Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updating content from the author’s 2001 book Coal Desulfurization, this new title focuses on CO2 sequestration and utilization. It includes information on the theory and practical approaches to CO2 capture and recent advances in the use of sequestered CO2. Avoiding these pollutants requires either forgetting about the 250 billion tons of coal reserves the United States possesses or capturing and utilizing the pollutants in a profitable and environmentally responsible fashion. The book covers postcombustion and precombustion capture approaches for coal, and postcombustion capture can be generalized to many other fuels. Recent practical implementations at full-scale power facilities around the world are discussed. The book covers sequestering CO2 via underground, oceanic, biological, and other long-term CO2 storage methods. It also includes recent advances in utilizing CO2 for enhanced oil recovery, advances in storage with depleted oil and gas reservoirs and deep saline aquifers, and additional topics. The book also examines specific applications of pure CO2 and covers chemical conversion of CO2 to useful compounds. It answers questions like "Can we create methanol from coal?" or "Can we create ethanol from coal?" It is found that methanol and ethanol cannot be sustainably produced from coal power alone. However, oxalic acid can be created at a much lower energy cost than methanol or ethanol. Oxalic acid can be used to extract rare earths, which are not currently produced anywhere in the United States, but are typically concentrated in coal ash. Aimed at researchers and industry professionals in chemical, environmental, and energy engineering, this book provides insight and inspiration into capturing CO2 not merely as a response to regulatory pressure and climate change but as an inherently profitable and valuable venture.

Book excerpt: This book was written to provide a comprehensive survey of the current state-of-the-art information in coal preparation, with particular emphasis on coal desulfrization. The primary audience for this book will be practising coal preparation engineers who need complete information about all of the coal preparation and desulphurization technologies that are available now, or that may be available in the future. It will also be valuable for coal researchers who need details and comparative data for cutting-edge technologies that are still under development. The main emphasis is on physical coal preparation, but chapters also include chemical and biological technologies that are under development, but not yet used in industrial practice. Along with the successful technologies, also included are details of processes and techniques that were attempted, but were subsequently abandoned, along with discussions of the reasons they were abandoned.

Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of peer-reviewed articles providing a summary of the most recent accomplishments by many of the leaders of high-sulfur coal research and development. Improvements in coal cleaning technology by application of either physical, chemical, or biological processes, and new developments in both the froth flotation and oil agglomeration methods of cleaning are reported. Innovative electrostatic and aerodynamic methods are described for cleaning coal, and progress is noted in the development of coal desulfurization by either caustic leaching, oxidative leaching, microbial treatment, or low-temperature pyrolysis. Papers also included in this book concern the capture of sulfur oxides either during or following the combustion of coal; sorbent characterization and the effects of different factors and/or additives on sorbent utilization; the capture of sulfur oxides in various types of combustion systems, including pulverized coal, slagging, fluidized bed and magnetohydrodynamic systems. Recent technical developments are reported for sorbent injection in flue-gas ducts as a means of capturing sulfur oxides.

Book excerpt: Utilization of high sulfur coals is becoming increasingly difficult in view of tighter environmental regulations being imposed around the world. To meet the challenge of utilizing high sulfur coals without damaging the environment, many scientists and engineers around the world are engaged in developing novel technologies. In the U.S.A. alone, the federal government has spent about five billion dollars to achieve that goal. This conference, like its predecessors, emphasizes desulfurization with papers on physical and chemical cleaning as well as post-treatment and fluid-bed combustion technologies. Of the 45 papers submitted, 15 papers deal with physical cleaning and 7 deal with chemical cleaning of coal, suggesting that a major emphasis is still be placed on pre-cleaning of coal. The post-treatment technologies, being developed with the support of U.S. federal and state government agencies, emphasize removal of both SOx and NOx gases. The book will be of particular interest and benefit to researchers, graduate students and other people involved in coal processing, characterization and utilization; public policy making and administration related to energy conservation, economic development, and environmental protection; and investors in industry and new technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the guidance needed to test coal and analyze the results With the skyrocketing costs of most fuel sources, government, industry, and consumers are taking a greater interest in coal, an abundant and inexpensive alternative, which has been made more environmentally friendly through new technology. Published in response to this renewed interest, Handbook of Coal Analysis provides readers with everything they need to know about testing and analyzing coal. Moreover, it explains the meaning of test results and how these results can predict coal behavior and its corresponding environmental impact during use. The thorough coverage of coal analysis includes: * Detailed presentation of necessary standard tests and procedures * Explanation of coal behavior relative to its usage alongside the corresponding environmental issues * Coverage of nomenclature, terminology, sampling, and accuracy and precision of analysis * Step-by-step test method protocols for proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, mineral matter, physical and electrical properties, thermal properties, mechanical properties, spectroscopic properties, and solvent properties * Emphasis on relevant American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards and test methods, including corresponding International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and British Standards Institution (BSI) test method numbers To assist readers in understanding the material, a glossary of terms is provided. Each term is defined in straightforward language that enables readers to better grasp complex concepts and theory. References at the end of each chapter lead readers to more in-depth discussions of specialized topics. This is an essential reference for analytical chemists, process chemists, and engineers in the coal industry as well as other professionals and researchers who are looking to coal as a means to decrease dependence on foreign oil sources and devise more efficient, cleaner methods of energy production.
