This book was released on 2006-09-14 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do states delegate certain tasks and responsibilities to international organizations rather than acting unilaterally or cooperating directly? Furthermore, to what extent do states continue to control IOs once authority has been delegated? Examining a variety of different institutions including the World Trade Organization, the United Nations and the European Commission, this book explores the different methods that states employ to ensure their interests are being served, and identifies the problems involved with monitoring and managing IOs. The contributors suggest that it is not inherently more difficult to design effective delegation mechanisms at international level than at domestic level and, drawing on principal-agent theory, help explain the variations that exist in the extent to which states are willing to delegate to IOs. They argue that IOs are neither all evil nor all virtuous, but are better understood as bureaucracies that can be controlled to varying degrees by their political masters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International organizations (IOs) are essential and controversial actors in world politics today. They work on just about every imaginable issue that states cannot easily address individually. This timely and engaging new title offers a comprehensive overview of major IOs and their role in global governance. International Organizations in World Politics by Tamar Gutner presents a variety of theoretical approaches to analyzing the roles and impact of IOs. It then examines the historical development, governance structure, activities, and performance of major IOs. The book offers comprehensive, historically-grounded overviews of the most influential IOs, including the United Nations, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and World Trade Organization. For each IO, there is a detailed case study that illuminates the constraints and challenges the IO faces in areas that include conflict resolution, development, the environment, trade, and financial crisis. The book also examines regional organizations, with an emphasis on the European Union and the euro crisis and the African Union’s peace operations.

Book Synopsis International Organizations by : Giuseppe Schiavone
Download or read book International Organizations written by Giuseppe Schiavone and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-30 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dramatic changes in the world order since 1992 - the continuing struggle in the former Yugoslavia, the creation of the World Trade Organization, the tentative steps towards European Union - have led to major revisions of Professor Schiavone's International Organizations . New entries, including the G-7, G-24, and the International Committee of the Red Cross, have been added. On the 50th anniversary of the UN special annexes on peace-keeping agencies and major resolutions are now included. The introductory essay contains an overall view of the basic features of the law of international organizations and a survey of their historical development and outstanding problems, helping the reader to set the organizations in their proper context, be it global or sectional. The main body of the book consists of alphabetically arranged entries for over 200 organizations - from the UN to specialised agencies and regional bodies in Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. Each entry is broken up into sub-headings such as Purpose, Structure, Origin and Development, and Activities. Specific data concerning addresses, principal officers, main periodic publications and a short list of works of reference are provided with each entry. Ease of access to all entries is expedited by an index of acronyms and full names. Membership charts, a table of foundation dates and a classified index complete the volume.
