Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on the study of the processes of intra-household bargaining power, decision-making, and allocation of resources followed by Mexican-origin immigrant families to invest in children's human capital. With the purpose to further understand these processes the following questions guide this research: (1) What characteristics affect bargaining power in the observed decision-making patterns within these households? (2) Are there asymmetrical and/ or competing decision making practices that differentiate preferences of mothers and fathers that may impact intra-household allocation of expenditures, and investments?, and (3) How do differences in intra-household bargaining power impact traditional outcomes of human capital investments in children such as the health or well being of their children? This research uses data from Niños Sanos, Familia Sana, a study focusing on a rural Mexican-origin immigrant community in the central valley to study the set of individual, family, and community characteristics that affect the determinants of intra-household bargaining power, decision-making, and resource allocation, to explore its effect on children's human capital outcomes in these communities. Although standard variables used in economic models help assess bargaining power within the household, additional characteristics related to the specific cultural experiences of these communities such as acculturation, isolation and immigration should be considered to provide a more culturally nuanced understanding of the household dynamics within these communities. Moreover, mother and father's characteristics are associated with particular expenditure patterns revealing asymmetric preferences in household expenditure. A measurement of child's growth supports evidence on the effect of mother and family characteristics on child's wellbeing and the need to provide further analysis into the study of intra-household dynamics to support relevant policy guidelines in these communities.

Book excerpt: This paper extends the collective approach to household behaviour by proposing and estimating a model in which the weights attached to individual members are endogenously determined. The estimation is conducted using two different data-sets from three Indian states. We find that relative bargaining power of the adult decision-makers has a statistically significant effect on the budget share of an item and that the effects are typically nonlinear and vary significantly across items. This implies that household welfare is better protected in households where bargaining power is spread evenly between the spouses than where one partner enjoys a dominant position.

We show that, within the same geographic, economic and social environments, households where members have 'stronger' familial ties (nuclear family households) achieve near Pareto efficient allocation of productive resources and Pareto efficient allocation of consumption while households with 'weaker' familial ties (extended family households) do not. We propose a theoretical model of the household based on the idea that altruism between household members vary with familial ties which generates predictions consistent with the observed empirical patterns.

Book excerpt: Participation in household decisions and control over assets are often used as indicators of bargaining power. Yet spouses do not necessarily provide the same answers to questions about these topics. We examine differences in spouses’ answers to questions regarding who participates in decisions about household activities, who owns assets, and who decides to purchase assets. Disagreement is substantial and systematic, with women more likely to report joint ownership or decision making and men more likely to report sole male ownership or decision making. Analysis of correlations between agreement and women’s well-being finds that agreement on joint decision making/ownership is generally positively associated with beneficial outcomes for women compared with agreement on sole male decision making/ownership. Cases of disagreement where women recognize their involvement but men do not are also positively associated with good outcomes for women, but often to a lesser extent than when men agree that women are involved.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This dissertation examines the interaction between the intra-household resource management structure and asymmetric information over the quantity of resources available to the household as causes of income-hiding between spouses. I illustrate the incentives to hide income through a set of theoretical models, and I identify income-hiding empirically drawing survey data from Ghana. Income-hiding can have negative implications in the effectiveness of poverty alleviation policies, as spouses wishing to successfully hide income must allocate resources away from household public goods, such as child education and health, which are easily monitored. To illustrate the incentives to hide income, I developed a set of related, but distinct, theoretical models that differ in the contract over the allocation of resources between spouses. In Chapter 2, I show that the incentives to hide when income is unobserved by one spouse differ for three different household resource management structures. I illustrate this with a simple two-stage game. In the first stage, one spouse receives a monetary transfer that is unobserved by her spouse, and she must decide whether to reveal or to hide it. In the second stage, spouses bargain over the allocation of resources between a household good and private expenditure. The three models differ in the resource allocation mechanism that takes place in second stage of the game: housekeeping allowance, independent management, and joint management. Results indicate that hiding is more likely to occur in households with a housekeeping allowance contract, compared to independent or joint management. In joint management households, however, a spouse may hide in equilibrium if the change in bargaining power associated with revealing the transfer is not significant enough to compensate for the loss in discretionary expenditure. To identify income-hiding empirically, it is necessary to test whether unobservable resources attributable to one spouse are more likely to be allocated towards goods that are not easily monitored, relative to observable resources. In Chapter 3 I draw data from Southern Ghana. The data contains information on cross-reporting of each spouse's farm income. I exploit the variation in the degree of asymmetric information between spouses, measured as the difference between the husband's own reporting of farm sales and the wife's reporting of his farm sales to test whether the allocation of resources in Ghanaian households is consistent with hiding. For identification, the wife's clan and the husband's bride-wealth payments upon marriage are used as instruments for asymmetric information. My findings indicate that men hide farm sales income in the form of gifts to family members other than children and their spouse, which are not closely monitored. In doing so, men give up bargaining power as there is a reduction in observable expenditures such as public transportation. The wife's response is also consistent with hiding. As information asymmetries increase, she reduces her expenditure in non-essential items, such as prepared foods and oil, but increases personal spending as a result of the gain in bargaining power.

Book excerpt: Most economic models of the household assume that it may by treated as if all members share the same preferences or one member (a dictator) makes all resource allocation decisions. That assumption is tested by asking whether income in the hands of men has the same impact on household commodity demand as income in the hands of women. Drawing on budget data fro Brazil, we find that the distribution of income among men and women within the household does affect demand patterns and this is true for both no-labor income as well as total income. Income in the hands of women, relative to men, is associated with a larger increase in the share of the household budget devoted to human capital (household services, health and education) and also leisure (recreation and ceremonies) goods. The proportion of the budgest spent on food declines more if the income is in the hands of women although food composition also changes and nutrient intakes rise faster as women's income increases. When the sample is restricted to only those couples in which both have some income, however, there is little evidence that income in the hands of men and women have significantly different effects on commodity consumption.

Book excerpt: We examine the impact of ambiguous and contested land rights on investment and productivity in agricultural in Akwapim, Ghana. We show that individuals who hold powerful positions in a local political hierarchy have more secure tenure rights, and that as a consequence they invest more in land fertility and have substantially higher output. The intensity of investments on different plots cultivated by a given individual correspond to that individual's security of tenure over those specific plots, and in turn to the individual's position in the political hierarchy relevant to those specific plots. We interpret these results in the context of a simple model of the political allocation of land rights in local matrilineages.
