Book excerpt: General equilibrium macroeconomic models are considered essential for evaluating the impact of monetary and fiscal policies in an economy. This aspect has not received, until now, significant attention. This present work, by Dr. Muhammad Anwar, develops general equilibrium models of income determination suitable for interest-free economies. It can be used to understand several implications of making a transition from the conventional financial system to an interest-free financial system. There are numerous Muslim countries seeking to adopt the new interest-free system. These countries may find it usefrrl to utilize the insights gained from such study to facilitate the establishment of an Islamic interest-free financial system. The economic model offered in this book also shows clearly and scientifically that ifthe interest-based financial system is replaced by the interestfree financial system, then the real rates of return for savers and investors in the economy will be preserved during inflationary and deflationary periods. On the other hand, financial repression results when savers are badly hurt during inflationary periods in an interest-bearing economy. This study demonstrates that the inflation-ridden developing countries would be definiæly better offif they adopt the inærest-free financial system in place of the prevalent interest-bearing sysæm. This pioneering work is a new addition to the library of Islamic Economics and an important aid to economic planners and students of Islamic Economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the collapse of the Bretton Woods system, any pretense of a connection of the world's currencies to any real commodity has been abandoned. Yet since the 1980s, most central banks have abandoned money-growth targets as practical guidelines for monetary policy as well. How then can pure "fiat" currencies be managed so as to create confidence in the stability of national units of account? Interest and Prices seeks to provide theoretical foundations for a rule-based approach to monetary policy suitable for a world of instant communications and ever more efficient financial markets. In such a world, effective monetary policy requires that central banks construct a conscious and articulate account of what they are doing. Michael Woodford reexamines the foundations of monetary economics, and shows how interest-rate policy can be used to achieve an inflation target in the absence of either commodity backing or control of a monetary aggregate. The book further shows how the tools of modern macroeconomic theory can be used to design an optimal inflation-targeting regime--one that balances stabilization goals with the pursuit of price stability in a way that is grounded in an explicit welfare analysis, and that takes account of the "New Classical" critique of traditional policy evaluation exercises. It thus argues that rule-based policymaking need not mean adherence to a rigid framework unrelated to stabilization objectives for the sake of credibility, while at the same time showing the advantages of rule-based over purely discretionary policymaking.

Book excerpt: Elimination of Riba has been a major issue in Pakistan occupying the attention of policy makers, bankers, legal experts and Islamic scholars for the last several decades. Apart from the efforts undertaken by the government to introduce non-interest modes of financing, the debate received fresh impetus after the judgment of the Federal Shariat Court in 1991 which was further reinforced by the judgement of the Supreme Court in December 1999. The present work is the outcome of the submissions that the author made before the Supreme Court when he was invited by the Court as amicus curiae.Having expounded the basic principles of Islamic finance, the book traces the main challenges in various spheres of financial transactions and argues that a smooth transition to the new system is feasible. However, it cautions that in view of the pervasiveness of Riba in modern economies and in numerous laws, merely striking down certain impugned provisions of law may not be the most desirable course. Rather, the government will have to expend a comprehensive effort through a legislative initiative to provide for an alternative system. The book also reviews the constitutional provisions relating to government's finances and identifies areas of concern that have implications for efficient fiscal management as well as for effective elimination of Riba.

Book excerpt: A visionary case for a new monetary system that is interest-free, just and stable As a medium of exchange, money is one of the most ingenious inventions of mankind, as it facilitates the trade of goods and services and allows for specialization and the division of labor. However, compound interest and inflation have caused our monetary system to balloon to the point where bailing out banks, large corporations, and even entire countries will not prevent a complete breakdown of the global economy-unless we change the system in fundamental ways. It's time for a grassroots movement to knock conventional money off its pedestal and replace it with a fresh paradigm that puts people before profits. A guide not only for the 99% but also for the 1%, Occupy Money demonstrates that the creation of a stable and sustainable monetary system will reflect real wealth rather than the smoke and mirrors of speculative profit, thus providing an alternative to the Age of Austerity. This vision can be realized through such creative initiatives as: Establishing time banks and complementary currencies geared to specific services such as health and education Eliminating interest through interest-free loans and "demurrage", which rewards currency circulation Re-localizing economies through regional currencies. For many years financial insiders have hidden economic truths by describing them in arcane terms that no layperson can understand. Occupy Money uses clear, simple and concise language to explain how money will serve people instead of people serving money, and in doing so it issues a challenge to the very foundations of conventional economic doctrine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed look at the fast-growing field of Islamic banking and finance The Art of Islamic Banking and Finance is a modern American take on what it means to incorporate Islamic finance principles into everyday banking and investment techniques by introducing a new brand of banking for all people of all faiths: The Riba-Free (RF) banking. The author is considered the father of RF (Islamic) banking in America. He has been a banker and an Imam/scholar for over 40 years in America since 1968. He started the tedious process with a finance company, LARIBA, in Pasadena, California in 1987. This is the first book ever in the field to trace the origins of prohibiting the renting of money at a price called interest rate and over-indulging in debt. The book reviews in great details the theological foundations of prohibiting interest in the Jewish Bible, the Christian Bible, and the Qur'aan. The author then discusses money and how fiat money is created, the role of the Federal Reserve, and the banking system in America. The book also discusses for the first time ever how to include an important aspect of RF (Islamic) finance using commodity indexation and marking the items to be financed to market in order to avoid participating in economic "bubbles." The author discusses how these rules work, how they affect consumer behavior, and how they change the role of the banker/financier. Covers a new pioneering model that is based on the Law (Shari'aa) and how it is applied in every transaction from joint ventures and portfolio management to home mortgages and personal financing Shows how to incorporate the Law (Shari'aa) into American financing and banking systems Points to RF (Islamic) finance and banking as a way to emphasize socially responsible investing The Art of Islamic Banking and Finance also includes a discussion on the emergence of a culture of RF (Islamic) banking and finance today, which is based on the real Judeo-Christian-Islamic spirit and very effective when compared to twentieth-century models that use financial engineering and structuring techniques to circumvent the Law (Shari'aa). The book also includes case studies based on the actual experience of the author and detailed analysis of the superior results realized by applying this new brand of banking to financing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than two years ago the European Central Bank (ECB) adopted a negative interest rate policy (NIRP) to achieve its price stability objective. Negative interest rates have so far supported easier financial conditions and contributed to a modest expansion in credit, demonstrating that the zero lower bound is less binding than previously thought. However, interest rate cuts also weigh on bank profitability. Substantial rate cuts may at some point outweigh the benefits from higher asset values and stronger aggregate demand. Further monetary accommodation may need to rely more on credit easing and an expansion of the ECB’s balance sheet rather than substantial additional reductions in the policy rate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was originally published by Macmillan in 1936. It was voted the top Academic Book that Shaped Modern Britain by Academic Book Week (UK) in 2017, and in 2011 was placed on Time Magazine's top 100 non-fiction books written in English since 1923. Reissued with a fresh Introduction by the Nobel-prize winner Paul Krugman and a new Afterword by Keynes’ biographer Robert Skidelsky, this important work is made available to a new generation. The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money transformed economics and changed the face of modern macroeconomics. Keynes’ argument is based on the idea that the level of employment is not determined by the price of labour, but by the spending of money. It gave way to an entirely new approach where employment, inflation and the market economy are concerned. Highly provocative at its time of publication, this book and Keynes’ theories continue to remain the subject of much support and praise, criticism and debate. Economists at any stage in their career will enjoy revisiting this treatise and observing the relevance of Keynes’ work in today’s contemporary climate.

The amplitude of all phases of the business cycle will be smaller in an Islamic economy compared to advanced capitalist economies where the fixity of the fluctuating short term interest rates account for the unstable and cyclical behaviour of investment. This is demonstrated by emphasising the dependence of investment decisions on financing and capital valuation (following Gordon, Tobin, and Minsky) then using a qualitative model of two differenttial equations to express financing conditions and investment behaviour. PLS financing makes payment commitments a function of cash flows and strongly discourages the financing of speculative borrowers - thus, eliminating the main sources of volatility in capitalist economies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the idea of interest-free finance, which offers an alternative to the interest-based financial system that is so prevalent today. Interest-free finance is not a new concept - it has been used for centuries in various cultures and religions - but it is increasingly relevant in the modern world. Interest-free finance offers the potential for a more equitable and sustainable financial system, one that is less dependent on debt and interest payments and more focused on creating value for all stakeholders. In this book, we will explore the history and evolution of interest-free finance, the different types of interest-free financing available today, and the advantages and disadvantages of interest-free finance. We will also examine how interest-free finance is used around the world, from Islamic banking and microfinance to interest-free financing in Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, and Christianity. We will look at the legal and regulatory frameworks that are necessary for implementing interest-free finance, and we will examine some of the challenges and opportunities that arise when trying to scale interest-free finance in the modern economy. Finally, we will consider the role of interest-free finance in building a more equitable and sustainable future, and we will explore how interest-free finance can contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This book is not intended as a comprehensive guide to interest-free finance, but rather as an introduction to this important and timely topic. It is my hope that this book will inspire readers to think critically about the role of interest in our financial system and to consider the potential benefits of interest-free finance.
