Captain Dennis Masilleo has been in command of the IERS Monitor for eight years. The former captain of the Monitor, Zeta Smith, is now a Huzlorian count and is the ruler of the city of Dublesh on the planet Huzlor. But from the darkest reaches of space, a group of enemies is about to strike, and peace for Masilleo, Smith, and the rest of humanity is about to be shattered. Evil is on the move, and it is bringing death and destruction to the worlds of the Interstellar Earth Republic and into the lives of the crew of the Monitor. The greatest danger Earth has ever faced is about to be unleashed, and a war of unbelievable magnitude will spread across the known galaxy. The crew of the Monitor will be tested like they never have been before, and everything they hold dear will be shaken to its foundation. Even if they are successful in defeating this evil, they will still have to face an even greater opponent who is lurking in the shadows close to home. It will be as if the universe itself has turned on humanity, and many people will be considered to be among the forsaken multitude. This is the fourth book in the Interstellar Monitor series.
Book Synopsis Communication with Extraterrestrial Intelligence by : John Billingham
Download or read book Communication with Extraterrestrial Intelligence written by John Billingham and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication with Extraterrestrial Intelligence is devoted to the concepts and studies related to the science, technology, and observational techniques of communication with extraterrestrial intelligence (CETI). Topics covered range from the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) to the theory of interstellar communication; the problem of the origin of life; radio signals from extraterrestrial civilizations; and interstellar communication by neutrino beams. An infinitely expandable space radiotelescope is also described. This book is comprised of 21 chapters and opens with a discussion on the CETI activities of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) from 1965 to 1976 and describes the outlook for the IAA CETI Standing Committee. The following chapters sketch the background and rationale for a SETI program; the significance of the detection of signals and of information that may be contained in signals from extraterrestrial civilizations; an extended Drake's equation, the longevity-separation relation, equilibrium, inhomogeneities, and chain formation; and the physical and psychological basis for the belief that a band of frequencies called the water hole is a prime band for SETI. This monograph will appeal to practitioners in the fields of astrophysics, astronomy, planetary formation, exobiology, and biological evolution.

Book Synopsis After Kubrick by : Jeremi Szaniawski
Download or read book After Kubrick written by Jeremi Szaniawski and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking at its starting point the idea that Kubrick's cinema has constituted an intellectual, cerebral, and philosophical maze in which many filmmakers (as well as thinkers and a substantial fringe of the general public) have gotten lost at one point or another, this collection looks at the legacy of Kubrick's films in the 21st century. The main avenues investigated are as follows: a look at Kubrick's influence on his most illustrious followers (Paul Thomas Anderson, the Coen Brothers, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott, and Lars von Trier, to name a few); Kubrick in critical reception; Kubrick in stylistic (camera movements, set designs, music), thematic (artificial intelligence, new frontiers- large and small), aesthetic (the question of genre, pastiche, stereoscopy) and political terms (paranoia, democracy and secret societies, conspiracy theories). The contributions coalesce around the concept of a Kubrickian substrate, rich and complex, which permeates our Western cultural landscape very much to this day, informing and sometimes announcing/reflecting it in twisted ways, 21 years after the director's death.

Book Synopsis The Outer Heliosphere: The Next Frontiers by : E. Marsch
Download or read book The Outer Heliosphere: The Next Frontiers written by E. Marsch and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-09-19 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eleventh COSPAR colloquium The Outer Heliosphere: The Next Frontiers was held in Potsdam, Germany, from 24-28 July, 2000, and is the second dedicated to this subject after the first one held in Warsaw, Poland in 1989.Roughly a century has passed after the first ideas by Oliver Lodge, George Francis Fitzgerald and Kristan Birkeland about particle clouds emanating from the Sun and interacting with the Earth environment. Only a few decades after the formulation of the concepts of a continuous solar corpuscular radiation by Ludwig Bierman and a solar wind by Eugene Parker, heliospheric physics has evolved into an important branch of astrophysical research. Numerous spacecraft missions have increased the knowledge about the heliosphere tremendously. Now, at the beginning of a new millenium it seems possible, by newly developed propulasion technologies to send a spacecraft beyond the boundaries of the heliosphere. Such an Interstellar Proce will start the in-situ exploration of interstellar space and, thus, can be considered as the first true astrophysical spacecraft. The year 2000 appeared to be a highly welcome occassion to review the achievements since the last COSPAR Colloquia 11 years ago, to summarize the present developments and to give new impulse for future activities in heliospheric research.
