Book excerpt: On assiste, depuis quelques années, à un vieillissement démographique de la population française. Or, pour faire face à ce véritable papy-boom, l'organisation de stratégies préventives s'impose. De nombreuses innovations dans la prise en charge des personnes âgées sont en cours. Le problème majeur qui se pose est la prise en compte de ce que l'on appelle la fragilité. La fragilité est un état instable au cours duquel un facteur mineur, comme une pathologie bénigne ou un stress exogène, peut engendrer un état morbide incapacitant. Parmi les stratégies préventives visant à démasquer précocement les différents facteurs de la fragilité, l'utilisation d'un logiciel d'évaluation gérontologique standardisée est probablement la solution la plus appropriée pour un médecin généraliste. En plus d'une aide au diagnostic positif, différentiel, étiologique, ce logiciel est un véritable outil multidementionnel permettant une évaluation globale de la personne âgée en un minimum de temps à partir d'échelles reconnues sur le plan international. Les propositions peuvent être élaborées plus facilement, un suivi peut être plus rapidement mis en place avec des réévaluations successives aisément comparables. Son caractèe ludique et sa facilité d'utilisation font qu'il est utilisable par tous et pour tous : le langage EGS devient commun, facilitant les actes de coordination et de suivi. En bref, nous sommes convaincus que l'EGS devient un des outils de base de la pratique gérontologique moderne. Eu égard à ces conclusions, est-ce que ce type d'outil logiciel ne devrait pas être "sponsorisé" par la sécurité sociale ? De la même façon que le médecin généraliste a dû, légalement, s'informatiser et a bénéficié de facilités, ne devrait-on pas inciter à l'acquisition de ce type de logiciel par le biais du fonds d'aide à la qualité des soins de ville (loi de décembre 1998) ?
