Book excerpt: Regardless of military occupational specialty or pay grade, every Marine must be fully prepared to perform as a rifleman in a combat situation. This thesis studied three critical parameters which significantly influence the effectiveness of the individual combat skills training which every rifleman should receive. This type of training must replicate as closely as practicable the actual environmental and physical parameters expected to be encountered in a combat, or other "real world," situation. The closer the leader comes to creating these conditions, the more realistic his training is said to be. Realism is enhanced the more it involves the actual stresses and fears of the modern battlefield. Statutory safety rules and policies also play an important role in the mind of the leader as he attempts to develop and execute realistic training. The interdependence of these three elements requires the Marine Corps leader to harmonize their influence for maximum effectiveness. It is also his challenge to carefully weigh and balance the risks associated with making his unit's training more realistic. The author's study is apparently the first of its kind on this specific subject. His methodological approach to research included a review of all the existing documentary materials which established current training philosophy or policy, an analysis of the results of a survey sent to contemporary Marine Corps combat veterans, and a synopsis of interviews conducted with several international officers resident at the 1991 U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. Conclusions derived from this study were done on a Corps-wide basis. That is, qualitative analytical judgments were made for the average unit or school conducting routine combat skills training. In the author's opinion, training is not being conducted as realistically as it could be, the causes and countermeasures for battlefield stress are not being formally instructed, and existing safety policies are often unneces.

Book excerpt: This manual provides guidance for the organization, planning, and conduct of the full range of military operations on urbanized terrain. This publication was prepared primarily for commanders, staffs, and subordinate leaders down to the squad and fire team level. It is written from a Marine air-ground task force perspective, with emphasis on the ground combat element as the most likely supported element in that environment. It provides the level of detailed information that supports the complexities of planning, preparing for, and executing small-unit combat operations on urbanized terrain. It also provides historical and environmental information that supports planning and training for combat in built-up areas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In much of the discourse on stress, distress and resilience (SDR) in the US Marine Corps there is the recognition that the social somehow plays a role in the development of stress and distress. However, these arguments are most often grounded in the same fundamental and largely unchallenged assumption that stress and distress are essentially the result of brain functions. Even in the literature that focuses on the social implications of combat, stress and distress are most often conceived as traumatic damage to the psychology and mind of soldiers, and not as personal and socio-cultural constructions of a way of being. In a strong departure from the conventional discourse, Tortorello argues that such a reductive, neuroscientific approach to understanding SDR in the US Marine Corps fails both scientifically and ethically. Incorporating data from his ethnographic study of culture in the US Marine Corps, Tortorello proposes an agentic, socio-cultural approach that reconceptualises SDR as a way of being, wherein persons generate their own SDR through social and cultural mechanisms, rather than SDR presenting as the results of malfunctioning cognitive processes. This book will be of interest to scholars of medical and psychological anthropology, military studies, and American studies.

Book excerpt: Marine Corps Techniques Publication MCTP 3-30E (Formerly MCRP 6-11C) NTTP 1-15M Combat and Operational Stress Control 2 May 2016 During times of conflict, Navy and Marine Corps leaders are constantly reminded of their duty to lead with military proficiency and to take care of their Marines and Sailors. Ensuring the wellbeing of Marines and Sailors includes not only strengthening them, but also keeping them strong, monitoring their condition, applying first aid when they are injured, and returning them to full fitness as soon as possible. However, there is much more to caring for our Marines and Sailors than their physical health. Caring for their psychological health is just as crucial. Preserving the psychological health of Service members and their families is as much a warfighting issue as it is a sacred duty and it is of paramount concern to mission readiness. Leaders in both the Navy and the Marine Corps should use this reference as a tool for teaching and for professional discussion about combat and operational stress control. While we hone technical and physical skills to make us successful in combat and other operations, we cannot neglect the mind and spirit. Marine Corps Techniques Publication MCTP 3-30E (Formerly MCRP 6-11C) NTTP 1-15M Combat and Operational Stress Control 2 May 2016, is not intended to be clinical in nature; rather, it focuses on the leadership responsibilities involved with preserving psychological health in Service members. It provides a foundation so leaders can understand the value of recognizing and addressing combat and operational stress issues and why this skill is so important to the well-being of Marines and Sailors. The effects of appropriate stress treatment reach not only before, during, and after combat and other operations, but also throughout the careers of Marines and Sailors and after their separation from the military. Read this publication. Apply it in your command. It is an important tool to help us strive for a stronger force in the short run and a healthier society in the future. This publication supersedes MCRP 6-11C and NTTP 1-15M, Combat Stress, dated 23 Jun 2000.

Book excerpt: In conventional warfare, support forces (SF) such as military police, engineers, and medical personnel normally operate behind the front lines of a battlefield. But in Iraq and Afghanistan -- both in U.S. Central Command's (CENTCOM) area of responsibility -- there is no clear distinction between front lines and rear areas, and SF are sometimes exposed to hostile fire without help from combat arms units. This report on combat skills training for SF assessed the extent to which: (1) Army and Marine Corps SF are completing required combat skills training; (2) the services and CENTCOM have information to validate completion of required training; and (3) the services have used lessons learned to adjust combat skills training for SF. Book excerpt: "The Army and Marine Corps both consider Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) to be a central part of future training and together have a joint MOUT Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) underway. Training facilities for military and law enforcement agencies include firing ranges, mock towns or villages, and shoot houses. Makeshift facilities for dry fire drills include engineer tape staked out on the ground and rooms in any building available. Training in Close Quarter Combat (CQC) is offered in Army and Marine Corps training courses. Training time was mostly allocated to live fire and live simulation. Team dry fire drills were often extensively practiced before team live fire, but considered as a part of the safety training required as a part of live firing. Before team live fire training, Army units usually conduct individual marksmanship training. In many cases, standards were set for individual qualification before soldiers could participate in team live fire. Live simulation was both with the multiple integrated laser engagement system (MILES) and Simunition. Law enforcement agencies (including Military Police) and Marines were more likely to use Simunition. Those using Simunition who also had experience with MILES preferred Simunition for live simulation training."--DITC.

Book excerpt: He Marine Corps Operational Stress Control and Readiness (OSCAR) program embeds mental health personnel within Marine Corps units and extends their reach by training officers and noncommissioned officers to recognize Marines showing signs of stress and intervene early. RAND Corporation researchers conducted an outcome evaluation of the OSCAR program that included four components: (1) a quasi-experimental study that compared Marines in OSCAR-trained and non-OSCAR-trained battalions on a wide array of stress-related outcomes before and after deployment, (2) a longitudinal pre- and postdeployment survey of perceptions of OSCAR among Marines who attended OSCAR training, (3) focus groups with Marines, and (4) semistructured interviews with commanding officers of battalions that had received OSCAR training. Results indicated that, after the authors adjust for a wide array of baseline characteristics and deployment experiences, Marines in OSCAR-trained battalions were more likely than those in non-OSCAR-trained battalions to report having sought help with stress problems from a peer, leader, or corpsman - behavior that is consistent with OSCAR goals. In addition, Marines considered OSCAR a valuable tool for enhancing combat and operational stress response and recovery efforts in the Marine Corps. However, this evaluation did not find evidence that OSCAR affected the key mental health outcomes it was designed to address. Thus, the results of this evaluation do not support the continuation of OSCAR in its current form. Based on lessons learned about OSCAR from this evaluation, other research, and best practices for program improvement and implementation, recommendations for improving combat and operational stress training in the Marine Corps are offered.
