Book excerpt: This advanced undergraduate textbook begins with the Lagrangian formulation of Analytical Mechanics and then passes directly to the Hamiltonian formulation and the canonical equations, with constraints incorporated through Lagrange multipliers. Hamilton's Principle and the canonical equations remain the basis of the remainder of the text. Topics considered for applications include small oscillations, motion in electric and magnetic fields, and rigid body dynamics. The Hamilton-Jacobi approach is developed with special attention to the canonical transformation in order to provide a smooth and logical transition into the study of complex and chaotic systems. Finally the text has a careful treatment of relativistic mechanics and the requirement of Lorentz invariance. The text is enriched with an outline of the history of mechanics, which particularly outlines the importance of the work of Euler, Lagrange, Hamilton and Jacobi. Numerous exercises with solutions support the exceptionally clear and concise treatment of Analytical Mechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovative and mathematically sound treatment of the foundations of analytical mechanics and the relation of classical mechanics to relativity and quantum mechanics: Part I is an introduction to analytical mechanics, suitable for a graduate or advanced undergraduate course. Part II presents material designed principally for graduate students. The appendices in Part III summarize the mathematical methods used in the text. The book integrates relativity into the teaching of classical mechanics. Part II introduces special relativity and covariant mechanics. It develops extended Lagrangian and Hamiltonian methods that treat time as a transformable coordinate rather than the fixed parameter of Newtonian physics, including an extended definition of canonical transformation that both simplifies the theory and no longer excludes the Lorentz transformation. The book assists students who study classical mechanics as a preparation for quantum mechanics. Analytical mechanics is presented using methods - such as linear vector operators and dyadics - that familiarize the student with similar operator techniques in quantum theory and the dyadic Dirac notation. Comparisons to quantum mechanics appear throughout the text. For example, the chapter on Hamilton-Jacobi theory includes discussions of the closely related Bohm hidden variable model and Feynman path integral method. The chapter on angle-action variables concludes with a section on the old quantum theory. Several of the fundamental problems in physics - the development of quantum information technology, and the problem of quantizing the gravitational field, to name two - require a rethinking of the quantum-classical connection. Graduate students preparing for research careers will find a graduate mechanics course based on this book to be an essential bridge between their undergraduate training and advanced study in analytical mechanics, relativity, and quantum mechanics. New to the Second Edition: Part I contains new chapters on Central Force Motion (Chapter 11) and Scattering (Chapter 12), and new material on time-independent canonical transformations. Part II contains a new chapter (Chapter 22) on Angle-Action Variables. These additions allow a more flexible use of the text. Part I is now a self-contained, introductory analytical mechanics course. The instructor can then select a range of topics from Part II appropriate to the interests of more advanced students.

It offers a consummate exposition of the subject of analytical mechanics through a deep analysis of its most fundamental concepts. The book has served as a desk text for at least two generations of researchers working in those fields where the Soviet Union accomplished the greatest technological breakthrough of the 20th century - a race into space. Those and other related fields continue to be intensively explored since then, and the book clearly demonstrates how the fundamental concepts of mechanics work in the context of up-to-date engineering problems.

Book excerpt: Tensor Calculus and Analytical Dynamics provides a concise, comprehensive, and readable introduction to classical tensor calculus - in both holonomic and nonholonomic coordinates - as well as to its principal applications to the Lagrangean dynamics of discrete systems under positional or velocity constraints. The thrust of the book focuses on formal structure and basic geometrical/physical ideas underlying most general equations of motion of mechanical systems under linear velocity constraints. Written for the theoretically minded engineer, Tensor Calculus and Analytical Dynamics contains uniquely accessbile treatments of such intricate topics as: tensor calculus in nonholonomic variables Pfaffian nonholonomic constraints related integrability theory of Frobenius The book enables readers to move quickly and confidently in any particular geometry-based area of theoretical or applied mechanics in either classical or modern form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mécanique analytique presents a comprehensive account of Lagrangian mechanics. In this work, Lagrange used the Principle of Virtual Work in conjunction with the Lagrangian Multiplier to solve all problems of statics. For the treatment of dynamics, a third concept had to be added to the first two - d'Alembert's Principle - in order to develop the Lagrangian equations of motion. Hence, Lagrange was able to unify the entire science of mechanics using only three concepts and algebraic operations.

Book excerpt: Analytical Mechanics is the investigation of motion with the rigorous tools of mathematics, with remarkable applications to many branches of physics (Astronomy, Statistical and Quantum Mechanics, etc.). Rooted in the works of Lagrange, Euler, and Poincaré, it is a classical subject with fascinating developments and still rich with open problems. It addresses such fundamental questions as: Is the solar system stable? Is there a unifying "economy" principle in mechanics? How can a point mass be described as a "wave"? This book was written to fill a gap between elementary expositions and more advanced (and clearly more stimulating) material. It takes the challenge to explain the most relevant ideas and to show the most important applications using plain language and "simple" mathematics, often through an original approach. Basic calculus is enough for the reader to proceed through the book and when more is required, the new mathematical concepts are illustrated, again in plain language. The book is conceived in such a way that some difficult chapters can be bypassed, whilst still grasping the main ideas. However, anybody wishing to go deeper in some directions will find at least the flavour of recent developments and many bibliographical references. Theory is always accompanied by examples. Many problems are suggested and some are completely worked out at the end of each chapter. The book may effectively be used (and it is in several Italian Universities) for undergraduate as well as for PhD courses in Physics and Mathematics at various levels.
