Book excerpt: Excerpt from Interest and Effort in Education IT is a pleasant privilege to present the following monograph to the profession and the public, for there is no discussion which is more fundam&tal to the interpretation and reform of current teach ing than this statement of the functions of inter est and effort in education. Its active acceptance bteachers would bring about a complete trans formation of classroom methods. A soldier under arrest for dereliction of duty has killed a guard and escaped to join the rebels, taking crucial information that led to the massacre of nine men on patrol. Someone must have helped him, and medical orderly John Tallis is the only man unaccounted for at the time. He is now on trial for his life, and Narraway is commanded to defend him. Narraway knows that his is an impossible task. The British Army needs justice to be carried out in full, and there seems no doubt of Tallis's guilt. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Normal Readers, Vol. 3 For the primary teacher the study of history, especially in its beginnings, is extremely important. If we would really understand the minds of children, let us turn back to the pages of the past where we may follow the development of the race as it has been led forward toward perfect adjustment and realization, for in the develop ment of the race we may see that of the typical child. By actual experience in teaching we learn that certain things appeal most to children and are therefore most effective at specific stages of their advancement. We are often able to determine very nearly the learning point of the child's mind, and by the study of the child in the light of history we come to understand why all this is true. We see that those elements which have entered most persistently into the development of the race are the very things in which the child finds his greatest delight. This truth has a deep significance in practical education. If we as teachers will be guided by the natural spontaneous interest of children and if we will at the same time direct this interest toward their highest good, following in advance as it were, we shall not be found blindly striving against Nature and perhaps checking many a God-given impulse, but by understanding the child's real need we may be able to supply it more fully and exactly and so to assist the natural course of his advancement. This is the central thought of the American Normal Readers. An effort has been made throughout to provide material interesting and truly profitable to the child because suited to his needs, and helpful and suggestive to the teacher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Education The present work is the outgrowth of actual class-room experience in teaching the subject for two years in the State Normal School at Milwaukee and eight years in the State Uni versity of Iowa. Previous to this experience, many of the ideas here expressed had been gradually shaping themselves while the author was teaching and supervising in public schools. All of the material has been carefully tested in junior and senior university classes, and much of it in advanced normal school classes. Portions of several chapters have been given many times in teachers' institutes and associations. The distinct aim, however, has been to produce a text-book of college grade for beginners in the study of educational science. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamentals of Education The purpose of this volume is to interpret present day educational problems from the standpoint of pragmatic philosophy. The discussion is centered chiefly on two main topics; viz., the aims or ideals which should be dominant in education, and the nature of the mind or intelligence with which education has to deal. The book is written in the conviction that educational theory and practice have been vitiated by preconceptions which were historically inevitable but which are unjustifiable in the light of modern knowl edge. These preconceptions must be eliminated if education is to make its proper contribution towards the enrichment of life and towards making the world safe for democracy. The development during recent years of scientific method in the field of education has brought with it a comparative neglect of the more fundamental issues. For the time being this shift of emphasis towards scientific investigation was prob ably desirable. Its effect has been to place educational research on a permanent basis. But unless the study of detailed problems is properly correlated with theory, there is serious danger that education will simply be come more complicated, and perhaps more mechanical. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters and Lectures on Education It has been said that all great thinkers and reformers have worked out and enunciated their main ideas, before they had attained the age of thirty. Be this true or not, it applies to Herbart. The Science of Education, published when he was thirty-two, contains all his chief ideas on education, and the application of psychology thereto, either fully developed or in the germ to be worked out later on. These two books we have been comparing, may thus be said to represent the two ends of the thread of Herbart's life-long educational activity. It is a singular testimony to the power and depth as well as to the ripeness of his intellect, that he should have been able at that early age to formulate a body of educational principles which proved to be so true, so well founded, and so practical, that after thirty years' experience and testing, he found little or no thing to alter, beyond elucidating them and extending their ap plication. And no w, for half a century since his death, other men have continuously entered into his labours, have taken up his ideas and principles, are carrying on the work he began, and still find those principles to be sound, those ideas to be true. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Education Method and Other Papers on Education The publication, in a collected form, of the papers included in this volume may not be without value at the present critical juncture of educational affairs when so many serious attempts are being made to bring our school system into harmony with the times and'to improve the methods of teaching. The earlier articles are didactic: in these I have sought to give reasons for the introduction of scientific method into all schools. The later articles are con structive: they contain the suggestions which, from time to time, I have ventured to make for the improve ment of the methods of teaching elementary physical science. Whilst the former may be of interest to the general reader, the latter will appeal more to the specialist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lettres on Elementary and Practical Education The results to be anticipated from a proper course in that respect, are of such vital interest to all classes in this distracted community, that the public mind should be directed to the subject of education. In a series of familiar letters, I intend to make an effort to agitate the public mind, on the all important subject of Elementary and Practical Education. I claim the indulgence of my readers; I have no pretensions to superiority of thought, what I would say, most of us know. My object is to draw public attention to a subject which is little attended to, probably from its being looked upon as too familiar; and like the elements of nature, earth, air, tire and water, as a matter of course, too commonplace, either to need investigation, or excite our interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education and Social Progress Education, not in the old narrow sense of school teaching, but as comprising all the forces that develop the powers and form the minds and characters of the young, is now recognised as the most important method of social intervention, and the most powerful means by which democracy can secure the realisation of its ideals. As a consequence, there is growing up a new body of educational literature less specialised in substance and less narrow in aim and interest than that which has hitherto been common. It is the aim of this volume to present some of those wider aspects of education, and to show the part that education, properly interpreted and exercised, may play in removing the barriers to social progress, and in im proving the condition of the whole body politic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Interest Factors in Primary Reading Material In each case the basis of criticism is the wastefulness attendant upon divided attention. With the sum of human attainments ever mounting, and a commensurate increase in the knowledge and skills necessitated by an ever more complex civilization, it becomes important to consider economy of time and effort, together with excellence of product, in education as in any other modern enter prise. To this end it is essential that education be so organized as to utilize existing interests and develop those which are potential, thus harnessing the forces of native tendencies and integrating them for desirable ends. In June following the Board was organized, and its Secretary Chosen. The duties of the Secretary, as expressed in the Act, are, to "collect information of the actual condition and efficiency of the Common Schools, and other means of popular education; and to diffuse as widely as possible, throughout every part of the Commonwealth, information of the most approved and successful methods of arranging the studies, and conducting the education of the young, to the end, that all children in this Commonwealth, who depend upon Common Schools for instruction, may have the best education which those schools can be made to impart. The Board, immediately after its organization, issued an "Address to the Public," inviting the friends of education to assemble in convention, in their respective counties, in the ensuing autumn; and the Secretary was requested to be present at those conventions, both for the purpose of obtaining information in regard to the condition of the schools, and of explaining to the public what were supposed to be the leading motives and objects of the Legislature in creating the Board. The author of the following Lectures was a member of the Legislature when the act establishing the Board was passed; and he was intimately acquainted with the general views of its projectors and advocates.
