic principles and techniques of modern gas chromatography. Designed to serve as a primer/working reference for bench chemists and as a textbook for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students, it presents the fundamentals in a straightforward and logical fashion. Theoretical issues are explained without complicated equations and derivations and always in terms of how they relate to practical operating principles. Timely, comprehensive, and accessible, Basic Gas Chromatography: * Provides a balanced presentation of theory and practice * Includes both capillary column and packed column chromatography * Uses the new IUPAC terms throughout, cross-referenced to traditional terms and symbols * Offers a wealth of helpful hints, step-by-step guidelines, and trouble - shooting tips * Briefly covers GC-MS, headspace analysis, chiral analysis, solid phase microextraction, and other cutting-edge topics
