Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have--Jesus Christ. Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials--gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. 1 Cor.3:11-13 NLT My second book of the series on discipleship builds on the foundation laid in Basic Discipleship 101. When I first received Christ into my life, I began to change dramatically. However, after the initial change, many other sins still needed to be addressed--some that proved to be more tenacious. Even though other people could not see these sins, I longed to be free from them. Driven by my guilt, I asked Christian leaders how to overcome sin. No one knew how to present principles that would enable me to overcome sin. In fact, many respected Christians denied the possibility of living a holy life, pleasing to God. One day, I read in the beatitudes: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled." I started fasting and asking Him to teach me. God responded by showing me principles which enabled me to have victory over my sins. Sometimes it came by watching a program or listening to a message, other times in conversation, and still other times through personal Bible study. After forty years, I have accumulated Biblical principles that through Christ can enable a person overcome sin. I am not perfect, but am being perfected. The more I become like Christ, the more I am aware that I am not like Christ. I am on a journey of progressive sanctification in which I continue by faith to gain victory over sins. We will never become sinless, but we can sin less and less as we surrender our lives to Christ. In this collection of studies, we will examine the concept of sin, identify the causes of sin, and consider the principles from the Bible which will enable us to overcome sin. Welcome to Intermediate Discipleship 201 Keywords: Sin, Victory, Holiness, Hope, Freedom, Power, Purpose, Bondage, Defeat, Hopelessness

Book excerpt: Is there anything more vital in today¿s world than training believers to be godly, committed, and powerful followers of Christ? Author, Glenn Shaffer, addresses the important topic with originality, wisdom, and insightful principles in Discipleship 201. This exhaustive, yet easy-to-read, interactive Bible study should be available to all, but most certainly as required reading for those in church leadership, teachers, and Bible study directors.Shaffer¿s premise is stated loud and clear: ¿There must be a systematic means of developing followers of Jesus Christ. These practical truths are not just religious rhetoric; they have been beaten out on the anvil of personal experience.¿ Shaffer puts it all in perspective: Jesus¿ command was to go and make disciples.Discipleship 201 is designed to help believers learn how to walk in the personal victory that Christ has given, and then pass it on. Jesus trained and prepared others to assume ministry responsibilities after his departure. Christians should do no less. Be infected by the author¿s enthusiasm for the vision. If you are passionate about learning to be a committed, dedicated, and bold Christian, dive into Discipleship 201.

Book excerpt: When one reaches the highest degree of human maturity, one has only one question left: How can I be helpful?—TERESA OF ÁVILA Beloved author Ronald Rolheiser continues his search for an accessible and penetrating Christian spirituality in this highly anticipated follow-up to the contemporary classic, The Holy Longing. With his trademark acuity, wit, and thoughtfulness, Rolheiser shows how identifying and embracing discipleship will lead to new heights of spiritual awareness and maturity. In this new book, Rolheiser takes us on a journey through the dark night of the senses and of the spirit. Here, we experience the full gamut of human life, pleasure and fervor, disillusionment and boredom. But, as Rolheiser explains, when we embrace the struggle and yearning to know God we can experience too a profound re-understanding to our daily lives. “What lies beyond the essentials, the basics?” Rolheiser writes. “Where do we go once some of the basic questions in our lives have been answered, or at least brought to enough peace that our focus can shift away from ourselves to others? Where do we go once the basic questions in our lives are no longer the restless questions of youthful insecurity and loneliness? Who am I? Who loves me? How will my life turn out? Where do we go once the basic question in life becomes: How can I give my life away more purely, and more meaningfully? How do I live beyond my own heartaches, headaches, and obsessions so as to help make other peoples’ lives more meaningful? The intent of this book is to try to address exactly those questions: How can we live less self- centered, more mature lives? What constitutes deep maturity and how do we reach that place? And, not unimportantly, what constitutes a more adult, Christian discipleship? What constitutes a truly mature following of Jesus?” As the poet Rainer Maria Rilke suggests, “Live the questions now.” In Sacred Fire, Rolheiser’s deeply affecting prose urges us on in pursuit of the most holy of all passions—a deep and lasting intimacy with God.

Book excerpt: Jesus challenges us to live in him and continue living out the truth so that we claim our allegiance to Christ and live as disciples free from fear and from cultural customs that contradict the gospel message. This project has found that the lack of discipleship training among the Anyuwaa churches has resulted in a lack of understanding of what this ministry entails—teaching and making disciples. In addition, failure to embed elements of the Anyuwaa culture into the discipleship approach, and the persistence of certain elements of Anyuwaa life that run counter to gospel beliefs, has inflamed this crisis. Therefore, this book presents a call for the church to challenge the culture of syncretism and the fear of witchdoctors, to shift its paradigm and begin interpreting the gospel message, utilizing contextual elements but interpreting them through the lens of the gospel, calling people to embrace gospel values within their own cultural context. When we start interpreting strong cultural beliefs and traditions through the truth of the gospel, it is proof that we have come to the best discipleship approach, as we speak the truth of the gospel in the life our church and the hearts of our believers.

Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage
