Fracture mechanics is developed in this text from its dislocation foundation. It is the only text to do so. It is written for the graduate student and the new investigator entering the fracture field as well as the experienced scientist who has not used the dislocation approach. The dislocation mechanics needed to find the dislocation density fields of crack tip plastic zones is developed in detail. All known dislocation based solutions are given for the three types of cracks in elastic-plastic solids are given.

Book Synopsis Dislocations, Mesoscale Simulations and Plastic Flow by : Ladislas Kubin
Download or read book Dislocations, Mesoscale Simulations and Plastic Flow written by Ladislas Kubin and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past twenty years, new experimental approaches, improved models and progress in simulation techniques brought new insights into long-standing issues concerning dislocation-based plasticity in crystalline materials. During this period, three-dimensional dislocation dynamics simulations appeared and reached maturity. Their objectives are to unravel the relation between individual and collective dislocation processes at the mesoscale, to establish connections with atom-scale studies of dislocation core properties and to bridge, in combination with modelling, the gap between defect properties and phenomenological continuum models for plastic flow. Dislocation dynamics simulations are becoming accessible to a wide range of users. This book presents to students and researchers in materials science and mechanical engineering a comprehensive coverage of the physical body of knowledge on which they are based. It includes classical studies, which are too often ignored, recent experimental and theoretical advances, as well as a discussion of selected applications on various topics.

Download or read book The Patella written by Giles R. Scuderi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problems of the patellofemoral joint remain a challenge to the orthopaedic surgeon. In spite of many articles in scientific journals, an outstanding monograph, and several excellent textbook chapters, the patella is still an enigma in many respects. The etiology of patellar pain is controversial, and there is no completely satisfying explanation for its cause or its relationship to chondromalacia. Curiously, neither the widespread use of arthroscopy nor the advent of newer diagnostic tests such as CT scanning and magnetic resonance imaging have cast much light. Without a better understanding of why patellar disorders occur it is not surprising that there is no consensus on how to fix them. Arthros copy has contributed little except to the patient's psyche. The currently most popular surgical treatment for recurrent dislocation of the patella was first described 50 years ago. One concrete advance, albeit a small one, is a better understanding of the role of anatomical abnormalities and patellofemoral dysplasia in patellar instabilities. It gives me great pleasure that many of the contributors are, like Dr.
Book Synopsis Into and Out of Dislocation by : C. S. Giscombe
Download or read book Into and Out of Dislocation written by C. S. Giscombe and published by . This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was on his third or fourth trip there that the poet C. S. Giscombe grew aware of the space Canada had staked out in his imagination. Giscombe later spent a winter with his family in British Columbia, and his time there provides a tens through which he interrogates his preoccupation with Canada's otherness. Giscombe writes that "border crossings are always sexy. And racial." And so this book is filled with both actual and metaphoric exploration -- his travels serve as points of departure for a series of riffs on racial, national, physical, and psychological borders.

Book Synopsis Dislocation: Awkward Spatial Transitions by : Philip Cooke
Download or read book Dislocation: Awkward Spatial Transitions written by Philip Cooke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the world is in the most serious turmoil it has experienced for many centuries. These multiple crises arise from the fundamental mistreatment by capitalist competition of the carrying capacity of the planet. Even before coronavirus, evidently morbid symptoms of over-development led many spatial planners to write of the threat of a new Dark Age. Many advocated a return to policy decentralisation as the Covid-19 crisis demonstrated once again the failure of ‘global controller’ mindsets to manage complex systems successfully. Dislocation: Awkward Spatial Transitions is a critical exploration of where spatial development processes and rules have gone wrong across many economies. The chapters lay out which mindsets have been responsible for this and gives pointers to new practices that aim to ameliorate the effects of past failings. In the first nine chapters, a mapping of key elements of the prevailing omni-crisis are summarised. These range from an exegesis of the Anthropocene, the rise of populism, the transition to neoliberalist anti-planning, and migration as planning issues with pleas for evolutionary change in spatial policy and process dynamics. Finally, a group of chapters explores the flailing as territorial governances tried to plot the rise of creative cities, 4.0 era industry and services, and in the built form, the role of 'starchitects' in city renewal. In the last part, attention is devoted to territorial innovation, knowledge recombination, sustainable mobility and, finally, green entrepreneurship, as necessary elements of a post-coronavirus, climate change mitigation and sustainable mobility set of survival strategies. The chapters in this book were originally published in the journal European Planning Studies.
Book Synopsis Logics of Dislocation by : Trevor J. Barnes
Download or read book Logics of Dislocation written by Trevor J. Barnes and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 1995-11-10 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LOGICS OF DISLOCATION is the first volume to systematically apply a postmodern sensibility to economic geography. In clear, jargon-free prose, author Trevor J. Barnes integrates a comprehensive review of economic geography's recent past with innovative work in economics, philosophy, and the sociology of science, clarifying key poststructuralist ideas and demonstrating their relevance to the field. In its critique of the rationalism and essentialism that characterizes prevailing models in the field, and its exploration of alternative conceptualizations, this book offers both a novel reconstruction of economic geography's past and a basis for a reconceived future.
Book Synopsis Dislocated Elements in Discourse by : Benjamin Shaer
Download or read book Dislocated Elements in Discourse written by Benjamin Shaer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-01-13 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is about 'dislocation' – the removal of phrases from their canonical positions in a sentence to its left or right edge. Dislocation encompasses a wide range of linguistic phenomena, related to nominal and adverbial expressions and to the information structuring notions of topic and focus; and takes intriguingly different forms across languages. This book reveals some of the empirical richness of dislocation and some key puzzles related to its syntactic, semantic, and discourse analysis.
Download or read book Dislocations written by J. Friedel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dislocations deals with the main properties of dislocations, including motion, climb, and vacancies. Topics covered include the elastic theory of dislocations, imperfect dislocations, and crystal growth, along with dislocation networks, annealing, and grain boundaries. The interaction of dislocations with other defects is also discussed. This book is comprised of 17 chapters and begins with an overview of the general properties of dislocations, with emphasis on perfect and real crystals and the general case for translation dislocations. The reader is then introduced to the motion of dislocations, including glide; vacancies and interstitial atoms; dislocation climb; imperfect dislocations and surfaces of misfit; and crystal growth, including growth from a liquid phase. The next section is devoted to the more or less complex networks of dislocations that can be formed in crystals, and to the plastic properties corresponding to these arrays. The remaining chapters explore the interactions of dislocations with other crystalline defects, primarily impurity atoms. This monograph is intended for physicists, metallurgists, materials scientists, research and engineering students, and research engineers.
