Book excerpt: The purpose of the present study is to conduct an updated meta-analysis based on previous research (Hembree, 1990) but focused on interventions in K-12 school settings. We identified 11 articles between the years of 1990-2020 that met our inclusion criteria. From those articles, we calculated an omnibus effect size, tested homogeneity, evaluated publication bias, explored moderating variables, and assessed methodological rigor. Our Q statistic indicated homogeneity; however, the forest plot and I2 indicated a small amount of heterogeneity. The asymmetric shape of the funnel plot may be indicative of publication bias. The omnibus effect size was g = 0.316. The results of our moderator analysis indicated that math anxiety interventions produce the best results when conducted in targeted small groups. Additionally, three studies were considered methodologically sound. Our findings support the use of school-based interventions to reduce math anxiety, especially when those interventions are implemented as a targeted, small group intervention.

Book excerpt: Feelings of apprehension and fear brought on by mathematical performance can affect correct mathematical application and can influence the achievement and future paths of individuals affected by it. In recent years, mathematics anxiety has become a subject of increasing interest both in educational and clinical settings. This ground-breaking collection presents theoretical, educational and psychophysiological perspectives on the widespread phenomenon of mathematics anxiety. Featuring contributions from leading international researchers, Mathematics Anxiety challenges preconceptions and clarifies several crucial areas of research, such as the distinction between mathematics anxiety from other forms of anxiety (i.e., general or test anxiety); the ways in which mathematics anxiety has been assessed (e.g. throughout self-report questionnaires or psychophysiological measures); the need to clarify the direction of the relationship between math anxiety and mathematics achievement (which causes which). Offering a revaluation of the negative connotations usually associated with mathematics anxiety and prompting avenues for future research, this book will be invaluable to academics and students in the field psychological and educational sciences, as well as teachers working with students who are struggling with mathematics anxiety

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Math anxiety is, nowadays, a well-known phenomenon. This book contains the observations, research, and experiments of a concerned math teacher who, for over three decades, worked with students experiencing math anxiety. The book contains discussions and views by experts about math anxiety, causes of math anxiety, types of math anxiety, and various teaching strategies. We have included a careful study of some rough spots of math and how to make them easy and understandable to students. The book also contains selected examples of cases and how we tried to help the afflicted person. Through these examples, we have tried to reveal the nature of the problem and practical ways to solve them. To make the text lively and interesting, we have included opinion and reactions of the students, in their own words, to our approach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bedtime Math wants to change the way we introduce math to children: to make math a fun part of kids' everyday lives. We all know it's wonderful to read bedtime stories to kids, but what about doing math? Many generations of Americans are uncomfortable with math and numbers, and too often we hear the phrase, "I'm just not good at math!" For decades, this attitude has trickled down from parents to their kids, and we now have a culture that finds math dry, intimidating, and just not cool. Bedtime Math wants to change all that. Inside this book, families will find fun, mischief-making math problems to tackle—math that isn't just kid-friendly, but actually kid-appealing. With over 100 math riddles on topics from jalapeños and submarines to roller coasters and flamingos, this book bursts with math that looks nothing like school. And with three different levels of challenge (wee ones, little kids, and big kids), there's something for everyone. We can make numbers fun, and change the world, one Bedtime Math puzzle at a time.

Book excerpt: Math anxiety is a common disorder that students can develop throughout their time in mathematics classes. The disorder presents itself with both physical and psychological symptoms and can lead to several adverse results including failure of mathematics courses. This study focuses on using student empowerment to reduce the levels of math anxiety of students in my classroom. Initial surveys and interviews focused on revealing patterns of negative experiences in the students' math histories and how these experiences helped to shape their present levels of math anxiety. The study then used the Math Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) to evaluate the existing levels of math anxiety of students. Through discussions about the causes and symptoms of their anxiety as well as the presentation of researched methods to reduce math anxiety. Students learned more about their disorder as well as gained information on how to conquer it. Ultimately, through the implementation of the interventions the class was able to significantly reduce their levels of math anxiety associated with a majority of the topics assessed on the MARS.

Book excerpt: Finding an inexpensive, timely, and effective intervention to reduce math anxiety in community college students is a worthwhile endeavor. Math anxiety left unattended can lead to the conscious and deliberate avoidance of math-heavy educational programs and careers. Previous investigations in math anxiety interventions have overlooked the potential for mastery learning-based online modules to reduce math anxiety. The purpose of this two-factor quasi-experimental posttest-only control group study is to investigate whether participation in Let’s Go Racing, a mastery learning-inspired intervention designed to prepare students for gateway math courses, affects math anxiety levels and whether the potential effect differs for male and female students. This study also seeks to determine if Strawderman’s Math Anxiety Model and the reciprocal theory, both supporting the notion that student math success and math anxiety are inversely and bidirectionally associated, are plausible explanations of the phenomenon. A treatment group of Math 171 – Precalculus Algebra students at a small North Carolina community college was given the Math Anxiety Scale-Revised after completing Let’s Go Racing, while a control group of Math 171 students from another North Carolina community college completed only the Math Anxiety Scale-Revised assessment. Data were collected electronically and analyzed using two-way ANOVA statistical analyses. Results support the notion that female college students experience higher math anxiety levels than their male counterparts. However, the impact of Let’s Go Racing on math anxiety was inconclusive. The resulting recommendations are to replicate this study with a larger sample size and to investigate the effects of the Let’s Go Racing math intervention in other math courses and with younger students.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the effectiveness of measuring math-anxiety in elementary school students using real-time facial expression software (emotient) and self-reported Math anxiety using the Achievement Emotions Questionnaire- Elementary Students (AEQ-ES). Students aged 11-14 were asked to complete the AEQ-ES. Students were then given 5 standardized math questions taken from the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) and asked to rate how difficult they found each question (1-4). It was hypothesized that math anxiety would be related to difficulty ratings of math questions and performance on the math task, while parent ratings of their child's math abilities was expected to affect the development of child's math anxiety and math performance. This study will inform research on development of math anxiety and possible areas for intervention.
