This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles collected in this volume give a broad overview of the current state of surface science. Pioneers in the field and researchers met together at this Solvay Conference to discuss important new developments in surface science, with an emphasis on the common area between solid state physics and physical chemistry. The contributions deal with the following subjects: structure of surfaces, surface science and catalysis, two-dimensional physics and phase transitions, scanning tunneling microscopy, surface scattering and surface dynamics, chemical reactions at surfaces, solid-solid interfaces and superlattices, and surface studies with synchrotron radiation. On each of these subjects an introductory review talk and a number of short research contributions are followed by extensive discussions, which appear in full in the text. This nineteenth Solvay Conference commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Solvay Institutes.

Download or read book Surface Science, Proceedings of the 9th Interdisciplinary Surface Science Conference, 22-25 April 1991, Southampton, UK written by B. E. Hayden and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preparation and characterization of monolayer and multilayer films of organic molecules, physically and chemically absorbed on surfaces are discussed with special attention paid to the remarkable properties of Langmuir-Blodgett films. Dynamics of reactions at surfaces and details of the potential energy hypersurface (enabling absorption and reaction of molecules) are explored. A variety of techniques sensitive to local adsorbate structure are covered and compared with techniques which probe long-range order. Adsorption and reactions at semiconductor surfaces emphasizing fundamental studies using surface and/or gas analysis methods are covered. The relevance of this work to etching, chemical vapour and other deposition processes is highlighted. New techniques permitting the study of structure at the atomic level at condensed interfaces, as well as single molecular events are detailed.
Book Synopsis Graphics and Animation in Surface Science by : D.D Vvedensky
Download or read book Graphics and Animation in Surface Science written by D.D Vvedensky and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing problems in physics, chemistry, materials science, and computer science, Graphics and Animation in Surface Science demonstrates how graphics and animation can be used as integral tools for understanding molecular processes in science. The book presents several different types of graphics of varying sophistication, and shows how difficult aspects of physical problems can be modeled and understood using graphical simulations. It introduces terminology where applicable, explores a wide variety of applications, and illustrates some results in an eight-page color section. Requiring only a modest amount of computing knowledge, the book includes abundant references for further reading with contact names and addresses that enable readers to obtain software to reproduce the results described in the text.

Book Synopsis Representation in Scientific Practice Revisited by : Catelijne Coopmans
Download or read book Representation in Scientific Practice Revisited written by Catelijne Coopmans and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-01-03 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh approach to visualization practices in the sciences that considers novel forms of imaging technology and draws on recent theoretical perspectives on representation. Representation in Scientific Practice, published by the MIT Press in 1990, helped coalesce a long-standing interest in scientific visualization among historians, philosophers, and sociologists of science and remains a touchstone for current investigations in science and technology studies. This volume revisits the topic, taking into account both the changing conceptual landscape of STS and the emergence of new imaging technologies in scientific practice. It offers cutting-edge research on a broad array of fields that study information as well as short reflections on the evolution of the field by leading scholars, including some of the contributors to the 1990 volume. The essays consider the ways in which viewing experiences are crafted in the digital era; the embodied nature of work with digital technologies; the constitutive role of materials and technologies—from chalkboards to brain scans—in the production of new scientific knowledge; the metaphors and images mobilized by communities of practice; and the status and significance of scientific imagery in professional and popular culture. Contributors Morana Alač, Michael Barany, Anne Beaulieu, Annamaria Carusi, Catelijne Coopmans, Lorraine Daston, Sarah de Rijcke, Joseph Dumit, Emma Frow, Yann Giraud, Aud Sissel Hoel, Martin Kemp, Bruno Latour, John Law, Michael Lynch, Donald MacKenzie, Cyrus Mody, Natasha Myers, Rachel Prentice, Arie Rip, Martin Ruivenkamp, Lucy Suchman, Janet Vertesi, Steve Woolgar
Book Synopsis Beam Effects, Surface Topography, and Depth Profiling in Surface Analysis by : Alvin W. Czanderna
Download or read book Beam Effects, Surface Topography, and Depth Profiling in Surface Analysis written by Alvin W. Czanderna and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books are available that detail the basic principles of the different methods of surface characterization. On the other hand, the scientific literature provides a resource of how individual pieces of research are conducted by particular labo- tories. Between these two extremes the literature is thin but it is here that the present volume comfortably sits. Both the newcomer and the more mature scientist will find in these chapters a wealth of detail as well as advice and general guidance of the principal phenomena relevant to the study of real samples. In the analysis of samples, practical analysts have fairly simple models of how everything works. Superimposed on this ideal world is an understanding of how the parameters of the measurement method, the instrumentation, and the char- teristics of the sample distort this ideal world into something less precise, less controlled, and less understood. The guidance given in these chapters allows the scientist to understand how to obtain the most precise and understood measu- ments that are currently possible and, where there are inevitable problems, to have clear guidance as the extent of the problem and its likely behavior.
