Aujourd'hui les recherches sont poussées vers les verres dopés et les structures hybrides pour la réalisation de composants actifs. L'ajout de fonctions optiques non linéaires donne de nouvelles perspectives à cette technologie. Un exemple de non linéarité est une contrainte mécanique exercée sur un guide d'onde. Cette contrainte va changer l'indice de réfraction du guide. Une onde acoustique qui se déplace dans ou sur le verre va changer localement son indice de réfraction. Ce travail de thèse est dédié à l'interaction acousto-optique sur verre. Deux types d'ondes acoustiques sont étudiés, les ondes de volume et les ondes de surface. Le résultat de cette recherche nous a permis de simplifier un capteur de déplacement développé antérieurement au sein du laboratoire et de concevoir un nouvel analyseur de polarisation intégré sur verre. Les perspectives de ce travail sont d'introduire l'effet acousto-optique en optique intégrée sur verre, de l'exploiter et de l'améliorer pour la réalisation de nouvelles fonctions optiques.

Book excerpt: La modélisation des processus d'échange d'ions Ag+/Na+ dans les verres alumino-boro-silicates, conduisant à une bonne simulation des procédés de fabrication des structures d'indice utilisées dans le domaine des télécommunications, se heurte actuellement à des difficultés d'ordre expérimental et théorique. En effet, les interactions entre les ions mobiles et la matrice vitreuse suivent des lois de type thermodynamique et électrique. Les paramètres caractérisant la diffusion ionique de ces ions sont nombreux et difficiles à mesurer directement. En outre, l'application d'un champ externe induit des flux ioniques inhomogènes complexes. Nous proposons ici un modèle unifié de diffusion ionique intervenant dans l'échange Ag+/Na+ dans les verres silicates, mêlant les approches thermodynamiques et les approches dites « conductives ». Ce modèle permet de rendre compte des phénomènes observés lors d'analyses structurelles du verre (EXAFS), de mesures de conductivité (« effet alcalin mixte ») et de mesure de coefficient d'interdiffusion. Les paramètres de diffusion sont donnés par une technique d'ajustement sur des profils expérimentaux RNF (Refracted Near Field) de guides d'ondes plans. La modélisation des guides optiques mono et bidimensionnels est en très bon accord avec les profils mesurés expérimentalement. Nous évaluons en outre la stabilité des procédés de fabrication de guides optiques utilisés industriellement dans le domaine des télécommunications optiques. En vue de l'élaboration de réseaux de Bragg, plusieurs méthodes numériques de calcul électromagnétique très récentes de type RCWA (Rigorous Coupled Wave Analysis) sont adaptées au cas des réseaux de Bragg à profils d'indice quelconques. Les performances ultimes de réseaux de Bragg fabriqués par échange d'ions sont évaluées et les modèles de diffusion et de diffraction sont confrontés aux réseaux réalisés. Les réseaux de Bragg sont bien modélisés par nos méthodes. Ceux-ci ont des performances comparables aux performances des réseaux de Bragg réalisés dans les fibres optiques.

Ces mesures montrent que le dispositif développé présente un bon rapport signal sur bruit et une faible dépendance vis-à-vis de la polarisation optique.

Book excerpt: L'optique intégrée sur verre est une technologie mature dont les nombreuses applica-tions vont des télécommunications optiques aux capteurs. L'amélioration constante des per-formances des dispositifs réalisés est basée sur une densification des fonctions et donc uneréduction des dimensions des guides d'onde ainsi qu'une augmentation de la densité de puis-sance que ceux-ci transportent. Dans ce travail, nous avons donc étudié les performancesultimes de la technologie de l'échange d'ions argent/sodium sur verre en matière de confi-nement et de longueur de propagation. En particulier, dans le cas de la génération d'effetsnon-linéaires, nous avons mis en évidence la nécessité de trouver un compromis entre ces deuxaspects. Nous démontrons alors que les performances des guides d'onde obtenus par échanged'ions argent/sodium sont intrinsèquement limitées par les pertes optiques attribuées à laprésence d'argent métallique. Ceci se traduit par la présence d'un seuil d'endommagementà fortes densités de puissances. Pour dépasser cette limitation nous avons proposé et ini-tié alors un changement radical de technologie dont nous présentons les premiers résultatsobtenus par échange thallium/sodium sur un verre spécifiquement développé.

They were introduced about twenty years ago and have gained increasing interest since then, both because of their amazing physical properties and because of their potential applications. The topic of phononic crystals stands as the cross-road of physics (condensed matter physics, wave propagation in inhomogeneous and periodic media) and engineering (acoustics, ultrasonics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering). Phononic crystals cover a wide range of scales, from meter-size periodic structures for sound in air to nanometer-size structures for information processing or thermal phonon control in integrated circuits. Phononic crystals have a definite relation with the topic of photonic crystals in optics. His first assignment was with the University of Paris VI before he was appointed to the CNRS, the French National Research Center. His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.
