Book excerpt: Firms operating in supply chains face a large degree of operational uncertainty inherited from the external coordination with outside suppliers. Operational uncertainty can be translated to supply disruptions and then costly production disruptions. Reducing supply chain operational uncertainty requires high-quality interorganizational coordination with suppliers. A key to high-quality coordination is a good communication mechanism for information exchange with suppliers. It is a commonly accepted fact now that information technology, especially interorganizational information systems (IOS), can play a significant role in improving interorganizational communication and coordination in supply chains. However, the research pertaining to how to implement such IOS to reduce the operational uncertainty of supply chains has not been adequate. There is a lack of rigorous technical guidelines, in both academics and industrial practice, for building IOS that leads to smooth supply chain operations. The objective of this study is to enhance this field of technical IOS research by (1) developing a technical classification of IT-based interorganizational data exchange in supply chain operations; and, (2) investigating the main effect of IT-based interorganizational data exchange on the operational uncertainty of supply chains, as well as the mediating effect of the redundancy of supplier pool on the relationship between IT-based interorganizational data exchange and the operational uncertainty of supply chains. IT-based interorganizational data exchange was proposed to be a three-order, four-factor construct, varying on the continuum from "intricate" to "simplified". The first second-order sub-construct is Data Interchange Format (Data Specification and Messaging Protocol). The second second-order subconstruct is System Coupling (interface coupling and time coupling). A questionnaire survey was distributed to three industrial clusters (computers and electronics, paper and chemicals) examining the relationships among IT-based interorganizational data exchange, the redundancy of supplier pool and the uncertainty in supply chain operations. The results suggested that simplified IT-based interorganizational data exchange was positively related to the reduced factual uncertainty of supply operations and was negatively related to the redundancy of supplier pool. Meanwhile, IT-based interorganizational data exchange and the redundancy of supplier pool were found to be cooperative suppressors when they were used together to predict the uncertainty of supply chain operations.

Book excerpt: Globalization of business markets and the rapid development of information technology are making information management more and more important. By combining managerial and economic theory, this book builds a framework to demonstrate facilitating factors for inter-organizational information exchange and the effects of information exchange on supply chain compliance and business performance. We have strong indications, both theoretical and empirical, that such an integrative conceptual framework is needed to grasp the complexity of information exchange between business partners. Using empirical evidence from the poultry chain in Mainland China, this book supports the complementary roles between contractual governance and trust in the process of improving the willingness to communicate. It also proposes that communication quality needs to be broader than information quality. Finally, it illustrates that in order to stand out from main competitors, companies should not only commit to realizing more potential communication benefits for themselves, but also for their main partners. Different solutions for buyers and suppliers in optimizing their business performance are also discussed. This book is recommended for a broad audience of professionals, practitioners and policy makers who concern themselves with information management, supply chain management, channel relationship management and performance management.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, Otto Beisheim School of Management Vallendar (Kuehne Foundation Chair of Logistics and Services Management), course: Literature Seminar in Supply Chain Management, language: English, abstract: Today’s business environment is unstable and uncertain. Shorter product life cycles, uncertain demand due to quickly changing customer needs, offshore production, higher supply chain complexity as a consequence of global and severe competition, and fast technological progress are all factors that foster this. “The economic environment is dynamic and the only certainty about it is it will continue to change." To cope with a high degree of uncertainty and increasing supply chain risk a company needs to establish a robust, resilient but still efficient supply chain. Due to the strong competition companies have to be responsive, introduce customized products quickly to the market and constantly work on their internal and external operations in order to gain a competitive advantage. They not only have to offer quality to gain customer satisfaction, but also speed and a reasonable price.

Book excerpt: During global crises, apart from humanitarian concerns, at the economic level, supply chains around the world can be impacted. These crises can cause huge uncertainties in both the supply and demand parts of supply chains. On one side, the demand for some products and services can be reduced. On the other side, manufacturers around the world are facing shortages of supplies of raw materials and parts because of interruptions in production, disruptions to transportation, and labor shortages. In this context, organizations start to re-examine their production and service systems based on digitization of operations to not only mitigate the risk but also to build a resilient supply chain while continuing to reduce costs and maximize profits. The question that can be asked is how the decentralized supply chains can integrate new technologies to compete in a risky environment in global crises. Digitalization of Decentralized Supply Chains During Global Crises provides new approaches of digitalization of decentralized supply chains and industries to help researchers, educators, consultants, and practitioners deal with global crises and improve the global performance of supply chains. Important topics covered include blockchain, internet of things, 3D technologies, and Industry 4.0 technologies within the context of digital supply chains. This book is important for supply chain managers, manufacturers, producers, logistics personnel, economists, practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students.

Book excerpt: Information technology has radically altered the management of supply chain operations; many business partners who are adjacent on the supply chain can gain from entering inter-organizational information sharing (IOIS) relationships and sharing information that was previously accessible to only one of them. This situation is typical in retailer-supplier logistics management relationships. The first part of our study analyzes different forms of virtual integration-relationships between independent companies that result in some of the operations resembling those of a single vertically integrated firm--and classifies them based on their models of information sharing across the supply chain. We find that there are four primary policies that firms adopt when they exchange information across the supply chain; these are EDI, vendor managed inventory (VMI), continuous replenishment (CR) and category management (CM). Typically, corporations view the development of inter-organizational information systems and the sharing of information as being targeted at increasing operational efficiency by reducing ordering costs, inventory costs and supply lead times. Many studies have focused on studying IOIS technology issues and estimating the value generated from these arrangements using traditional models of inventory and ordering costs. However, we find that in a number of cases, the information shared can have cross-functional value--it can also be used to improve a supplier's production planning and to alter their marketing and sales strategies. Paradoxically, however, suppliers who receive such information feel that not only are their benefits minimal, but they often end up worse off than before the IOIS was implemented. The second part of our study explains this paradox. We show how retailers and other buyers can successfully contract to end up with more value than is generated by the sharing of information. Using game-theoretic models of strategic interaction, we show that this effect intensifies as the competitive value of the information to the supplier's marketing and sales departments increases; we demonstrate how the supplier loses more and more value. Furthermore, the buyer need not actually share the information to derive these rents; we indicate why the possibility of sharing is sufficient, even when the buyer cannot independently create value from that information.

The ever expanding availability of digital information, however, brings with it the challenge of handling this information appropriately. While related challenges now appear in our daily lives, this is even more the case along supply chains, where a multitude of actors is involved. This doctoral thesis addresses the topic by linking theoretical rigor with practical relevance. By assessing the current state of research in supply chain management represented in literature reviews, a range of under-represented areas of research as well as potential future research directions in the field of supply chain management are identified. Focusing on one selected exemplary under-represented area of research, the thesis takes the digital business transformation perspective, portraying the value and role of digital information in a business function context. As research on the intersection of Big Data Analytics and supply chain management is still scarce, the conceptual work offers first insights into an emerging topic, both on the internal operations level and on the supply chain level. This is beneficial from a scientific as well as a managerial perspective, as a thorough understanding of the constituents of a digital ecosystem is a key ingredient for the competitiveness and overall productivity of the company and ultimately of the supply chain as a whole.

Book excerpt: This research is conducted within the broad theme of how interorganizational information systems may help firms to make better decisions and how these improved decisions may lead to improved firm performance. The theoretical model developed in this research reflects the notion that when higher quality information is exchanged between supply chain partners, outcomes of joint planning and decision-making processes will be improved, which will lead to improved firm performance. Within this framework, one of the fundamental propositions is that an effective interorganizational information system will increase the quality of the information exchanged between supply chain partners. The increased quality of information associated with interorganizational information systems is expected to be associated with better outcomes from joint planning and decision making processes, which are in turn expected to be associated with greater levels of performance. The theoretical model was tested using a sample of 169 purchasing and supply chain managers and executives primarily located in the United States. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed in this research to estimate the parameters associated with the relationships of interest. Key results from this research include the finding that information quality has a significant impact on the outcomes of eight different joint planning and decision making processes and that these processes are associated with certain firm-level performance outcomes. Further, within several of these processes, the effect of information quality on joint planning and decision making outcomes is significantly larger for interorganizational information system enabled information quality than for non-interorganizational information system enabled information quality. Theoretical and practical insight is developed within each of the eight joint planning and decision making contexts.

Book excerpt: "In this thesis, the impact of capacity tightness, information sharing, and reliability on the delivery reliability and cost in a supply chain with alternate suppliers is investigated. A hypothetical supply chain model is constructed for hypothesis testing using Arena [superscript Trademark] Simulation and Microsoft VBA [superscript Trademark]. The model extends the use of information sharing into the realm of reliability information sharing among supply chain members. Sharing internal reliability information with a downstream entity acts to reduce supply uncertainty. Reliability Information sharing refers to the sharing of three pieces of information that deal with the ability to deliver to the downstream entities. The first piece of information is that a failure has occurred. The second piece of information is the level of inventory. Finally, the status of the order is shared. The Reliability Information can then be used to alter the transportation lead time via a change of transportation mode or for real time order revision with an alternate supplier"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Multi-party computation (MPC) is a cryptographic technology that removes the need for TTPs in data sharing, as it allows conducting computations without having to disclose the underlying datasets. While MPC could resolve certain data-sharing barriers, it is uncertain under what conditions business actors prefer MPC over TTP-based data sharing. This paper explores how MPC affects organizational willingness to share sensitive data for collective purposes, focusing on Internet-of-Things (IoT) data within supply chains. We conduct an online experiment on 106 participants representing decision-makers in logistics organizations. We find that participants are more willing to share sensitive data via MPC-based applications than conventional TTP applications. Also, MPC significantly increases participants' perception of trustworthiness and security while sharing sensitive data. However, we find no difference in relative advantage between the two applications. Our study implies that technologies like MPC could allow companies to directly share data without trusted third parties, thus leveling the playing field of the data economy. Hence, regulators and policymakers may consider MPC and related privacy-preserving technologies as a way to break the dominance of big tech corporations in the data economy.
