Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 23 December 1988, the barge Nestucca was damaged off Gray's Harbour, Washington and 875,000 litres of Bunker C oil was spilled. The spill drifted northward, passing through concentrations of seabirds off Washington and Vancouver Island, resulting in a direct mortality of an estimated 56,000 birds. Many more were debilitated and perhaps died from side effects. This report attempts to explain the very high mortality rate of the seabirds, much higher relative to other spills of similar size. It reviews pertinent information on seabird distribution and behaviour and physical and biological oceanography from published and unpublished sources. The review identifies oceanic processes that might affect the distribution and abundance of seabirds in the region and focuses on ocean processes affecting overwintering seabirds, especially the two most affected species, the Common Mure and Cassin's Auklet.

Book Synopsis Effects of the Nestucca Oil Spill on Seabirds Along the Coast of Vancouver Island in 1989 by : Alan E. Burger
Download or read book Effects of the Nestucca Oil Spill on Seabirds Along the Coast of Vancouver Island in 1989 written by Alan E. Burger and published by Delta, B.C. : Canadian Wildlife Service. This book was released on 1993 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 23 December 1988, the oil barge Nestucca was damaged off Gray's Harbour, Washington and began leaking, spilling about 875,000 litres of Bunker C oil that drifted northwards, leading to widespread oiling of beaches along the coasts of Washington and Vancouver Island and the heavy mortality of seabirds. This report documents the impact of the Nestucca spill on seabirds based on the data collected from British Columbia. The report documented the numbers, types, degree of oiling, and state of decomposition of the birds recovered on Vancouver Island; compared the species composition of the oiled birds with that of offshore and inshore populations wintering off southwest Vancouver Island; estimated the total number of oiled birds to land on Vancouver Island, taking into account the large numbers of carcasses not tallied; estimated the total at-sea mortality represented by the birds recovered on Vancouver Island, taking into account the losses of carcasses at sea; compared the Nestucca victims with normal seabird mortality off Vancouver Island; and assessed the impact of the spill on predatory and scavenging birds on Vancouver Island.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This literature review covers the effects of spilled oil (crude & refined) and offshore petroleum development applicable to Canadian cold-water ocean species, ecosystems, and resources. The review begins with generalizations concerning spilled oil impact and then focusses on marine ecosystems & organism groups relevant to the cold ocean waters of Canada's distinct National Marine Conservation Areas Natural Regions. Topics covered include the conditions affecting oil impacts, the role of biology in spill preparedness & response, the effect of cold climates & sea ice on oil spill behaviour, oil effects on habitat, sublethal effects of oil, biodegradation of oil, and effects of oil spills on marine plants & associated communities, wetlands, invertebrates, fish, fisheries, sea birds, marine mammals, and cultural resources.

This book was released on 1991 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crude oil that spilled from the Exxon Valdez spread to more than 1,200 miles of Alaska coastline, including portions of national forests, parks, and wildlife refuges managed by the federal government. This coastline is rich in fish and wildlife, such as herring, salmon, sea otters, whales, bald eagles, and seabirds, and the spill killed large numbers of many wildlife species. Among the most conspicuous effects of the spill was the injury to sea- birds. Seabirds are vulnerable to oil spills because they spend much of their time foraging on the sea's surface. When their plumage comes in contact with the oil, it loses buoyancy, causing many birds to drown. Birds that manage to avoid drowning may die from exposure (oiled feathers provide poor insulation) or from ingesting oil that they try to preen from their plumage. Following the oil spill, more than 36,000 dead seabirds were recovered, frozen, and kept in storage as evidence of the effects of the spill. According to federal officials, these dead birds probably represented only a small portion of the number actually killed. Other birds were thought to have sunk, decomposed, been scavenged by other animals, or in some other way become unrecoverable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study addresses the concern that seabird populations in the Gulf of Alaska would not recover favorably following the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Relationships were examined between oceanography, forage fish, and seabirds near three seabird colonies in lower Cook Inlet from 1995 to 1999 (some colony work continued until 2001).
