Book excerpt: Packed bed columns are largely employed for absorption, desorption, rectification and direct heat transfer processes in chemical and food industry, environmental protection and also processes in thermal power stations like water purification, flue gas heat utilization and SO2 removal. These Separation processes, are estimated to account for 40%-70% of capital and operating costs in process industry. Packed bed columns are widely employed in this area. Their usage also for direct heat transfer between gas and liquid, enlarge their importance. They are the best apparatuses, from thermodynamical point of view, for mass and heat transfer processes between gas and liquid phase. Their wide spreading is due to low capital investments and operating costs. Since 1995 there has not been published a specialised book in this area, and this is a period of quick development of packed columns. Packed Bed Columns reflects the state of this field including the author's experience on creating and investigating of new packings, column internals and industrial columns. - Considers the theories of mass transfer processes and shows how they help the construction of highly effective packings - Complete information about the performance characteristics of different modern types of highly effective packings - Considers the models for calculation and areas of their application

Book excerpt: Mass Transfer and Absorbers deals with absorption and mass transfer processes and the factors to consider in designing absorbers. Calculations are supported by a uniform, generalized process driving force, complying with Maxwell's equation, and the coefficients are made as independent as possible in terms of the kind of diffusion and of the values of the concentrations. This volume is comprised of seven chapters and begins with an overview of the general principles of diffusional mass transfer, absorption and stripping, and equilibrium between gas and liquid phases. Steady-state mass transfer by diffusion is then discussed, along with mass transfer in a single phase (forced flow and unforced flow). Subsequent chapters explore design considerations for mass transfer equipment and related problems; adsorption accompanied by a chemical reaction; and problems relating to hydrodynamics. The final chapter is devoted to some practical issues, including economic flow velocity and mechanical features of packed, plate, and spray tower designs. This book is intended for practicing designers and engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an easy-to-understand introduction to the computational mass transfer (CMT) method. On the basis of the contents of the first edition, this new edition is characterized by the following additional materials. It describes the successful application of this method to the simulation of the mass transfer process in a fluidized bed, as well as recent investigations and computing methods for predictions for the multi-component mass transfer process. It also demonstrates the general issues concerning computational methods for simulating the mass transfer of the rising bubble process. This new edition has been reorganized by moving the preparatory materials for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computational Heat Transfer into appendices, additions of new chapters, and including three new appendices on, respectively, generalized representation of the two-equation model for the CMT, derivation of the equilibrium distribution function in the lattice-Boltzmann method, and derivation of the Navier-Stokes equation using the lattice-Boltzmann model. This book is a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students in the fields of computational methodologies for the numerical simulation of fluid dynamics, mass and/or heat transfer involved in separation processes (distillation, absorption, extraction, adsorption etc.), chemical/biochemical reactions, and other related processes.

Book excerpt: "A steady state approach was followed in this investigation to determine the effects of liquid and gas flow rates, packing size and packing height on the interphase mass transfer coefficient and gas phase axial mixing Peclet numbers. Experiments were performed on the absorption of carbon dioxide from a mixture of carbon dioxide and nitrogen in a packed column. Absorption was performed using 1/4, 3/8 and l/2 inch Raschig rings, with a packing height of 3 feet and also using 3/8 inch Raschig rings with a packing height of 5 feet. The liquid and gas flow ranges used were 2865 to 5680 lb./hr.sq.ft. and 5.0 to 7.4 lb./hr.sq.ft., respectively. Three mathematical models, viz. (i) plug flow in both the gas and liquid phases, (ii) axial mixing in gas phase and plug flow in liquid phase, and (iii) axial mixing in both gas and liquid phases, were used. It is found that axial mixing in the gas phase increases with increases in liquid flow rate, packing size and packing height. The behavior of apparent and true mass transfer coefficients indicates a decrease in axial mixing with increases in gas flow rates. However, axial mixing is found to be small under the experimental conditions used in this investigation. The gas phase Peclet numbers obtained in this investigation are about fifty times greater than reported by workers using a transient technique under the same conditions. Correlations for the apparent and true over-all liquid phase mass transfer coefficients are also presented"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Book excerpt: The available experimental data on effective interfacial area and mass transfer coefficients in irrigated packed towers, has been analysed in a systematic manner for the cases of physical absorption and absorption with chemical reaction. Generalised correlations are developed for effective interfacial area, liquid phase and gas phase mass transfer coefficients. Further an attempt has also been made to elucidate the mechanism of mass transfer. It is expected that the correlations developed in this investigation could be utilised conveniently for designing packed absorption towers. [Authors' abstract].

Book excerpt: The phenomenon of "mass transfer with chemical reaction" takes place whenever one phase is brought into contact with one or more other phases not in chemical equilibrium with it. This phenomenon has industrial, biological and physiological importance. In chemical process engineering, it is encountered in both separ ation processes and reaction engineering. In some cases, a chemical reaction may deliberately be employed for speeding up the rate of mass transfer and/or for increasing the capacity of the solvent; in other cases the multiphase reaction system is a part of the process with the specific aim of product formation. Finally, in some cases, for instance "distillation with chemical reaction", both objectives are involved. Although the subject is clearly a chemical engineering undertakin~, it requires often a good understanding of other subjects, such as chemistry and fluid mechanics etc., leading to publications in diversified areas. On the other har.d, the subject has always been a major field and one of the most fruitful for chemical engineers.
