Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1940s and 1950s, Soviet musicians and ensembles were acclaimed across the globe. They toured the world, wowing critics and audiences, projecting an image of the USSR as a sophisticated promoter of cultural and artistic excellence. In Virtuosi Abroad, Kiril Tomoff focuses on music and the Soviet Union's star musicians to explore the dynamics of the cultural Cold War. He views the competition in the cultural sphere as part of the ongoing U.S. and Soviet efforts to integrate the rest of the world into their respective imperial projects. Tomoff argues that the spectacular Soviet successes in the system of international music competitions, taken together with the rapturous receptions accorded touring musicians, helped to persuade the Soviet leadership of the superiority of their system. This, combined with the historical triumphalism central to the Marxist-Leninist worldview, led to confidence that the USSR would be the inevitable winner in the global competition with the United States. Successes masked the fact that the very conditions that made them possible depended on a quiet process by which the USSR began to participate in an international legal and economic system dominated by the United States. Once the Soviet leadership transposed its talk of system superiority to the economic sphere, focusing in particular on consumer goods and popular culture, it had entered a competition that it could not win.

TCCI strives to cover new methodological, theoretical and practical aspects of CCI understood as the form of intelligence that emerges from the collaboration and competition of many individuals (artificial and/or natural). The application of multiple computational intelligence technologies, such as fuzzy systems, evolutionary computation, neural systems, consensus theory, etc., aims to support human and other collective intelligence and to create new forms of CCI in natural and/or artificial systems. This twenty-seventh issue is a special issue with 13 selected papers from the Second Seminar on Quantitative Methods of Group Decision Making.

Designed as a series of case studies analyzing music festivals, city parades, rural rituals, and contemporary bachelorette parties, this book creates a rich panorama of Poland's cultural, social, and political transformations. The catalysts for these transformations are highway drivers, music festival and street parade participants, local activists and artists, reenactors of history and tradition. Thanks to their insight, the author describes local events and communities from the inside, focusing on the values and motivations that prompted their participation in Poland’s cultural traditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although competitions in classical music have a long history, the number of contests has risen dramatically since the Second World War, all of them aiming to launch young artists' careers. This is not the symptom of marketization that it might appear to be. Despite the establishment of an international governing body, competitions are plagued by rumors of corruption, and even the most mathematically sophisticated voting system cannot quell accusations that the best talent is overlooked. Why do musicians take part? Why do audiences care so much about who wins? Performing Civility is the first book to address these questions. In this groundbreaking study, Lisa McCormick draws from firsthand observations of contests in Europe and the US, and in-depth interviews with competitors, jurors and directors, as well as blog data from competition observers to argue that competitions have endured because they are not only about music, they are also about civility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women, Music and Leadership offers a wide-ranging survey of women in musical leadership and their experiences, highlighting women’s achievements and considering how they negotiate the challenges of the leadership space in music. Women have always participated in music as performers, teachers, composers and professionals, but remain underrepresented in leadership positions. Covering women’s leadership across a wide variety of roles and musical genres, this book addresses women in classical music, gospel, blues, jazz, popular music, electronic music and non-Western musical contexts, and considers women working as composers, as conductors, and in music management and the music business. Each chapter includes several case studies of women’s careers, exploring their groundbreaking contributions to music and the challenges they faced as leaders. Connecting management theory and leadership research with feminist musicology, this book paints a new picture of women’s major contributions as leaders in music and their ongoing struggles for equity. It will be relevant to students and scholars in arts and music management, as well as all those studying music, gender or leadership, and women music professionals.
