Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate textbook offers advanced and contemporary readings in international trade and economic development and provides an overview of the fundamental topics in this area. It brings together many of the issues that are considered staple reading for a course in trade and development and it offers a systematic coverage of the relevant and state of the art research on various aspects of the subject. This includes detailed analysis of important sub-topics such as: trade and labour market, trade and public economics, the theory of the second best, foreign aid, factor mobility, and regional and global welfare. It also covers international trade and labour standards, the informal labour market, and TRIPS. Aimed at post-graduate students interested in trade theory and applications in development issues, this book should also prove a valuable resource for practicing economists, policy makers, and advanced undergraduate students studying international trade. The text balances extensive coverage of available literature in the area with substantive inclusions from new research published in leading journals and volumes. It aims to fill the gap in the teaching resources and should promote further theoretical and empirical research in the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how migrants and refugees can revitalise peripheral regions and communities economically. The extent to which migrants stimulate the economic activities of these regions through labour market participation, entrepreneurship, innovation and consumption is examined theoretically and empirically for the EU as a whole, as well as through empirical case studies that highlight the impact of migration at macro, company, and individual levels. A particular focus is given to the economic consequences of Third Country Nationals to places beyond the cities, i.e. the peripheral and remote regions of Europe. This book aims to provide insight into the role of migrations in low productive and labour-intensive regions. The authors provide innovative policy recommendations to stimulate the positive economic consequences of immigration to places beyond the cities. It will be of interest to students, researchers, and policymakers working within labour economics and migration and integration policies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of chapters in the Handbook of population and family economics and their organization reflect the most recent developments in economics pertaining to population issues and the family. The rationale, contents, and organization of the Handbook evolve from three premises. First, the family is the main arena in which population outcomes are forged. Second, there are important interactions and significant causal links across all demographic phenomena. Third, the study of the size, composition, and growth of a population can benefit from the application of economic methodology and tools. The diversity and depth of the work reviewed and presented in the Handbook conveys both the progress that has been made by economists in understanding the forces shaping population processes, including the behavior of families, and the many questions, empirical and theoretical, that still remain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universities in developing countries often face severe resource constraints, making it difficult for them to stock their libraries with the latest books and journals, and to attract and retain faculty who are abreast of current trends in research. In order to meet this perceived gap, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) funded a conference at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences in Calcutta, at which papers wee presented by specialists on various aspets of development. This volume comprises substantially updated and revised versions of those papers, in which the authors show how recent theoretical techniques and statistical analyses can illuminate a wide range of important issues in developing countries. The volume begins with case studies of economic reforms in Russia, Korea and Malaysia, each in its own way an example of what can go wrong with simplistic prescriptions advocating either free markets or controls independent of the institutional context. These chapters lead into models of exchange rate behaviour and balance of payments crises, and area of contemporary concern. Other chapters examine recent theoretical treatments of international trade in relation to cumulative patterns of development and underdevelopment, international labour mobility and remittances. Two largely statistical chapters come up with findings that contribute new and disturbing insights to two long-running debates, one on the deterioration of developing countries' terms of trade and the other on the weak kink between incomes and nutrition in India. A final chapter reviews various analytical perspectives on the family and fertility in developing countries. Apart from acquainting readers with recent techniques and trends, the essays also point to possible directions for future research. The book should thus be of interest to teachers and students of economics and development. Published in association with Centre for Social Science Studies, Calcutta.
