Book excerpt: These are the proceedings of the First International Conference on Compu- tional Logic (CL 2000) which was held at Imperial College in London from 24th to 28th July, 2000. The theme of the conference covered all aspects of the theory, implementation, and application of computational logic, where computational logic is to be understood broadly as the use of logic in computer science. The conference was collocated with the following events: { 6th International Conference on Rules and Objects in Databases (DOOD 2000) { 10th International Workshop on Logic-based Program Synthesis and Tra- formation (LOPSTR 2000) { 10th International Conference on Inductive Logic Programming (ILP 2000). CL 2000 consisted of seven streams: { Program Development (LOPSTR 2000) { Logic Programming: Theory and Extensions { Constraints { Automated Deduction: Putting Theory into Practice { Knowledge Representation and Non-monotonic Reasoning { Database Systems (DOOD 2000) { Logic Programming: Implementations and Applications. The LOPSTR 2000 workshop constituted the program development stream and the DOOD 2000 conference constituted the database systems stream. Each stream had its own chair and program committee, which autonomously selected the papers in the area of the stream. Overall, 176 papers were submitted, of which 86 were selected to be presented at the conference and appear in these proceedings. The acceptance rate was uniform across the streams. In addition, LOPSTR 2000 accepted about 15 extended abstracts to be presented at the conference in the program development stream.

The symposium was thoughtfully planned, organized, and supported by the ISHPC Organizing C- mittee and its collaborating organizations. The ISHPC-V program included two keynote speeches, several invited talks, two panel discussions, and technical sessions covering theoretical and applied research topics in high–performance computing and representing both academia and industry. One of the regular sessions highlighted the research results of the ITBL project (IT–based research laboratory, http://www.itbl.riken.go.jp/). ITBL is a Japanese national project started in 2001 with the objective of re- izing a virtual joint research environment using information technology. ITBL aims to connect 100 supercomputers located in main Japanese scienti?c research laboratories via high–speed networks. A total of 58 technical contributions from 11 countries were submitted to ISHPC-V. Each paper received at least three peer reviews. After a thorough evaluation process, the program committee selected 14 regular (12-page) papers for presentation at the symposium. In addition, several other papers with fav- able reviews were recommended for a poster session presentation. They are also included in the proceedings as short (8-page) papers. Theprogramcommitteegaveadistinguishedpaperawardandabeststudent paper award to two of the regular papers. The distinguished paper award was given for “Code and Data Transformations for Improving Shared Cache P- formance on SMT Processors” by Dimitrios S. Nikolopoulos. Book Synopsis Hagenberg Research by : Bruno Buchberger
Download or read book Hagenberg Research written by Bruno Buchberger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-29 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BrunoBuchberger This book is a synopsis of basic and applied research done at the various re search institutions of the Softwarepark Hagenberg in Austria. Starting with 15 coworkers in my Research Institute for Symbolic Computation (RISC), I initiated the Softwarepark Hagenberg in 1987 on request of the Upper Aus trian Government with the objective of creating a scienti?c, technological, and economic impulse for the region and the international community. In the meantime, in a joint e?ort, the Softwarepark Hagenberg has grown to the current (2009) size of over 1000 R&D employees and 1300 students in six research institutions, 40 companies and 20 academic study programs on the bachelor, master’s and PhD level. The goal of the Softwarepark Hagenberg is innovation of economy in one of the most important current technologies: software. It is the message of this book that this can only be achieved and guaranteed long term by “watering the root”, namely emphasis on research, both basic and applied. In this book, we summarize what has been achieved in terms of research in the various research institutions in the Softwarepark Hagenberg and what research vision we have for the imminent future. When I founded the Softwarepark Hagenberg, in addition to the “watering the root” principle, I had the vision that such a technology park can only prosper if we realize the “magic triangle”, i.e. the close interaction of research, academic education, and business applications at one site, see Figure 1.
Book Synopsis Computer Algebra and Parallelism by : Richard E. Zippel
Download or read book Computer Algebra and Parallelism written by Richard E. Zippel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1992-03-25 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains papers presented at a workshop on the use of parallel techniques in symbolic and algebraic computation held at Cornell University in May 1990. The eight papers in the book fall into three groups. The first three papers discuss particular programming substrates for parallel symbolic computation, especially for distributed memory machines. The next three papers discuss novel ways of computing with elements of finite fields and with algebraic numbers. The finite field technique is especially interesting since it uses the Connection Machine, a SIMD machine, to achievesurprising amounts of parallelism. One of the parallel computing substrates is also used to implement a real root isolation technique. One of the crucial algorithms in modern algebraic computation is computing the standard, or Gr|bner, basis of an ideal. The final two papers discuss two different approaches to speeding their computation. One uses vector processing on the Cray and achieves significant speed-ups. The other uses a distributed memory multiprocessor and effectively explores the trade-offs involved with different interconnect topologies of the multiprocessors.

Download or read book Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages written by Gopal Gupta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-05-20 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Declarative languages have traditionally been regarded by the mainstream c- puting community as too impractical to be put to practical use. At the same time, traditionalconferencesdevotedto declarativelanguagesdo not haveissues related to practice as their central focus. Thus, there are few forums devoted to discussion of practical aspects and implications of newly discovered results and techniques related to declarative languages. The goal of the First International Workshop on Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages (PADL) is to bring together researchers, practitioners and implementors of declarative languages to discuss practical issues and practical implications of their research results. The workshop was held in San Antonio, Texas, during January 18-19, 1999. This volume contains its proceedings. Fifty three papers were submitted in response to the call for papers. These papers were written by authors belonging to twenty one countries from six c- tinents. Each paper was assigned to at least two referees for reviewing. Twenty four papers were nally selected for presentation at the workshop. Many good papers could not be included due to the limited duration of the workshop. The workshop included invited talks by Mark Hayden of DEC/Compaq Systems - search Center, speaking on \Experiences Building Distributed Systems in ML," and Mark Wallace of Imperial College Center for Planning And Resource C- trol (IC-PARC), speaking on \ECLiPSe: Declarative Specic ation and Scalable Implementation.

Book excerpt: This book addresses topics related to cloud and Big Data technologies, architecture and applications including distributed computing and data centers, cloud infrastructure and security, and end-user services. The majority of the book is devoted to the security aspects of cloud computing and Big Data. Cloud computing, which can be seen as any subscription-based or pay-per-use service that extends the Internet’s existing capabilities, has gained considerable attention from both academia and the IT industry as a new infrastructure requiring smaller investments in hardware platforms, staff training, or licensing software tools. It is a new paradigm that has ushered in a revolution in both data storage and computation. In parallel to this progress, Big Data technologies, which rely heavily on cloud computing platforms for both data storage and processing, have been developed and deployed at breathtaking speed. They are among the most frequently used technologies for developing applications and services in many fields, such as the web, health, and energy. Accordingly, cloud computing and Big Data technologies are two of the most central current and future research mainstreams. They involve and impact a host of fields, including business, scientific research, and public and private administration. Gathering extended versions of the best papers presented at the Third International Conference on Cloud Computing Technologies and Applications (CloudTech’17), this book offers a valuable resource for all Information System managers, researchers, students, developers, and policymakers involved in the technological and application aspects of cloud computing and Big Data.

Book Synopsis Computer Aided Systems Theory - EUROCAST 2001 by : Roberto Moreno-Diaz
Download or read book Computer Aided Systems Theory - EUROCAST 2001 written by Roberto Moreno-Diaz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-08-14 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of CAST as Computer Aided Systems Theory, was introduced by F. Pichler in the late 1980s to include those computer theoretical and practical developments as tools to solve problems in System Science. It was considered as the third component (the other two being CAD and CAM) necessary to build the path from Computer and Systems Sciences to practical developments in Science and Engineering. The University of Linz organized the first CAST workshop in April 1988, which demonstrated the acceptance of the concepts by the scientific and technical community. Next, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria joined the University of Linz to organize the first international meeting on CAST, (Las Palmas, February 1989), under the name EUROCAST’89. This was a very successful gathering of systems theorists, computer scientists, and engineers from most European countries, North America, and Japan. It was agreed that EUROCAST international conferences would be organized every two years, alternating between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and a continental European location. Thus, successive EUROCAST meetings have taken place in Krems (1991), Las Palmas (1993), Innsbruck (1995), Las Palmas (1997), and Vienna (1999), in addition to an extra-European CAST Conference in Ottawa in 1994.
