Download or read book Antiepileptic Drugs written by L. Beani and published by Springer. This book was released on 1985 with total page 904 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epileptic disorders need treatment for many years or even for life, and this makes a thorough understanding of the pharmacokinetics and possible hazards and side effects of the drugs used in treatment mandatory. During recent decades our knowledge in this field has considerably increased, not least as a result of the development of specific and sensitive methods for the determination of anti epileptic agents in biological material. The clinical pharmacology of this group of drugs has been studied extensively and can today be regarded as well established. This does not necessarily mean that drug treatment of epilepsy is without problems. For example, it has recently been shown that one of the newer anti epileptic drugs, greeted with great enthusiasm by clinicians, may in rare instances induce serious damage to the liver and the pancreas, and seems even to have a certain teratogenic potential. Clinical problems should be understood as a challenge to the experimental pharmacologist, who should try to find explanations for the clinical hazards, and, if possible, show new ways in which better drugs might be developed. In recent years interest has focused on the importance of the inhibitory transmitter 'l'-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the pathophysiology of epilepsy, and there have been a series of attempts to find useful antiepileptic drugs among substances interfering with GABA metabolism in the CNS.
Book Synopsis Enzyme Regulation in Metabolic Pathways by : Lloyd Wolfinbarger, Jr.
Download or read book Enzyme Regulation in Metabolic Pathways written by Lloyd Wolfinbarger, Jr. and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enzyme Regulation in Metabolic Pathways shows the reader how to understand the roles of enzymes and their kinetic constants in intermediary metabolism. It provides a means of correlating data obtained in experimental studies to multiple possible mechanisms through which some enzyme may catalyze the conversion of a substrate to a product. Although not the most appropriate means of determining some potential kinetic mechanism, quasi-equilibrium assumptions are used throughout the book, keeping the rate equation derivations simple. Actual metabolic pathways with known (presumed) positive and negative regulation events are linked to these potential kinetic mechanisms using both rate equation derivations and data plots illustrating how the rate equation derivations can be used to explain the data plots. This book will be a valuable reference for students in biological sciences and biochemistry majors required to take a core course in enzymology.

Download or read book Human Metabolism written by Keith N. Frayn and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The updated bestselling guide to human metabolism and metabolic regulation The revised and comprehensively updated new edition of Human Metabolism (formerly Metabolic Regulation – A Human Perspective) offers a current and integrated review of metabolism and metabolic regulation. The authors explain difficult concepts in clear and concise terms in order to provide an accessible and essential guide to the topic. This comprehensive text covers a wide range of topics such as energy balance, body weight regulation, exercise, and how the body copes with extreme situations, and illustrates how metabolic regulation allows the human body to adapt to many different conditions. This fourth edition has been revised with a new full colour text design and helpful illustrations that illuminate the regulatory mechanisms by which all cells control the metabolic processes necessary for life. The text includes chapter summaries and additional explanatory text that help to clarify the information presented. In addition, the newly revised edition includes more content on metabolic pathways and metabolic diseases. This important resource: Is a valuable tool for scientists, practitioners and students across a broad range of health sciences including medicine, biochemistry, nutrition, dietetics, sports science and nursing Includes a full colour text filled with illustrations and additional diagrams to aid understanding Offers a companion website with additional learning and teaching resources. Written for students of medicine, biochemistry, nutrition, dietetics, sports science and nursing, Human Metabolism has been revised and updated to provide a comprehensive review of metabolism and metabolic regulation.

Download or read book Cellular Energy Metabolism and Its Regulation written by Daniel E. Atkinson and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cellular Energy Metabolism and Its Regulation examines the metabolic and molecular aspects of living organisms. Beginning with a discussion of evolutionary design and its close analogy with human design, it emphasizes the notion that evolution is a process of functional design, and that the characteristics of an organism, whether morphological or molecular, were selected because of functional advantage to the organism's ancestors. Thus, the study of an enzyme, a reaction, or a sequence can be biologically relevant only if its position in the hierarchy of function is kept in mind. This book dea ...

Book Synopsis Integration and Control of Metabolism by : Naa Adamafio
Download or read book Integration and Control of Metabolism written by Naa Adamafio and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-04 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully understanding the complex process of the integration and control of metabolism in cellular organisms requires knowledge in several fundamental concepts. Drawing on nearly two decades of innovative studies, Doctors Naa Adamafio, Laud Okine, and Jonathan Adjimani specifically target the intricacies of metabolism and provide a comprehensive approach to the subject. The text is divided into three essential areas of study: Fundamentals of metabolic control--dealing with the basic concepts of metabolic control and the role played by regulatory enzymes Control of cellular metabolism--including the regulation of the metabolism of major biomolecules, such as carbohydrates, lipids, and compounds containing nitrogen The integration of metabolism--observing the methods in which various metabolic pathways within and between tissues and organs are integrated Whether you are an undergraduate student in biochemistry, a medical student in your preclinical years, or a teacher in the subject area, Integration and Control of Metabolism is a valuable medical resource.
