It makes evidence-based policy recommendations on migration to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The key themes examined are migration and remittances, and their relations with the following issues: economic transformation, education and knowledge, corruption and conflict. Cross-cutting issues such as gender equality and youth are weaved throughout the chapters, and a rich range of country contexts are presented. The volume also discusses challenges in managing migration flows. It will be of interest to advanced students, academics and policy makers in development economics and sustainable development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These 21 national case studies of internal migration were written especially for this unusual and useful volume. . . . The resulting blend of the general and the particular, especially when viewed across the 21 countries, will be useful to a wide range of basic and applied social scientists. Choice Social and economic change within countries can often be traced through the movement of population at the national level. The abandonment or return to inner cities, the volume of movement within and between rural and urban areas, the movement of the elderly, all of these factors and others combine to give us an important picture of national change. The International Handbook on Internal Migration is a compilation of 21 case studies, each focusing on a different country, each written specifically for this book by an expert in the field. Extensively illustrated with tables and figures, the book will serve as an invaluable reference text. It will also be of great interest to students of the social sciences, especially sociology, economics, and geography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides graphic and scholarly perspectives of ethnic conflict in kenya where ethnocentrism has grown with time and where both ethnic and administrative units are coterminous. As the country's Rift Valley attracted in-migration since independence in 1963, it became the seedbed of a simmering ethnic strife that exploded in 1991-93, causing a flood of internally displaced people (IDP) and grinding agricultural activity and economic enterprise to a halt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides insights into a specific, hard-to-reach youth subpopulation—those born in agricultural areas in Western Kenya who migrate to large towns and cities—that is often missed by research and development activities. Using a mixed-methods approach, we find high variability in movement of youth between rural villages, towns, and large urban areas. Top reasons for youth migration align with existing literature, including pursuit of job opportunities and education. For youth from villages where crop farming is the primary economic activity for young adults, 77 percent responded that they are very interested in that work, in contrast to the common notion that youth are disinterested in agriculture. We also find many youth interested in settling permanently in their villages in the future. This research confirms that youth migration is dynamic, requiring that policymakers and development practitioners employ methods of engaging youth that recognize the diversity of profiles and mobility of this set of individuals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The migration of labor from rural to urban areas is an important part of the urbanization process in developing countries. Even though it has been the focus of abundant research over the past five decades, some key policy questions have not found clear answers yet. To what extent is internal migration a desirable phenomenon and under what circumstances? Should governments intervene and, if so, with what types of interventions? What should be their policy objectives? To shed light on these important issues, the authors survey the existing theoretical models and their conflicting policy implications and discuss the policies that may be justified based on recent relevant empirical studies. A key limitation is that much of the empirical literature does not provide structural tests of the theoretical models, but only provides partial findings that can support or invalidate intuitions and in that sense, support or invalidate the policy implications of the models. The authors' broad assessment of the literature is that migration can be beneficial or at least be turned into a beneficial phenomenon so that in general migration restrictions are not desirable. They also identify some data issues and research topics which merit further investigation. "--World Bank web site.
