Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of interfaces is one of the oldest areas of research in materials science. The presence of grain boundaries in materials has long been recognized, as has its crucial role in determining mechanical properties. Another long-recognized concept is that the properties of a surface are quite different from those of the bulk. In recent years, researchers have been able to study these interfaces, both internal and external, with a detail not before possible. These advances have stemmed from the ability to obtain atomic resolution images of interfaces, to measure accurate chemical compositions of interfaces, and to model these interfaces and their properties. This volume goes a step further, beyond structural and chemical studies, to explore how all of this information can be used to engineer interfaces for improved properties and overall improved material performance. Significant attention is given to the crystallographic nature of grain boundaries and interfaces, and the relationship between this nature and the performance of a material. The versatility of electron back-scattering pattern analysis (EBSP) in solving a number of interface-related problems is also featured.

For many years, however, alloys have primarily been designed with the focus on optimizing bulk properties. Recently, much more attention has been paid to designing interfaces to improve the performance of materials. This idea has been central in the development of nanoscale devices in the electronics industry, but now these concepts have also been applied to both grain boundaries and phase boundaries in structural materials. There has been a breakthrough in the area of advanced experimental tools, such as the analysis of electron backscattering patterns and in the improved simulation capabilities of interfaces in complex engineering alloys. Third has been the recognition that failures often are associated with interfaces and that materials can be processed to improve the properties. This book, first published in 2000, concentrates on the preparation and processing of interfaces, the relationships between chemistry and structure and the properties and behavior of interfaces, particularly in relation to strength and bonding.

This book was released on 2004-09-03 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book celebrates 20 years of MRS symposia on the topic of amorphous silicon. Contributors showed that the simplified theories developed to explain the limited experimental information available in the early eighties have spurred more sophisticated experimentation - either refining the early understanding or making it irrelevant. The differences of opinion that continue to exist and emerge are probably the hallmark of the amazing vitality of this field. Applications range from 'mature' thin-film transistors, solar cells and image sensors, to the 'emerging' possibility of erbium-doped nanocrystalline silicon-based materials for lasers and amorphous silicon quantum dots for luminescent devices. The book discusses material characterization, growth processes and devices. Each chapter is further subdivided into sections that group papers around common themes. Topics include: nanomaterials; electronic structure; metastable effects; understanding of growth processes; laser-induced crystallization; metal-induced crystallization; other growth techniques; newer devices; solar cells and thin-film transistors.

Book excerpt: Nanopattern formation on surfaces is influenced by many processes involving kinetics, mechanics and thermodynamics. This volume presents recent advances in technology and in scientific understanding of nanopatterning in a variety of amaterials systems. A particular emphasis is on developments in surface nanopatterning as a result of kinetics. Various other factors, such as mechanical strain and particle-source collimation, are intimately coupled with the kinetics. The book covers self-assembly and various fabrication processes of nanostructures, the fundamental mechanisms of nanostructure formation, and related topics. The papers are a valuable source of reference for researchers entering the field of nanostructures formation on surfaces. In addition, several invited papers provide a critical literature assessment, which should also prove helpful to those new to the field.
