Book excerpt: This 3-study dissertation explored White children's negotiation of Whiteness, racial identity development, intergroup attitudes, and experiences of socialization. Participants were from an ethnically and racially diverse, rural elementary school in the Midwest United States. In Study 1, I explored the labels that White children (N = 53; Mage = 8.97, SD = 1.72) use to define themselves and their open-ended identity-related beliefs and knowledge. Results revealed that White children most often identified as American or with an ethnic heritage label. White children's identity-related beliefs were grouped into five narratives indicating that some children were still developing identity-related beliefs whereas others' beliefs conformed to dominant ideologies that normalized Whiteness. In Study 2, I examined White children's (N = 53; Mage = 8.97, SD = 1.72) conceptions of and attitudes about ethnic-racial and religious groups and the degree to which they were correlated with child and parent level characteristics. Results indicated that White children reported more social group-related knowledge about ethnic as compared with racial and religious groups and more favorable attitudes about their own as compared with other groups. These dimensions of children's intergroup attitudes were differentially correlated with parent level characteristics: children's conceptions of ethnic-racial and religious groups were related to parents' racial attitudes whereas children's attitudes about these groups were related to parents' comfort with intergroup contact and socialization practices. Using a phenomenological approach in Study 3, I explored White elementary school teachers' (N = 12) attitudes about and strategies for addressing ethnicity, race, and related topics in their classrooms. Results highlighted a paradox in teachers' attitudes and socialization about ethnicity and race. Teachers reported an appreciation for the school-level ethnic and racial diversity, while simultaneously endorsing a colorblind ideology. Additionally, while teachers reported incorporating race-related lessons and conversations, these topics were more frequently discussed in reaction to holidays and student-initiated questions. Taken together, these three studies illustrate the ubiquitous influence of the ideologies of White supremacy and colorblindness on White children's developing understanding of themselves and others. Implications for racial identity development, the racial socialization of White children, and the development of anti-racist White children are discussed.

Much of the current research on racial socialization focuses on how this process occurs for people of color. Little is known about the racial socialization processes of White Americans. The current study was designed to address this gap in the literature. The purpose of this study is to test racial socialization as a predictor of racial attitudes and White racial identity statuses among White Americans. It is hypothesized that racial socialization will significantly predict racial attitudes and White racial identity attitudes, respectively. More specifically, it is hypothesized that individuals who engage in more meaningful racial socialization with their parents will have lower levels of social dominance orientation (SDO) and lower levels of color-blind racial attitudes (CoBRA) than individuals who do not engage in racial socialization with their parents. It is also hypothesized that individuals who engage in more meaningful racial socialization with their parents will have achieved higher levels of White racial identity statuses than those who do not engage in racial socialization with their parents. To test the study hypotheses, the current study was conducted in two parts. In Study 1, a measure of perceived ethnic-racial socialization (Hughes & Johnson, 2001) was validated for use with a White sample. In Study 2, participants completed measures of (a) perceived ethnic-racial socialization for both parents and peers (Hughes & Johnson, 2001); (b) social dominance orientation (Ho et al., 2015); (c) color-blind racial attitudes (Neville, Lilly, Lee, Duran, and Browne, 2000); and (d) White racial identity statuses (Helms & Carter, 1990) in order to test the main study hypotheses. In Study 1, Confirmatory Factor Analysis was used to determine the fit of the perceived racial-ethnic socialization measure to the sample and appropriateness of the addition of four items to the measure. The measure was found to be both valid and reliable with the current sample. In Study 2, hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to examine the predictive relationships of parent and peer socialization with racial attitudes and White racial identity statuses. Results from the regression analyses indicated that parent socialization experiences significantly predicted color-blind racial attitudes, as well as the disintegration and reintegration statuses of White racial identity, in a positive direction. Peer socialization, on the other hand, significantly predicted color-blind racial attitudes, as well as the disintegration and reintegration statuses of White racial identity, in a negative direction. These findings suggest that parent and peer socialization experiences are important in the formation of certain racial attitudes and in the achievement of certain White racial identity statuses, but that other factors may be impacting the development of racial attitudes and racial identity for White American adults. Although the main study hypotheses were not fully supported in the current study, the findings of the study are useful in providing insight into the racial socialization experiences of White Americans and hold implications both for future research of White racial socialization and for the counseling process.

Racial identification has been historically categorized as “either/or” in the U.S. versus “both/and” which can make it difficult for Biracial individuals to racially identify. Prior research has focused primarily on racial identity development among younger Biracial children and youth and has not examined Biracial identity development across the lifespan. Moreover, few researchers have examined the influence of White mothers on their Biracial offspring’s racial identity development and racial socialization process. In order to fill these gaps, this dyadic qualitative phenomenological dissertation study was designed to retrospectively examine the racial identity and parental socialization experiences of eight Biracially identified male and four female adults and their White mothers. This study followed the stages of transcendental phenomenology as described by Moustakas (1994). First a demographic self-report survey was completed (one for the adult child and one for the White mother) and a skin color scale that only adult Biracial children completed. Then, using a semi-structured interview guide eight Biracial adult children (4 females; 4 males who reported lighter skin and between 18 to 42 years old) and their White mothers were first interviewed separately (30 minutes each) and then interviewed together as a dyad. Interviews, emails, and telephone calls were transcribed verbatim; the 24 transcriptions were analyzed using conventional content analysis (Hsieh & Shannon, 2005) and MAXQDA to identify dominant themes. During the second stage of analysis, findings were examined through the lenses of Biracial identity development (Poston, 1990), parental racial socialization (Hughes and Johnson, 2001), and Rockquemore and Laszloffy’s (2005) continuum of Biracial identity perspective. The following seven dominant themes emerged for the eight adult Biracial individual interviews: 1) Influence of White Mother on Racial Identity, 2) Colorism, 3) Racial Landscape of Biracials, 4) Views on Race, 5) Preference/Favoring Whiteness – Physical Attributes, 6) How Biracial children Deal with racism and, 7) Acceptance. The following four dominant themes emerged for the eight White mother interviews: 1) What Race is Your Child?, 2) Colorism, 3) Cultural Collision and, 4) Parenting a Biracial Child. The following four main themes emerged for the eight family interviews: 1) Responsibility and Recommendations for Socializing Biracials, 2) Closeness of Mother-Child Relationship, 3) Colorism and, 4) How the Interracial Family Functions. Noteworthy, despite reporting a close relationship to their Biracial children, most White mothers did not initiate open discussions about race at home or engage in active parental racial socialization. Biracial adult children described reactive socialization experiences (first racial encounters in the community) and most reported not sharing these experiences with their White mothers. Instead they tended to reach out to teachers, siblings, peers, or processed these racial encounters by themselves. Despite not having open conversations about race at home or active parental racial socialization, there were stories of resiliency, love, and connection that can help to inform other interracial families, the field of family therapy, and training programs. Findings suggest helping White mothers of Biracial children engage in proactive, creative (versus reactive) racial socialization practices could help to buffer children from negative racial encounters out in the community. Providers could inform couples about racial identity development, how to openly initiate and talk to Biracial children about being both Black and White, and how to facilitate positive self-esteem. Training programs could also prepare culturally sensitive therapists to work with Biracial families. Many cross sectional studies with Biracial individuals and their parents have been conducted (Biracial children, adolescents, and adults), however, to date no longitudinal studies have been conducted in real time with Biracial children and their White mothers over the life cycle. Longitudinal prospective studies with White mothers and their young Biracial children could help the field develop a better understanding of parental racial socialization practices, as well as Biracial identity development over time.
