Written in an upbeat and engaging style, the series presents 60 tips and techniques with anecdotes, examples, and exercises that the reader can immediately apply to make their work life more efficient, effective, and satisfying. Many people find themselves dealing with dozens of e-mails every day whose impact has been lost in cyberspace and, as a result, frequently miss the mark. E-mail In An Instant helps readers to gain mastery over their electronic mail box and be more effective at getting their messages across with style and impact as well as managing and responding to the messages they receive. The book shows everyone from corporate executives to stay-at-home moms how to improve their e-mail efficiency by: Accelerating your workday by knowing what to send and what not to Assessing your e-mail writing style Adopting time management for your mailbox Learning to separate the trivial from the important Learning how to say no, e-mail style Writing business e-mails for other cultures

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Email is a widely available and modern means of communication that has replaced the traditional system of posting letters. It is a fast and efficient method of communicating with anyone regardless of their location or time zone. One of the major advantages of email is that it enables users to attach files and documents, making it easy to share information with others. Additionally, emails can be saved as drafts, allowing users to revisit them later before sending or deleting them. Email also creates a paper trail, making it easy to track communication between different parties, which is particularly useful in business environments where evidence might be required in case of legal disputes. Despite its many advantages, email has some limitations. For instance, it can be difficult to read emotions in emails, leading to misunderstandings or misinterpretations of messages. Moreover, it is not very effective in situations that require immediate responses or when the sender is not sure if the recipient is actively checking their email. Finally, emails are vulnerable to hacking and phishing attacks, which can result in unauthorized access to a user's account or loss of sensitive information. Therefore, users must be cautious when sending and receiving emails to ensure their accounts and information are secured.

Book excerpt: In this original study, Milne moves between close readings of letters, postcards and emails, and investigations of the material, technological infrastructures of these forms, to answer the question: How does presence function as an aesthetic and rhetorical strategy within networked communication practices? As her work reveals, the relation between old and new communication systems is more complex than allowed in much contemporary media theory. Although the correspondents of letters, postcards and emails are not, usually, present to one another as they write and read their exchanges, this does not necessarily inhibit affective communication. Indeed, this study demonstrates how physical absence may, in some instances, provide correspondents with intense intimacy and a spiritual, almost telepathic, sense of the other’s presence. While corresponding by letter, postcard or email, readers construe an imaginary, incorporeal body for their correspondents that, in turn, reworks their interlocutor’s self-presentation. In this regard the fantasy of presence reveals a key paradox of cultural communication, namely that material signifiers can be used to produce the experience of incorporeal presence.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller! From New York Times bestselling author Cal Newport comes a bold vision for liberating workers from the tyranny of the inbox--and unleashing a new era of productivity. Modern knowledge workers communicate constantly. Their days are defined by a relentless barrage of incoming messages and back-and-forth digital conversations--a state of constant, anxious chatter in which nobody can disconnect, and so nobody has the cognitive bandwidth to perform substantive work. There was a time when tools like email felt cutting edge, but a thorough review of current evidence reveals that the "hyperactive hive mind" workflow they helped create has become a productivity disaster, reducing profitability and perhaps even slowing overall economic growth. Equally worrisome, it makes us miserable. Humans are simply not wired for constant digital communication. We have become so used to an inbox-driven workday that it's hard to imagine alternatives. But they do exist. Drawing on years of investigative reporting, author and computer science professor Cal Newport makes the case that our current approach to work is broken, then lays out a series of principles and concrete instructions for fixing it. In A World without Email, he argues for a workplace in which clear processes--not haphazard messaging--define how tasks are identified, assigned and reviewed. Each person works on fewer things (but does them better), and aggressive investment in support reduces the ever-increasing burden of administrative tasks. Above all else, important communication is streamlined, and inboxes and chat channels are no longer central to how work unfolds. The knowledge sector's evolution beyond the hyperactive hive mind is inevitable. The question is not whether a world without email is coming (it is), but whether you'll be ahead of this trend. If you're a CEO seeking a competitive edge, an entrepreneur convinced your productivity could be higher, or an employee exhausted by your inbox, A World Without Email will convince you that the time has come for bold changes, and will walk you through exactly how to make them happen.

Book excerpt: The Internet is a global network of interconnected devices and communication systems that enables individuals to access a wide range of information and resources from anywhere in the world. The origins of the Internet can be traced back to the 1960s, when the US Department of Defense created a network of computers to exchange information and facilitate communication among researchers and scientists. This network, known as ARPANET, became the foundation for the Internet as we know it today. Over the past few decades, the Internet has undergone a remarkable transformation, becoming an essential tool for communication, commerce, education, and entertainment. The advent of the web in the 1990s marked a major milestone in the evolution of the Internet, as it enabled individuals to publish and access information in a decentralized manner. Today, the Internet is an ever-expanding ecosystem that comprises billions of websites, social media platforms, e-commerce sites, online communities, and more – all of which are powered by advanced technologies and infrastructure that enable quick, reliable access to information and services.
