Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Power of this prayer of Imam Muhammad al-Dar’i lies in its simplicity, its purity, and its sincere supplication. It is essentially a plea to God that our transgressions be overlooked, that divine mercy be bestowed upon us, that social justice be restored in spite of us, that wrongs be righted, and that righteousness reign once again in our lands, so that the destitute may no longer be in need, the young may be educated, the animals’ purpose fulfilled, rain restored, and bounties poured forth. It is a plea to be freed from the aggression of foreigners in lands over which they have no right—a plea much needed in our modern world, rampant as it is with invasions and territorial occupations. Ultimately, it asks not that our enemies be destroyed, but simply that their plots, and the harm they cause, be halted. Its essence is mercy, which in turn is the essence of the Messenger of God, Muhammad (peace and blessing of God be upon him): “And We have only sent you as a mercy to all the worlds.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates why and how it is necessary to redesign Islamic Education curriculum in the K-12 sector globally. From Western public schools that integrate Muslim perspectives to be culturally responsive, to public and private schools in Muslim minority and majority contexts that teach Islamic studies as a core subject or teach from an Islamic perspective, the volume highlights the unique global and sociocultural contexts that support the disparate trajectories of Islamic Education curricula. Divided into three distinct parts, the text discusses current Islamic education curricula and considers new areas for inclusion as part of a general renewal effort that includes developing curricula from an Islamic worldview, and the current aspirations of Islamic education globally. By providing insights on key concepts related to teaching Islam, case studies of curriculum achievements and pitfalls, and suggested processes and pillars for curriculum development, contributors present possibilities for researchers and educators to think about teaching Islam differently. This text will benefit researchers, doctoral students, and academics in the fields of secondary education, Islamic education, and curriculum studies. Those interested in religious education as well as the sociology and theory of religion more broadly will also enjoy this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I highly recommend ‘Introduction to Islamic Law: Principles of Civil, Criminal, and International Law under the Shari‘a’ to scholars and any individual who desires to learn about the Shari‘a and its basic values through an objective, methodical study.” Mohamed A. ‘Arafa, Ph.D. Assistant and Adjunct Professor of Law Alexandria University Faculty of Law, Egypt Islamic law (Shari‘a) is an all-inclusive legal tradition that creates a seamless web reaching from the public sphere into the private sphere of life. Thus, the Shari‘a recognizes no bifurcation between legislation and religion, no wall of separation between the mosque and the state, and no compartmentalization of morality, faith, and law. Nonetheless, the duties under Islamic law can be divided into two large subcategories, the first and most important of which mainly concerns the private, individual relationship between God and man. In contrast, the second duty mainly concerns the public, transactional relationships among individuals which – in a secular framework – is most analogous to “law.” Introduction to Islamic Law begins with an overview of Islam as a whole, including a discussion of the sources of Islamic law and sectarian distinctions. Then, the book thoroughly addresses the secondary duties of Islamic law, which govern daily transactions between individuals, including the law of contracts, property, banking and finance, and familial relations as well as criminal law and procedure and the law of war. The legal rules embodied within the Shari‘a are mandatory in jurisdictions adhering to a strict application of Islamic law. However, Islamic law remains highly influential even in Muslim-majority countries with secular legal codes. Nevertheless, given recent developments in the Arab world, as well as the rise of terrorism in the name of Islam, the Shari‘a is a subject that has seeped into the national dialogue of wholly secular, non-Muslim jurisdictions. Thus, Introduction to Islamic Law is offered for scholars and students – both Muslim and non-Muslim, with or without a legal background – for the purpose of obtaining a basic understanding of the foundational concepts of the Shari‘a.
