Book excerpt: Globalization of business markets and the rapid development of information technology are making information management more and more important. By combining managerial and economic theory, this book builds a framework to demonstrate facilitating factors for inter-organizational information exchange and the effects of information exchange on supply chain compliance and business performance. We have strong indications, both theoretical and empirical, that such an integrative conceptual framework is needed to grasp the complexity of information exchange between business partners. Using empirical evidence from the poultry chain in Mainland China, this book supports the complementary roles between contractual governance and trust in the process of improving the willingness to communicate. It also proposes that communication quality needs to be broader than information quality. Finally, it illustrates that in order to stand out from main competitors, companies should not only commit to realizing more potential communication benefits for themselves, but also for their main partners. Different solutions for buyers and suppliers in optimizing their business performance are also discussed. This book is recommended for a broad audience of professionals, practitioners and policy makers who concern themselves with information management, supply chain management, channel relationship management and performance management.

Book excerpt: This research is conducted within the broad theme of how interorganizational information systems may help firms to make better decisions and how these improved decisions may lead to improved firm performance. The theoretical model developed in this research reflects the notion that when higher quality information is exchanged between supply chain partners, outcomes of joint planning and decision-making processes will be improved, which will lead to improved firm performance. Within this framework, one of the fundamental propositions is that an effective interorganizational information system will increase the quality of the information exchanged between supply chain partners. The increased quality of information associated with interorganizational information systems is expected to be associated with better outcomes from joint planning and decision making processes, which are in turn expected to be associated with greater levels of performance. The theoretical model was tested using a sample of 169 purchasing and supply chain managers and executives primarily located in the United States. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed in this research to estimate the parameters associated with the relationships of interest. Key results from this research include the finding that information quality has a significant impact on the outcomes of eight different joint planning and decision making processes and that these processes are associated with certain firm-level performance outcomes. Further, within several of these processes, the effect of information quality on joint planning and decision making outcomes is significantly larger for interorganizational information system enabled information quality than for non-interorganizational information system enabled information quality. Theoretical and practical insight is developed within each of the eight joint planning and decision making contexts.

Book excerpt: Never in history have global supply-chain relationships in high-tech electronics firms been more sophisticated, complicated, and almost always tied in some major aspect to China. This research examines how interorganizational (IO) cooperation impacts performance and what role relationship learning and information technology (IT) integration play in the value-creation process for Chinese suppliers in business-to-business (B2B) supply chains. The researchers examine this issue using data collected from face-to-face interviews with supply chain managers and executives from 1,004 Chinese high-tech electronic component suppliers. The results strongly support the hypothesis that IO cooperation improves a supplier's performance regarding both its major customer and overall marketplace. Relationship learning and IT integration are important mediating variables that drive performance. The strongest effect in our study was the influence of IO cooperation on relationship learning. A unique aspect of this study is that it focuses on a very large sample of a specific supplier type -- high-tech Chinese suppliers. This, combined with the fact that the sampled companies were involved in manufacturing 13 different product groups, greatly increases the generalizability of the results.

Book excerpt: Sharing accurate and timely supply and demand information throughout a supply chain can yield significant performance improvements to all members of the supply chain. Despite the benefits, many firms are reluctant to share information with their supply chain partners due to an unequal distribution of risks, costs, and benefits among the partners. Thus, incentive mechanisms must be in place to induce communication, cooperation, and collaboration among all members of a supply chain. The issue of Information exchange/sharing has been examined by various researchers over the last 15-20 years. However, there is no research book that compiles various approaches, analyses, key implications, as well as future development of this area. This book will serve as a handbook for researchers who are interested in learning the state of the art of the line of research in this area and explore open research topics in this area. Contributors, all leading researchers, have committed to delivering 18 chapters, broken into four distinct sections covering the Value of Information Sharing, Contracting and Information, Information Signaling, and Incentives for Information Sharing.

Book excerpt: Reacting to increased competition, companies are adopting inter-organizational information systems (IOS) that share information across the supply chain partners; this sharing requires trust. To better understand the phenomenon of trust between partners, we developed an integrated model of trust in supply chains with theoretical underpinnings from Transaction Cost Economics and also with environmental factors like Information Technology and Power. The framework also takes into consideration the association between trust and final outcome measures, such as performance and satisfaction, throughout the supply chain relationship. By assessing the interconnectivity of trust in inter-organizational information systems coupled with environmental factors, our research model will help researchers as well as practitioners develop a more comprehensive and holistic understanding of factors contributing to supply chain success.

Book excerpt: Information technology has radically altered the management of supply chain operations; many business partners who are adjacent on the supply chain can gain from entering inter-organizational information sharing (IOIS) relationships and sharing information that was previously accessible to only one of them. This situation is typical in retailer-supplier logistics management relationships. The first part of our study analyzes different forms of virtual integration-relationships between independent companies that result in some of the operations resembling those of a single vertically integrated firm--and classifies them based on their models of information sharing across the supply chain. We find that there are four primary policies that firms adopt when they exchange information across the supply chain; these are EDI, vendor managed inventory (VMI), continuous replenishment (CR) and category management (CM). Typically, corporations view the development of inter-organizational information systems and the sharing of information as being targeted at increasing operational efficiency by reducing ordering costs, inventory costs and supply lead times. Many studies have focused on studying IOIS technology issues and estimating the value generated from these arrangements using traditional models of inventory and ordering costs. However, we find that in a number of cases, the information shared can have cross-functional value--it can also be used to improve a supplier's production planning and to alter their marketing and sales strategies. Paradoxically, however, suppliers who receive such information feel that not only are their benefits minimal, but they often end up worse off than before the IOIS was implemented. The second part of our study explains this paradox. We show how retailers and other buyers can successfully contract to end up with more value than is generated by the sharing of information. Using game-theoretic models of strategic interaction, we show that this effect intensifies as the competitive value of the information to the supplier's marketing and sales departments increases; we demonstrate how the supplier loses more and more value. Furthermore, the buyer need not actually share the information to derive these rents; we indicate why the possibility of sharing is sufficient, even when the buyer cannot independently create value from that information.

Book excerpt: Firms operating in supply chains face a large degree of operational uncertainty inherited from the external coordination with outside suppliers. Operational uncertainty can be translated to supply disruptions and then costly production disruptions. Reducing supply chain operational uncertainty requires high-quality interorganizational coordination with suppliers. A key to high-quality coordination is a good communication mechanism for information exchange with suppliers. It is a commonly accepted fact now that information technology, especially interorganizational information systems (IOS), can play a significant role in improving interorganizational communication and coordination in supply chains. However, the research pertaining to how to implement such IOS to reduce the operational uncertainty of supply chains has not been adequate. There is a lack of rigorous technical guidelines, in both academics and industrial practice, for building IOS that leads to smooth supply chain operations. The objective of this study is to enhance this field of technical IOS research by (1) developing a technical classification of IT-based interorganizational data exchange in supply chain operations; and, (2) investigating the main effect of IT-based interorganizational data exchange on the operational uncertainty of supply chains, as well as the mediating effect of the redundancy of supplier pool on the relationship between IT-based interorganizational data exchange and the operational uncertainty of supply chains. IT-based interorganizational data exchange was proposed to be a three-order, four-factor construct, varying on the continuum from "intricate" to "simplified". The first second-order sub-construct is Data Interchange Format (Data Specification and Messaging Protocol). The second second-order subconstruct is System Coupling (interface coupling and time coupling). A questionnaire survey was distributed to three industrial clusters (computers and electronics, paper and chemicals) examining the relationships among IT-based interorganizational data exchange, the redundancy of supplier pool and the uncertainty in supply chain operations. The results suggested that simplified IT-based interorganizational data exchange was positively related to the reduced factual uncertainty of supply operations and was negatively related to the redundancy of supplier pool. Meanwhile, IT-based interorganizational data exchange and the redundancy of supplier pool were found to be cooperative suppressors when they were used together to predict the uncertainty of supply chain operations.

I hope this book reaches information managers in the organization now vulnerable to hacks that are stealing corporate information and even holding it hostage for ransom." – Ronald W. Hull, author, poet, and former professor and university administrator A comprehensive entity security program deploys information asset protection through stratified technological and non-technological controls. Controls are necessary for counteracting threats, opportunities, and vulnerabilities risks in a manner that reduces potential adverse effects to defined, acceptable levels. This book presents a methodological approach in the context of normative decision theory constructs and concepts with appropriate reference to standards and the respective guidelines. Normative decision theory attempts to establish a rational framework for choosing between alternative courses of action when the outcomes resulting from the selection are uncertain. Through the methodological application, decision theory techniques can provide objectives determination, interaction assessments, performance estimates, and organizational analysis. A normative model prescribes what should exist according to an assumption or rule.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, Otto Beisheim School of Management Vallendar (Kuehne Foundation Chair of Logistics and Services Management), course: Literature Seminar in Supply Chain Management, language: English, abstract: Today’s business environment is unstable and uncertain. Shorter product life cycles, uncertain demand due to quickly changing customer needs, offshore production, higher supply chain complexity as a consequence of global and severe competition, and fast technological progress are all factors that foster this. “The economic environment is dynamic and the only certainty about it is it will continue to change." To cope with a high degree of uncertainty and increasing supply chain risk a company needs to establish a robust, resilient but still efficient supply chain. Due to the strong competition companies have to be responsive, introduce customized products quickly to the market and constantly work on their internal and external operations in order to gain a competitive advantage. They not only have to offer quality to gain customer satisfaction, but also speed and a reasonable price.
