Beginning with the basics of automata and formal languages, the book discusses the concepts of regular set and regular expression, context-free grammar and pushdown automata in detail. Then, the book explains the various compiler writing principles and simultaneously discusses the logical phases of a compiler and the environment in which they do their job. It also elaborates the concepts of syntax analysis, bottom-up parsing, syntax-directed translation, semantic analysis, optimization, and storage organization. Finally, the text concludes with a discussion on the role of code generator and its basic issues such as instruction selection, register allocation, target programs and memory management. The book is primarily designed for one semester course in Automata and Compiler Design for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Computer Science and Information Technology. It will also be helpful to those preparing for competitive examinations like GATE, DRDO, PGCET, etc. KEY FEATURES: Covers both automata and compiler design so that the readers need not have to consult two books separately. Includes plenty of solved problems to enable the students to assimilate the fundamental concepts. For students of computer science, building a compiler from scratch is a rite of passage: a challenging and fun project that offers insight into many different aspects of computer science, some deeply theoretical, and others highly practical. This book offers a one semester introduction into compiler construction, enabling the reader to build a simple compiler that accepts a C-like language and translates it into working X86 or ARM assembly language. It is most suitable for undergraduate students who have some experience programming in C, and have taken courses in data structures and computer architecture.

Finite automata, Turing machines, models of computation, complexity, solvability, and other topics that form a foundation of modern programming are discussed -first with a gentle theoretical orientation, and then applied through programming code and practical examples. JFLAP projects and applications are integrated throughout the book, and C# is used for all code.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this textbook has been fully revised and adds material about loop optimisation, function call optimisation and dataflow analysis. It presents techniques for making realistic compilers for simple programming languages, using techniques that are close to those used in "real" compilers, albeit in places slightly simplified for presentation purposes. All phases required for translating a high-level language to symbolic machine language are covered, including lexing, parsing, type checking, intermediate-code generation, machine-code generation, register allocation and optimisation, interpretation is covered briefly. Aiming to be neutral with respect to implementation languages, algorithms are presented in pseudo-code rather than in any specific programming language, but suggestions are in many cases given for how these can be realised in different language flavours. Introduction to Compiler Design is intended for an introductory course in compiler design, suitable for both undergraduate and graduate courses depending on which chapters are used.

Book excerpt: The third edition of this textbook has been fully revised and adds material about the SSA form, polymorphism, garbage collection, and pattern matching. It presents techniques for making realistic compilers for simple to intermediate-complexity programming languages. The techniques presented in the book are close to those used in professional compilers, albeit in places slightly simplified for presentation purposes. "Further reading" sections point to material about the full versions of the techniques. All phases required for translating a high-level language to symbolic machine language are covered, and some techniques for optimising code are presented. Type checking and interpretation are also included. Aiming to be neutral with respect to implementation languages, algorithms are mostly presented in pseudo code rather than in any specific language, but suggestions are in many places given for how these can be realised in different language paradigms. Depending on how much of the material from the book is used, it is suitable for both undergraduate and graduate courses for introducing compiler design and implementation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While compilers for high-level programming languages are large complex software systems, they have particular characteristics that differentiate them from other software systems. Their functionality is almost completely well-defined – ideally there exist complete precise descriptions of the source and target languages, while additional descriptions of the interfaces to the operating system, programming system and programming environment, and to other compilers and libraries are often available. The implementation of application systems directly in machine language is both difficult and error-prone, leading to programs that become obsolete as quickly as the computers for which they were developed. With the development of higher-level machine-independent programming languages came the need to offer compilers that were able to translate programs into machine language. Given this basic challenge, the different subtasks of compilation have been the subject of intensive research since the 1950s. This book is not intended to be a cookbook for compilers, instead the authors' presentation reflects the special characteristics of compiler design, especially the existence of precise specifications of the subtasks. They invest effort to understand these precisely and to provide adequate concepts for their systematic treatment. This is the first book in a multivolume set, and here the authors describe what a compiler does, i.e., what correspondence it establishes between a source and a target program. To achieve this the authors specify a suitable virtual machine (abstract machine) and exactly describe the compilation of programs of each source language into the language of the associated virtual machine for an imperative, functional, logic and object-oriented programming language. This book is intended for students of computer science. Knowledge of at least one imperative programming language is assumed, while for the chapters on the translation of functional and logic programming languages it would be helpful to know a modern functional language and Prolog. The book is supported throughout with examples, exercises and program fragments.
