Book Synopsis The Science of Photomedicine by : J.D. Regan
Download or read book The Science of Photomedicine written by J.D. Regan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the history of photomedicine dates back thousands of years, with even preliterate cultures appreciating the healing properties of sunlight, for many workers in the discipline photomedicine is associated with the observation about 100 years ago of Niels Finsen, a Danish physician. Finsen recognized that people with tuberculosis who lived in Norway and who had very little exposure to sunlight often developed facial lesions (lupus vulgaris) which would decrease and sometimes disappear during the summer months. This very observant physician reasoned that artificial light ought to produce the same effect as sunlight and began utilizing the radiation from the newly available carbon arc. At first, he used a glass lens to concentrate the radiation, but since this produced considerable burning, he replaced this with a hollow glass lens filled with water. However, while this reduced the heat burns, it did not actually duplicate the effect of direct sunlight. Finally, using a hollow lens filled with water but equipped with quartz windows, Finsen was able to imitate, even improve upon, the effect of sunlight. As a result, lupus vulgaris was practically eliminated from the Scandinavian countries.

Download or read book Classic Papers written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-06-20 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Articles in this Classic Papers volume are rewritten, up-dated and extended versions of papers published in previous volumes of Advances in Botanical Research, chosen because of the high citation of the original papers and the increase of knowledge in the field today.Boulter and Croy discuss the structure and biosynthesis of legume seed storage proteins, an area that has been revolutionized in recent years by advances in 3-D structural analysis and methods of gene manipulation.Raven writes about the significant progress made in our understanding of the biochemistry of inorganic carbon acquisition by marine autotrophs, and places this new information in evolutionary and biogeochemical contexts. Advances in biochemistry have also made impact on research into cyanotixons. Carmichael considers the expansion of cyanotoxin research in the light of the negative impact of these toxins on water quality and aquaculture industries. The structure and regulation of algal photosystems are discussed by Larkum and Howe. They write about the diversity of algal photochemical apparatus and light-harvesting strategy, which has only been appreciated with the use of molecular genetic approaches. Finally, Kunze, Saedler and Loonig review advances in the field of plant transposable elements and the mechanism of transposition. They cover the role of transposable elements in evolution and their use as molecular tools, the importance of which has only speculated on in the original paper in 1986.
Book Synopsis Causes of Photooxidative Stress and Amelioration of Defense Systems in Plants by : Christine H. Foyer
Download or read book Causes of Photooxidative Stress and Amelioration of Defense Systems in Plants written by Christine H. Foyer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-22 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an attempt to improve communication between disciplines in this field, we have aimed to cover what we perceive to be all relevant aspects of photooxidative stress: from primary reactions to molecular genetics and the devising of strategies for engineering stress tolerance in plants. We hope to achieve a forum for new ideas, concepts, and approaches. The intellectual challenge also arose because we wished to produce a work that was accessible to both specialist and nonspecialist. We have encouraged our authors to provide personal perspectives of their topics while discussing them in depth. To this end, the nonspecialist will find that some chapters include relatively simple introductions and conclusions, e.g., Foyer and Harbinson (Chapter 1); Gressel and Galun (Chapter 10).
Book Synopsis Photochemical and Photobiological Reviews by : Kendric Smith
Download or read book Photochemical and Photobiological Reviews written by Kendric Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goals of the science of photobiology can be divided into four cate gories: to develop (1) ways to optimize the beneficial effects of light on man and his environment, (2) methods to protect organisms, including man, from the detrimental effects of light, (3) photochemical tools for use in studies of life processes, and (4) photochemical therapies in medicine. To achieve these goals will require the knowledgeable collaboration of biologists, chemists, engineers, mathematicians, physicians, and phys icists, because photobiology is a truly multidisciplinary science. While a multidisciplinary science is more intellectually demanding, it also has a greater potential for unexpected breakthroughs that can occur when data from several areas of science are integrated into new concepts for the oretical or practical use. Photochemical and Photobiological Reviews continues to provide in-depth coverage of the many specialty areas of photobiology. It is hoped that these reviews will provide an important service to the younger sci entists in the field and to senior scientists in related fields, because they provide a ready access to the recent literature in the field, and more importantly, they frequently offer a critical evaluation of the direction that the field is taking, or suggest a redirection when appropriate.

Download or read book Primary Processes of Photosynthesis written by Gernot Renger and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007 with total page 1093 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary processes of photosynthesis lead to transformation of solar radiation into electrochemical Gibbs energy - the driving force for life on Earth. These intricate and fascinating processes have been researched and analysed for generations and in this two part set the Editor has brought together contributions from numerous leading scientific experts providing a compendium of information offering the most up-to-date understanding of the primary processes of photosynthesis. In addition to providing high quality structure information at atomic resolution for a range of reaction centres and antenna complexes the contributors have competently summarized the current knowledge on the mechanisms of light harvesting, charge separation, electron transport, water cleavage and ATP synthesis. This outstanding work represents the activity of researchers across the globe and will be of utmost interest to all those working in the fields of Photochemistry, Bio-organic Chemistry, Bio-inorganic Chemistry, Crystallography, Biological Sciences, Biochemistry and related disciplines.
