Book excerpt: For firms acting in technological niches the expansion into foreign markets can be a way to increase sales and to thus to recover initial sunk costs over a shorter time frame. Our research, based on survey data for nearly 600 British and German high-tech start-ups, examines whether internationalisation leads to faster growth among high-tech start-ups. Results show that firms with international sales have higher sales growth than firms that sell only domestically. We find that technological sophistication of products and the experience of entrepreneurs has a positive impact on growth. In addition, intense competition and shorter windows of opportunity increase the pressure to grow rapidly to appropriate the returns from innovation. The findings suggest that high tech firm founders should be more determinedly international in their vision and strategies from the very start of their business to increase the economic success of their efforts.

Book excerpt: There is now a certain tradition of Anglo-German comparative research on new technology-based firms (NTBFs). Two of the most influential studies in this area have both been sponsored by the Anglo-German Foundation for the Study of In dustrial Society (AGF). Starting in 1977, the first AGF project on NTBFs, which was carried out by the consultancy firm Arthur D. Little, has been one ofthe most important early contributions in this field (Little 1977). This report was the first public document to use the term 'new technology-based firm' and to provide a definition, which despite its operational limitations subsequently became an es tablished term in the literature. More importantly, this study represented one ofthe first serious attempts to survey the existing stock of this type of firm. The report was critical of the contemporary situation in Europe. (This is a policy area which continues to be hotly debated, see European Commission 1995, Bank of England 1996 and HM Treasury 1998. ) It emphasised that, in comparison with the USA, Germany and the UK were each lagging behind if judged by the rate of formation of NTBFs and in their total contribution to the overall economic activity of both countries. In terms of a policy contribution, this study was instrumental in high lighting the lack ofsupport infrastructures for the genesis and growth of high-tech start-ups in two of Europe's leading economies.

Book excerpt: The present study analyses the international activities of British start-up companies in high-technology industries. The research makes the following contributions. First, it is the first study that establishes the prevalence of internationally operating start-up companies in a particular country. Accordingly, we find that the majority of British high-tech start-ups have engaged in international activities within a few years since formation. Second, it consolidates the existing knowledge in the fields of international entrepreneurship and subjects it to empirical testing. Third, it assesses the power of different theories in international business to explain the cross-border activities of start-up companies. Overall, the research lends support to a resource-based perspective of international entrepreneurship since the proxies for transaction cost-based arguments and the internationalisation process theory are of limited explanatory power.

Book excerpt: We examine the impact of technological product advantages, prior international experience of the management, firm size and age, country differences, and sunk costs as determinants of the timing of international market entry. The timing of internationalisation is analysed using 'event history analysis' for 600 British and German start-up companies in high-technology industries. The results indicate that the incidence of internationalization increases over time. For the majority of new firms the question is not whether the firm will internationalize but when. The analyses indicated that a high commitment to R&D fosters rapid internationalization. The involvement of founder managers who are internationally experienced increases the speed of foreign market activity. Working against rapid internationalization was a high level of product customization. The findings suggest that timing of internationalization is a dynamic process which is influenced by initial human capital endowment, technological advantages, and learning from of day to day activities.

Book excerpt: The topic of Entrepreneurial Finance involves many issues, including but not limited to the risks and returns to being an entrepreneur, financial contracting, business planning, capital gaps and the availability of capital, market booms and busts, public policy and international differences in entrepreneurial finance stemming from differences in laws, institutions and culture. As these issues are so extremely broad and complex, the academic and practitioner literature on topic usually focuses on at most one or two of these issues at one time. The Oxford Handbook of Entrepreneurial Finance provides a comprehensive picture of issues dealing with different sources of entrepreneurial finance and different issues with financing entrepreneurs. The Handbook comprises contributions from 48 authors based in 12 different countries. It is organized into seven parts, the first of which introduces the issues, explains the organization of the Handbook, and briefly summarizes the contributions made by the authors in each of the chapters. Part II covers the topics pertaining to financing new industries and the returns and risk to being an entrepreneur. Part III deals with entrepreneurial capital structure. Part IV discusses business planning, funding and funding gaps in entrepreneurial finance with a focus on credit markets. Part V provides analyses of the main alternative sources of entrepreneurial finance. Part VI considers issues in public policy towards entrepreneurial finance. Part VII considers international differences in entrepreneurial finance, including analyses of entrepreneurial finance in weak institutional environments as well as microfinance.

It introduces typologies of industrial policies and discusses the manufacturing sector and its evolving role in the region. Designing Integrated Industrial Policies examines the integration of SMEs in global value chains and provides macro-econometric and firm-based micro-econometric analyses of (de)industrialization. This book will be a very useful reference particularly as a how-to guide on industrial promotion and designing integrated industrial policies not only for economic growth and job creation but also for "inclusive" development. It presents country cases and illustrates useful tools for industrial policy simulation and for evidence-based policy making through these concrete examples.

Software business refers to commercial activity of the software industry, aimed at generating income from delivery of software products and software services. Although software business shares common features with other international knowledge-intensive businesses, it carries many inherent features making it an intriguing and challenging domain for research. Until now, however, software business has received little attention from the academic community. The First International Conference on Software Business (ICSOB 2010) was organized in Jyv ̈ askyl ̈ a during June 21–23, 2010. Book excerpt: Factors that influence the creation and developmentof innovative start-ups, particularly university-based start-ups, are examined.Previous research has found that reasons for creating academic spin-off firmsinclude perception of market opportunity, independence, presence of anentrepreneurial culture within the university, and the presence of varioustechnological and economic resources. In order to assess location factors and decisions for university spin-offcompanies, a survey was designed in the year 2000 which was given to more than1,000 university researchers from several technology regions worldwide. Resultsshow that foreign experience and use of the Internet information exchange iscommon for a large number of university researchers in successful technologyregions, and in particular for business founders and potential founders.Although such international activity among founders and the increase ofeconomic globalization might expand the location options for such start-ups, itis noted that researchers prefer to set up their businesses close to theoriginal research institution, where they have an established network. Why new knowledge-based firms might collaborate with foreign partners wasalso examined.Reasons include: (1) a transition toward the foreign marketwhen a degree of domestic market penetration is reached; (2) a prediction ofhigh transaction costs in high-technology industries; (3) a focus on thespecial resource requirements of new technology-based firms. A study on the importance of international business activities was conductedin June 2002 with 30 start-up companies from institutions in Jena, Ilmenau, andSchmalkalden, Germany. Results indicate that a majority of the firmsmaintain international contacts and the export of goods and services is themost vital activity. International and networking activities are important forthe success of a technology-based firm. (NEE).

It also provides a picture of the current patterns of internationalization of high-tech start-ups, through a map of the most attractive countries in terms of inbound and outbound internationalization flows. The empirical data have been obtained from a cross-country survey on internationalized high-tech start-ups operating in the ICT and electronics sectors. Results highlight that US, UK and China are the most competitive countries in terms of inbound flows. We obtain evidence that internationalization flows of high-tech start-ups are motivated by the sourcing of host-country locational advantages, identified by the strength of the legal and regulatory framework, the availability of venture capital financing, the innovation potential and the strength of IPR protection.

Even newly founded technology based firms (NTBFs) are often internationally active shortly after their inception ("born globals"). However, in order to create jobs and have a sustainable influence on (macro)economic development, continuous growth of NTBFs is needed and research must focus on the continuous role of internationalisation. Based on longitudinal data, this paper examines empirically the long-term internationalisation behaviour of German and British technology-oriented firms founded between 1987 and 1996. Applying logit models, I am able to identify firm-specific success factors that influence the probability of entry into and exit from the international market. The results show, for instance, that firms can overcome high entry costs by acquiring firm-specific assets. Similarly, firm-specific resources prevent high-tech companies from exiting the international market. The strategic role of investment in R&D is stressed in particular by the data.

Book excerpt: This book presents the findings of the extensive research progrannne funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Council) and entitled 'Technological Change and Regional Development in Europe'. The goal of this programme was to carry out research by means of empirical surveys into the relationship between technological change and regional development. Over a period of six years, a total of 50 research projects have been undertaken in three phases, each lasting two years. This research programme has succeeded in actively involving leading German regional scientists from many universities as well as non-university research institutions. In addition, numerous research projects were carried out in close co-operation with internationally renowned partners. We should like to express our gratitude for the support provided by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Without their financial backing of the research programme, it would not have been possible to undertake such an ambitious project. Thanks also go to the contributors of this volume for their willingness to participate in our joint project. We wish in addition to acknowledge the contribution of Prof. Dr. Philip Cooke whose refereeing of the chapters has enhanced the quality of the work presented here. Finally, our thanks go to Angela Spence for her expert editorial assistance, linguistic editing and the preparation of the Index, and also Franco Vaio for taking care of the technical aspects and production of the final copy. Their combined efforts have been crucial for successfully bringing together contributions from so many different authors in a single volume.
