Book Synopsis Domestic Violence and Health Care by :
Download or read book Domestic Violence and Health Care written by and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-09-23 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore methods and techniques that health care providers can use to treat battered women?more humanely and effectively! This vital book examines the role of health care in the struggle to combat domestic violence. It shows how physicians can?and should?respond to victims of domestic violence, shares the success of the Family Violence Prevention Project, discusses what healthcare providers need to know about elder abuse, examines primary care physicians? screening practices for female partner abuse, and looks at the way Emergency Department personnel perceive the results of intimate partner violence (IPV). It also shows how family planning clinics can become ?empowerment zones? of battered women living in a rural setting and assesses the success of the WomanKind Program?an integrated model of 24-hour health care response to domestic violence against women. Domestic Violence and Health Care: Policies and Prevention also: investigates the relationship between perceived barriers and screening practices explores attitudes toward mandatory domestic violence reporting inquires into what pregnant women who have been abused think about their partners and their relationships examines the difference between Mexican and American women?s perception of the severity of various acts of abuse discusses the efficacy of an IPV assessment form using icons rather than descriptions to better communicate with migrant/seasonal workers whose command of English is poor From the editors: ?We have learned that screening for domestic violence by itself is a powerful intervention and can make a significant difference in a woman?s life. It helps validate that there is no excuse for domestic violence and demystifies the belief that providers are a part of the problem and not part of the solution. We have also learned that the consequences of intimate partner violence are manifested in a range of health conditions as well as in increased overall costly health care utilization. Screening tools and proposed mechanisms for treatment and follow-up are available. The next step in this effort requires validation of the screening tools and evaluation of the interventions currently underway. The purpose of this book is to provide some insight into our current understanding of the role health care plays in recognizing and treating victims of domestic violence. We hope to contribute to the understanding of the complexities of the causes and consequences of domestic violence on the life of a woman, and to provide insight into ways to positively alter the health care system and provider behavior.?
Book Synopsis Computer-assisted Screening for Intimate Partner Violence in Family Practice by : Farah Ahmad
Download or read book Computer-assisted Screening for Intimate Partner Violence in Family Practice written by Farah Ahmad and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The RCT participants in the intervention arm completed a computer-based health risk assessment before seeing their physician. The computer survey included questions on IPV and other health risks. Computer-generated risk reports were attached to patients' medical charts for review by their physician. Participants in the control arm received standard medical care. Data were collected by audio taping the medical visits and an exit survey of patients. The results reveal that the overall prevalence of IPV in the family practice was high; 14.6% in the pencil and paper survey and 13.7% in the RCT study. The RCT demonstrated that, compared to standard medical care, the computer-assisted screening resulted in a 1.8-fold increase in the likelihood of physician and patients discussing IPV risk and the detection of women at risk of IPV increased by a factor of 2.5-fold. Further, RCT participant patients showed acceptance of the computer-assisted screening, after its use. The interviewed physicians perceived computer-assisted screening as most feasible for periodic health exams and follow-up visits, given the existing logistical limitations. Overall, physicians expressed general acceptance of the computer screening. The results provide impetus for improvements in clinical practice, medical training, policy and research to address the issue of IPV. The use of the screening tool may be enhanced by continued research into its generalizability by inclusion of multiple family practice clinics and various primary care settings. The overall aim of the dissertation research was to advance knowledge on the phenomenon of computer-assisted screening for intimate partner violence (IPV) within a Canadian family practice context. A series of inter-linked studies (quantitative and qualitative) was conducted to answer three research questions: (1) what is the effectiveness of computer-assisted screening for increasing physician-patient discussions on and detection of IPV risk? (2) what is the acceptance of computer-assisted screening among patients? and (3) what is the feasibility of computer-assisted screening from the perspectives of family physicians? To answer the first two questions, a randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted at an academically-affiliated family practice clinic in Toronto with adult female patients in a current or recent intimate relationship (n = 314). The RCT planning was facilitated by studies in the pre-trial phase (a pencil and paper survey of patients, and a psychometric scale validation). To answer the third question, in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with the trial physicians (n = 10).

With more than 1 million cases reported each year, this pervasive social problem has devastating effects on victims, families, and communities. Prevention of Intimate Partner Violence presents a comprehensive overview of the wide range of efforts and approaches that have been successful in preventing physical, emotional, and verbal abuse. A growing frustration with the limits of therapeutic intervention and with the costs imposed on society by intimate partner violence has created a need for greater emphasis on state-of-the-art prevention programs that really work. Prevention of Intimate Partner Violence addresses the challenges of conducting and evaluating such programs, gaps that exist in programming and research, and future trends in those areas. A panel of domestic violence experts, researchers, and healthcare professionals examines how to change the ways individuals and the current health care system think about, and respond to, intimate partner violence; how to change the ways young people deal with anger in intimate relationships; and the ways society can support families to reduce the occurrence of violence in intimate relationships. Prevention of Intimate Partner Violence examines: identifying risk factors the cost-benefit of universal and targeted programs the effectiveness of parenting, stress management, and substance abuse programs community capacity theory community development social networks media and public awareness campaigns healthcare screening programs and much more Prevention of Intimate Partner Violence documents the effectiveness of prevention interventions, encouraging prevention specialists to use evidence-based interventions to enhance the effectiveness of their own work. Book Synopsis Responding to Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Violence Against Women by : World Health Organization
Download or read book Responding to Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Violence Against Women written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2013 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A health-care provider is likely to be the first professional contact for survivors of intimate partner violence or sexual assault. Evidence suggests that women who have been subjected to violence seek health care more often than non-abused women, even if they do not disclose the associated violence. They also identify health-care providers as the professionals they would most trust with disclosure of abuse. These guidelines are an unprecedented effort to equip healthcare providers with evidence-based guidance as to how to respond to intimate partner violence and sexual violence against women. They also provide advice for policy makers, encouraging better coordination and funding of services, and greater attention to responding to sexual violence and partner violence within training programmes for health care providers. The guidelines are based on systematic reviews of the evidence, and cover: 1. identification and clinical care for intimate partner violence 2. clinical care for sexual assault 3. training relating to intimate partner violence and sexual assault against women 4. policy and programmatic approaches to delivering services 5. mandatory reporting of intimate partner violence. The guidelines aim to raise awareness of violence against women among health-care providers and policy-makers, so that they better understand the need for an appropriate health-sector response. They provide standards that can form the basis for national guidelines, and for integrating these issues into health-care provider education.

Book Synopsis Confronting Chronic Neglect by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Confronting Chronic Neglect written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-05-04 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As many as 20 to 25 percent of American adultsâ€"or one in every four peopleâ€"have been victimized by, witnesses of, or perpetrators of family violence in their lifetimes. Family violence affects more people than cancer, yet it's an issue that receives far less attention. Surprisingly, many assume that health professionals are deliberately turning a blind eye to this traumatic social problem. The fact is, very little is being done to educate health professionals about family violence. Health professionals are often the first to encounter victims of abuse and neglect, and therefore they play a critical role in ensuring that victimsâ€"as well as perpetratorsâ€"get the help they need. Yet, despite their critical role, studies continue to describe a lack of education for health professionals about how to identify and treat family violence. And those that have been trained often say that, despite their education, they feel ill-equipped or lack support from by their employers to deal with a family violence victim, sometimes resulting in a failure to screen for abuse during a clinical encounter. Equally problematic, the few curricula in existence often lack systematic and rigorous evaluation. This makes it difficult to say whether or not the existing curricula even works. Confronting Chronic Neglect offers recommendations, such as creating education and research centers, that would help raise awareness of the problem on all levels. In addition, it recommends ways to involve health care professionals in taking some responsibility for responding to this difficult and devastating issue. Perhaps even more importantly, Confronting Chronic Neglect encourages society as a whole to share responsibility. Health professionals alone cannot solve this complex problem. Responding to victims of family violence and ultimately preventing its occurrence is a societal responsibility
Book Synopsis Screening for Family and Intimate Partner Violence by : Heidi D. Nelson
Download or read book Screening for Family and Intimate Partner Violence written by Heidi D. Nelson and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CONTEXT: Family and intimate partner violence occurs commonly in the U.S. and causes important health problems. Although the clinician's role in identification and intervention is considered a professional and legal responsibility, the effectiveness of these efforts is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine evidence on the performance of screening procedures and interventions in the primary care setting in reducing harm from family and intimate partner violence for children, women, and elderly adults. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE(r), PsycINFO, CINAHL, Health & Psychosocial Instruments, ERIC, AARP Ageline, and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, reference lists of systematic reviews, and experts. STUDY SELECTION: Included studies had English-language abstracts, were applicable to U.S. clinical practice, described abuse and neglect in women, children, or elderly adults, were conducted in or linked to primary care, obstetrics/gynecology, or emergency department settings, and included a clinician in the process of assessment or intervention. DATA EXTRACTION: We extracted selected information about study design, patient samples and settings, methods of assessment or intervention, and clinical endpointsand applied a set of criteria to evaluate study quality. DATA SYNTHESIS: No studies directly addressed the effectiveness of screening in a healthcare setting in reducing harm, or described the adverse effects of screening and interventions. All instruments designed to screen for child abuse and neglect were directed to parents, particularly pregnant women. These had fairly high sensitivity but low specificity. Several brief instruments designed to identify women with intimate partner violence compared well to longer previously validated instruments. We found few studies of screening for elder abuse and neglect. A randomized controlled trial with 15-years follow-up indicated that nurse home visits during pregnancy and for 2-years postpartum for low-income women improved abuse and neglect outcomes for children. Studies of interventions for children of other ages, women who are not pregnant, and elderly adults are lacking. CONCLUSIONS: Screening and interventions for child abuse are directed to parents during prenatal and postpartum periods. Several brief screening instruments have been tested for women, but interventions are lacking. Few instruments and no interventions were identified for elderly adults.

Book Synopsis Intimate Partner Violence Prevention and Intervention by : Anna C. Baldry
Download or read book Intimate Partner Violence Prevention and Intervention written by Anna C. Baldry and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the importance of assessing risk in domestic violence cases to prevent and reduce its escalation into homicide (so called uxoricide). Spousal killers in a substantial number of cases exhibit a history of prior spousal violence: in addition to this, witnessing violence has debilitating effects on children. For this reason domestic violence is also becoming a hot political issue on the European agenda. Integrating the US and Canadian experiences with the European ones increases the book's value and broadens perspectives. Assessing the risk and adopting appropriate measures can help reduce the risk of escalation of violence. It aims at gathering contributions from experts in the field of domestic violence and victimisation to present state of the art research in the risk assessment of domestic violence cases.
