Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Higher Algebra AN American student approaching the higher parts of mathe maties usually finds himself unfamiliar with most of the main facts of algebra, to say nothing of their proofs. Thus he has only a rudimentary knowledge of systems of linear equations, and he knows next to nothing about the subject of quadratic forms. Students in this condition, if they receive any algebraic instruction at all, are usually plunged into the detailed study of some special branch of algebra, such as the theory of equations or the theory of invariants, where their lack of real mastery of algebraic principles makes it almost inevitable that the work done should degenerate to the level of purely formal manipulations. It is the object of the present book to introduce the student to higher algebra in such a way that he shall, on the, one hand, learn what is meant by a proof in algebra and acquaint himself with the proofs of the most fundamental facts, and, on the other, become familiar with many important results of algebra which are new to him. The concepts of ring and field are introduced through study of the familiar examples of the integers and polynomials, with much emphasis placed on congruence classes leading the way to finite groups and finite fields. New examples and theory are integrated in a well-motivated fashion and made relevant by many applications -- to cryptography, coding, integration, history of mathematics, and especially to elementary and computational number theory. The later chapters include expositions of Rabiin's probabilistic primality test, quadratic reciprocity, and the classification of finite fields. Over 900 exercises, ranging from routine examples to extensions of theory, are scattered throughout the book, with hints and answers for many of them included in an appendix.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Higher Algebra: A Sequel to Elementary Algebra for Schools The present work is intended as a sequel to our Elementary Algebra for Schools. The first few chapters are devoted to a fuller discussion of Ratio, Proportion, Variation, and the Progressions, which in the former work were treated in an elementary manner; and we have here introduced theorems and examples which are unsuitable for a first course of reading. From this point the work covers ground for the most part new to the student, and enters upon subjects of special importance: these we have endeavoured to treat minutely and thoroughly, discussing both bookwork and examples with that fulness which we have always found necessary in our experience as teachers. It has been our aim to discuss all the essential parts as completely as possible within the limits of a single volume, but in a few Of the later chapters it has been im possible to find room for more than an introductory sketch in all such cases our Object has been to map out a suitable first course of reading, referring the student to special treatises for fuller information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Solutions of the Examples in Higher Algebra This work forms a Key or Companion to the Higher Algebra. And contains full solutions of nearly all the Examples. In many cases more than one solution is given, while through out the book frequent reference is made to the text and illustrative Examples in the Algebra. The work has been undertaken at the request of many teachers who have introduced the Algebra into their classes, and for such readers it is mainly intended; but it is hoped that, if ju diciously used, the solutions may also be found serviceable by that large and increasing class of students who read Mathematics without the assistance of a teacher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Higher Algebra An American student approaching the higher parts of mathematics usually finds himself unfamiliar with most of the main facts algebra, to say nothing of their proofs. The book being thus intended, not as a compendium, but really, as its title states, only as an introduction to higher algebra, the attempt has been made throughout to lay a sufficiently broad foundation to enable the reader to pursue his further studies intelligently, rather than to carry any single topic to logical completeness. No apology seems necessary for the omission of even such important subjects as Galois's Theory and a systematic treatment of invariants. A selection being necessary, those subjects have been chosen for treatment which have proved themselves of greatest importance in geometry and analysis, as well as in algebra, and the relations of algebraic theories to geometry have been emphasized throughout. At the same time it must be borne in mind that the subject primarily treated is algebra, not analytic geometry, so that such geometric information as is given is necessarily of a fragmentary and somewhat accidental character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ray's New Higher Algebra: Elements of Algebra, for Colleges, Schools, and Private Students It is both a demonstrative and a practical science - a system of truths and reasoning, from which is derived a collection of Rules that may be used in the solution of an endless variety of problems, not only interesting to the student, but many of which are of the highest possible utility in the arts of life. The object of the present treatise is to present an outline of this science in a brief, clear, and practical form. The aim throughout has been to demonstrate every principle, and to fur nish the student the means of understanding clearly the rationale of every process he is required to perform. No effort has been made to simplify subjects by omitting that which is difficult, but rather to present them in such a light as to render their acquisi tion within the reach of all who will take the pains to study. After an introduction to sets of functions, mathematical induction, and arbitrary numbers, this book goes on considering some combinatorial problems, complex numbers, determinants, vector spaces, and linear equations. These topics are followed by discussions of the determination of polynomials in ne variable, rings of real and complex polynomials, and algebraic and transcendental numbers. The final chapters deal with the polynomials in several variables, symmetric functions, the theory of elimination, and the quadratic and Hermitian forms. This book will be of value to mathematicians and students.

The symbol, was introduced by Leibnitz in 1693. Multiplication was indicated as early as the thirteenth century, in Hindu and Italian books, by simply writing the factors Side by Side. This method was forgotten for a time, and was reintroduced by German algebraists during the fifteenth century.
