Leading experts in the field explain treatment techniques in detail, highlighting key considerations in the use of external beam radiation therapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, particle therapy, radiosurgery, and stereotactic body radiation therapy. Specific recommendations are described for different tumor types, and helpful information provided on other important issues, such as the interaction of radiotherapy and systemic therapy and the avoidance of treatment complications. With the development of modern technology, highly conformal radiotherapy techniques have become more complicated, yet also more widely employed. This book will equip readers with the knowledge required to set up practices to deliver quality brain and spinal radiation therapy appropriate to each patient. It will be of benefit to radiation oncologists, clinical oncologists, medical physicists, medical dosimetrists, radiation therapists, and senior nurses as well as medical oncologists and surgical oncologists with an interest in radiotherapy.

A multitude of liver-directed therapies are available for patients, ranging from surgery and liver transplantation to intra-arterial therapies, thermal ablation procedures, systemic therapies, and radiation treatments. With the introduction of hypofractionated irradiation, particle therapy, and radioembolization, there is growing interest in the use of radiation as a treatment for liver malignancies. This book examines basic principles of the management of liver tumors. The evolving roles of x-ray and particle therapies as well as radioembolization in the treatment of liver tumors is the main focus. A theme of multidisciplinary management is also emphasized, as surgical, interventional and systemic therapies are reviewed. A unique resource that discusses the role of radiation treatment in the context of other liver-directed therapies, Radiation Therapy for Liver Tumors is of broad interest to radiation oncologists, surgeons, hepatologists, medical oncologists, and radiologists.

Book excerpt: In this book, leading experts in cancer immunotherapy join forces to provide a comprehensive guide that sets out the main principles of oncoimmunology and examines the latest advances and their implications for clinical practice, focusing in particular on drugs with FDA/EMA approvals and breakthrough status. The aim is to deliver a landmark educational tool that will serve as the definitive reference for MD and PhD students while also meeting the needs of established researchers and healthcare professionals. Immunotherapy-based approaches are now inducing long-lasting clinical responses across multiple histological types of neoplasia, in previously difficult-to-treat metastatic cancers. The future challenges for oncologists are to understand and exploit the cellular and molecular components of complex immune networks, to optimize combinatorial regimens, to avoid immune-related side effects, and to plan immunomonitoring studies for biomarker discovery. The editors hope that this book will guide future and established health professionals toward the effective application of cancer immunology and immunotherapy and contribute significantly to further progress in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does radiation medicine need more regulation or simply better-coordinated regulation? This book addresses this and other questions of critical importance to public health and safety. The issues involved are high on the nation's agenda: the impact of radiation on public safety, the balance between federal and state authority, and the cost-benefit ratio of regulation. Although incidents of misadministration are rare, a case in Pennsylvania resulting in the death of a patient and the inadvertent exposure of others to a high dose of radiation drew attention to issues concerning the regulation of ionizing radiation in medicine and the need to examine current regulatory practices. Written at the request from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Radiation in Medicine reviews the regulation of ionizing radiation in medicine, focusing on the NRC's Medical Use Program, which governs the use of reactor-generated byproduct materials. The committee recommends immediate action on enforcement and provides longer term proposals for reform of the regulatory system. The volume covers: Sources of radiation and their use in medicine. Levels of risk to patients, workers, and the public. Current roles of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, other federal agencies, and states. Criticisms from the regulated community. The committee explores alternative regulatory structures for radiation medicine and explains the rationale for the option it recommends in this volume. Based on extensive research, input from the regulated community, and the collaborative efforts of experts from a range of disciplines, Radiation in Medicine will be an important resource for federal and state policymakers and regulators, health professionals involved in radiation treatment, developers and producers of radiation equipment, insurance providers, and concerned laypersons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oligometastatic disease represents an intermediate state between the early localized disease and widespread metastatic malignancy. Some patients with oligometastatic disease, treated by ablative therapies to all sites of metastatic disease, can achieve long disease-free survival and sometimes cure. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) are accepted treatment options for these patients, achieving high rates of local control. While most of the studies report outcomes of SBRT for solitary oligometastasis, patients with oligometastatic disease might present with multiple concurrent lesions either in the same organ or in neighboring organs. There are few studies addressing the role of SBRT in patients with multiple concurrent oligometastases. Furthermore, these patients likely recur either in the same organ or at distance. Therefore, the need for retreatment with SBRT might be required. There remains a dearth of data regarding the re-irradiation after prior SBRT, toxicity, and dose volume constraints. Particularly as it related to significant improvements in systemic therapies (including immunotherapies), it is likely that patients with widespread metastases can become oligometastatic after systemic treatments. While targeted, immune therapies and SBRT are increasingly used in patients with oligometastatic disease, their sequencing, interaction, and toxicities have not been studied and are poorly understood. In this e-book, we discuss the state of the science of oligometastatic disease & SBRT in a variety of locations and outline potential future direction of research efforts.
