Does the World Wide Web save endangered cultural heritage, or does it foster a society with less variety? These and other related questions are raised and answered in this book, the result of a long path across the digital heritage landscape. It provides a comprehensive view on issues and achievements in digital collections and cultural content.

Book excerpt: Invited to translate his 1992 book from the Russian, Chigogidze chose instead to produce an updated version. He introduces a powerful method used in various branches of topology and also being applied to functional analysis and algebra. He surveys the Hilbert cube and Hilbert space manifold theories, recent developments of the Menger and Nobeling manifold theories, infinite-dimensional manifolds, cohomological dimensions, the general theory of absolute extensors in dimension n and n-soft mappings, the topology of non-metrizable manifolds, and applications in a number of areas. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of its kind, this book is a systematic compilation of current knowledge of mechanics and reliability of flexible magnetic media. Chapter 1 presents the brief descriptions of physics of magnetic recording, magnetic storage systems and manufacturing processes of magnetic media. Chapter 2 presents a brief description of manufacturing processes of poly (ethylene terephthalate) films commonly used as flexible media substrate, and physical and chemical properties of the PET films and coated magnetic media. Chapter 4 presents analytical predictions of stresses in wound magnetic tapes and flexible disks. In Chapter 5, long-term reliability problems of magnetic tapes encountered during storage and use are discussed; their descriptions, mechanisms and methods of preventing them are presented. In Chapter 6, long-term reliability problems of flexible disks encountered during storage and use are discussed. Viscoelasticity theories presented in this book are very general and are applicable in systems other than magnetic-storage ones. This book is intended for three types of readers: graduate students of magnetic recording, the research worker who intends to become active in this field, and the practicing engineer who has encountered a reliability problem and hopes to solve it as expeditiously as possible.

Book excerpt: This large-format color book is the first English-language volume to celebrate the entire spectrum of scooters, from the Abbotsford to the Zweirad Union. Iconic scooters from Lambretta and Vespa naturally feature, but the book’s scope is a much broader alphabetical journey via makes such as the Csepel, Febo, Cianca, Husqvarna, Kaptein, Rumi, and a host of other famous and not so well-known names. Beautifully presented and packed with information, this authoritative study covers more than 300 makes, with plenty of engaging oddballs along the way.

Book excerpt: This text provides an introduction, at the level of an advanced student in engineering or physics, to the field of nanomechanics and nanomechanical devices. It provides a unified discussion of solid mechanics, transducer applications, and sources of noise and nonlinearity in such devices. Demonstrated applications of these devices, as well as an introduction to fabrication techniques, are also discussed. The text concludes with an overview of future technologies, including the potential use of carbon nanotubes and other molecular assemblies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of biotechnical processes in control of environmental pollution and in haz ardous waste treatment is viewed as an advantageous alternative or adduct to phys ical chemical treatment technologies. Yet, the development and implementation of both conventional and advanced biotechnologies in predictable and efficacious field applications suffer from numerous technical, regulatory, and societal uncertainties. With the application of modern molecular biology and genetic engineering, there is clear potential for biotechnical developments that will lead to breakthroughs in controlled and optimized hazardous waste treatment for in situ and unit process use. There is, however, great concern that the development of these technologies may be needlessly hindered in their applications and that the fundamental research base may not be able to sustain continued technology development. Some of these issues have been discussed in a fragmented fashion within the research and development community. A basic research agenda has been established to promote a sustainable cross-disciplinary technology base. This agenda includes developing new and improved strains for biodegradation, improving bioanalytical methods to measure strain and biodegradation performance, and providing an in tegrated environmental and reactor systems analysis approach for process control and optimization.
