Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a clear and thorough introduction to meta-analysis, the process of synthesizing data from a series of separate studies. Meta-analysis has become a critically important tool in fields as diverse as medicine, pharmacology, epidemiology, education, psychology, business, and ecology. Introduction to Meta-Analysis: Outlines the role of meta-analysis in the research process Shows how to compute effects sizes and treatment effects Explains the fixed-effect and random-effects models for synthesizing data Demonstrates how to assess and interpret variation in effect size across studies Clarifies concepts using text and figures, followed by formulas and examples Explains how to avoid common mistakes in meta-analysis Discusses controversies in meta-analysis Features a web site with additional material and exercises A superb combination of lucid prose and informative graphics, written by four of the world’s leading experts on all aspects of meta-analysis. Borenstein, Hedges, Higgins, and Rothstein provide a refreshing departure from cookbook approaches with their clear explanations of the what and why of meta-analysis. The book is ideal as a course textbook or for self-study. My students, who used pre-publication versions of some of the chapters, raved about the clarity of the explanations and examples. David Rindskopf, Distinguished Professor of Educational Psychology, City University of New York, Graduate School and University Center, & Editor of the Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics. The approach taken by Introduction to Meta-analysis is intended to be primarily conceptual, and it is amazingly successful at achieving that goal. The reader can comfortably skip the formulas and still understand their application and underlying motivation. For the more statistically sophisticated reader, the relevant formulas and worked examples provide a superb practical guide to performing a meta-analysis. The book provides an eclectic mix of examples from education, social science, biomedical studies, and even ecology. For anyone considering leading a course in meta-analysis, or pursuing self-directed study, Introduction to Meta-analysis would be a clear first choice. Jesse A. Berlin, ScD Introduction to Meta-Analysis is an excellent resource for novices and experts alike. The book provides a clear and comprehensive presentation of all basic and most advanced approaches to meta-analysis. This book will be referenced for decades. Michael A. McDaniel, Professor of Human Resources and Organizational Behavior, Virginia Commonwealth University

Book excerpt: This text is designed for a one semester Introduction to Analysis course. One main difference is the chapter on set, functions and proofs. This book will be attractive when a Transition to Advanced Mathematics course is not offered. The first chapter covers an introduction to proofs. The text progresses into sequences and limits, continuity and differentiation. Riemann Integration, Sequences and Series Functions and the Topology of the Real Numbers round out the presentation. The author does an excellent job of connecting the material by suggesting to students where to find particular theorems, referring back to previous material while introducting new topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various editions of the Dictionary of Occupational Titles have served as the Employment Service's basic tool for matching workers and jobs. The Dictionary of Occupational Titles has also played an important role in establishing skill and training requirements and developing Employment Service testing batteries for specific occupations. However, the role of the Dictionary of Occupational Titles has been called into question as a result of planned changes in the operation of the Employment Service. A plan to automate the operations of Employment Service offices using a descriptive system of occupational keywords rather than occupational titles has led to a claim that a dictionary of occupational titles and the occupational research program that produces it are outmoded. Since the automated keyword system does not rely explicitly on defined occupational titles, it is claimed that the new system would reduce costs by eliminating the need for a research program to supply the occupational definitions. In light of these considerations, the present volume evaluates the future need for the Dictionary of Occupational Titles.

The traditional road to statistical knowledge is blocked, for most, by a formidable wall of mathematics. The approach in An Introduction to the Bootstrap avoids that wall. It arms scientists and engineers, as well as statisticians, with the computational techniques they need to analyze and understand complicated data sets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary of Start with Why Start with Why is a book written by Simon Sinek. Someone may ask, what is so special about this book? In this book, Sinek discusses success, but not in the usual, “follow these steps to achieve anything you want,” way. Sinek uses a different approach than readers tend to find in other literature of the same type. The very first premise that the author uses to lead us into his book is a premise that contains one simple word: why. Why do some people reach success while others do not? Why do some groups manage to team-up and endure challenges, thus succeeding, while others fail to do so? What is it that makes some people different from others when it comes to achieving success? The entire book revolves around that question word. But the interesting thing about it, which eventually leads to even more interesting conclusion, is that there is an answer to this “why.” Sinek uses many examples from real life and from people he knew or had researched, and shows how they managed to succeed. By using these examples, the author shows his readers that if others can succeed, so can we. When it comes to practical answers to “why,” the author invests significant effort in finding all the answers. Start with Why is an intriguing and fascinating read, which will surely make readers ask themselves this simple, yet tricky question: why? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this indispensable companion to any theatre class in which scripts are read and interpreted, Pritner and Walters offer five sequential levels of reading designed to lead to a deep understanding of the text. Level one imagines the play as performed in front of an audience; level two examines the deep structure of the conflict; level three examines given circumstances and the type of relationship the play creates between the audience and the production; level four looks closely at characters’ behavior and reactions to their given circumstances, surveys conflict in each scene, and encourages supplemental research about the play; finally, level five synthesizes the information acquired from the preceding levels. Each chapter introduces a concept that is then explored by studying its application to The Glass Menagerie, chosen for both its accessibility and its complexity. Other plays discussed include works by Molière, Shakespeare, Sophocles, and August Wilson. End-of-chapter questions are applicable to any play.
