Book excerpt: The authors here provide a detailed treatment of the design of robust adaptive controllers for nonlinear systems with uncertainties. They employ a new tool based on the ideas of system immersion and manifold invariance. New algorithms are delivered for the construction of robust asymptotically-stabilizing and adaptive control laws for nonlinear systems. The methods proposed lead to modular schemes that are easier to tune than their counterparts obtained from Lyapunov redesign.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis deals with the design and implementation of an Adaptive Flight Control technique for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The application of UAVs has been increasing exponentially in the last decade both in Military and Civilian fronts. These UAVs fly at very low speeds and Reynolds numbers, have nonlinear coupling, and tend to exhibit time varying characteristics. In addition, due to the variety of missions, they fly in uncertain environments exposing themselves to unpredictable external disturbances. The successful completion of the UAV missions is largely dependent on the accuracy of the control provided by the flight controllers. Thus there is a necessity for accurate and robust flight controllers. These controllers should be able to adapt to the changes in the dynamics due to internal and external changes. From the available literature, it is known that, one of the better suited adaptive controllers is the model based controller. The design and implementation of model based adaptive controller is discussed in the thesis. A critical issue in the design and application of model based control is the online identification of the UAV dynamics from the available sensors using the onboard processing capability. For this, proper instrumentation in terms of sensors and avionics for two platforms developed at UNSW@ADFA is discussed. Using the flight data from the remotely flown platforms, state space identification and fuzzy identification are developed to mimic the UAV dynamics. Real time validations using Hardware in Loop (HIL) simulations show that both the methods are feasible for control. A finer comparison showed that the accuracy of identification using fuzzy systems is better than the state space technique. The flight tests with real time online identification confirmed the feasibility of fuzzy identification for intelligent control. Hence two adaptive controllers based on the fuzzy identification are developed. The first adaptive controller is a hybrid indirect adaptive controller that utilises the model sensitivity in addition to output error for adaptation. The feedback of the model sensitivity function to adapt the parameters of the controller is shown to have beneficial effects, both in terms of convergence and accuracy. HIL simulations applied to the control of roll stabilised pitch autopilot for a typical UAV demonstrate the improvements compared to the direct adaptive controller. Next a novel fuzzy model based inversion controller is presented. The analytical approximate inversion proposed in this thesis does not increase the computational effort. The comparisons of this controller with other controller for a benchmark problem are presented using numerical simulations. The results bring out the superiority of this technique over other techniques. The extension of the analytical inversion based controller for multiple input multiple output problem is presented for the design of roll stabilised pitch autopilot for a UAV. The results of the HIL simulations are discussed for a typical UAV. Finally, flight test results for angle of attack control of one of the UAV platforms at UNSW@ADFA are presented. The flight test results show that the adaptive controller is capable of controlling the UAV suitably in a real environment, demonstrating its robustness characteristics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the results of the second workshop on Neural Adaptive Control Technology, NACT II, held on September 9-10, 1996, in Berlin. The workshop was organised in connection with a three-year European-Union-funded Basic Research Project in the ESPRIT framework, called NACT, a collaboration between Daimler-Benz (Germany) and the University of Glasgow (Scotland). The NACT project, which began on 1 April 1994, is a study of the fundamental properties of neural-network-based adaptive control systems. Where possible, links with traditional adaptive control systems are exploited. A major aim is to develop a systematic engineering procedure for designing neural controllers for nonlinear dynamic systems. The techniques developed are being evaluated on concrete industrial problems from within the Daimler-Benz group of companies. The aim of the workshop was to bring together selected invited specialists in the fields of adaptive control, nonlinear systems and neural networks. The first workshop (NACT I) took place in Glasgow in May 1995 and was mainly devoted to theoretical issues of neural adaptive control. Besides monitoring further development of theory, the NACT II workshop was focused on industrial applications and software tools. This context dictated the focus of the book and guided the editors in the choice of the papers and their subsequent reshaping into substantive book chapters. Thus, with the project having progressed into its applications stage, emphasis is put on the transfer of theory of neural adaptive engineering into industrial practice. The contributors are therefore both renowned academics and practitioners from major industrial users of neurocontrol.

Book excerpt: Written as a result of a seven year research project using computational intelligence techniques for solving mineral processing problems at the U.S. Bureau of Mines, this book is about intelligent, adaptive process control. It brings together ideas from the field of computational intelligence , a part of the larger field of artificial intelligence, including fuzzy mathematics, genetic algorithms, and neural networks and uses these ideas to develop a generic architecture for accomplishing adaptive process control. In the development of this architecture, the requisite tools are described and then demonstrated on a number of problems. Moreover, most of the examples are of interest in industrial settings (although some simple examples are provided in the beginning so that the reader can focus on technique and not be overburdened with the complexity of the problems being solved.) The focus of Practical Applications of Computational Intelligence for Adaptive Control is on practical applications. It provides practicing engineers and scientists with the information they need to solve process control problems in industry and academia. If the reader is interested in solving difficult control problems or interested in the mechanics of basic computational intelligence techniques, then this book is an excellent place to start.

Book excerpt: Adaptive control is the control method used by a controller which must adapt to a controlled system with parameters which vary, or are initially uncertain. An adaptive control system utilizes on-line identification of which either system parameter or controller parameter, which does not need a priori information about the bounds on these uncertain or time-varying parameters. These approaches consider their control design in the sense of Lyapunov. Besides, there are still some branches by combining adaptive control and other control methods, i.e., nonlinear control methods, intelligent control methods, and predict control methods, to name but a few. Addresses some original contributions reporting the latest advances in adaptive control. It aims to gather the latest research on state-of-the-art methods, applications and research for the adaptive control theory, and recent new findings obtained by the technique of adaptive control. Apparently, the book cannot include all research topics. Different aspects of adaptive control are explored. Chapters includes some new tendencies and developments in research on a adaptive formation controller for multi-robot systems; L1 adaptive control design of the the longitudinal dynamics of a hypersonic vehicle model; adaptive high-gain control of biologically inspired receptor systems; adaptive residual vibration suppression of sigid-flexible coupled systems; neuro-hierarchical sliding mode control for under-actuated mechanical systems; neural network adaptive PID control design based on PLC for a water-level system; and fuzzy-based design of networked control systems with random time delays and packet dropout in the forward communication channel--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robust and Adaptive Control shows the reader how to produce consistent and accurate controllers that operate in the presence of uncertainties and unforeseen events. Driven by aerospace applications the focus of the book is primarily on continuous-dynamical systems. The text is a three-part treatment, beginning with robust and optimal linear control methods and moving on to a self-contained presentation of the design and analysis of model reference adaptive control (MRAC) for nonlinear uncertain dynamical systems. Recent extensions and modifications to MRAC design are included, as are guidelines for combining robust optimal and MRAC controllers. Features of the text include: · case studies that demonstrate the benefits of robust and adaptive control for piloted, autonomous and experimental aerial platforms; · detailed background material for each chapter to motivate theoretical developments; · realistic examples and simulation data illustrating key features of the methods described; and · problem solutions for instructors and MATLAB® code provided electronically. The theoretical content and practical applications reported address real-life aerospace problems, being based on numerous transitions of control-theoretic results into operational systems and airborne vehicles that are drawn from the authors’ extensive professional experience with The Boeing Company. The systems covered are challenging, often open-loop unstable, with uncertainties in their dynamics, and thus requiring both persistently reliable control and the ability to track commands either from a pilot or a guidance computer. Readers are assumed to have a basic understanding of root locus, Bode diagrams, and Nyquist plots, as well as linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, and the use of state-space methods in analysis and modeling of dynamical systems. Robust and Adaptive Control is intended to methodically teach senior undergraduate and graduate students how to construct stable and predictable control algorithms for realistic industrial applications. Practicing engineers and academic researchers will also find the book of great instructional value.

The field of intelligent control has been expanded very much during the recent years and a solid body of theoretical and practical results are now available. These results have been obtained through the synergetic fusion of concepts and techniques from a variety of fields such as automatic control, systems science, computer science, neurophysiology and operational research. Intelligent control systems have to perform anthropomorphic tasks fully autonomously or interactively with the human under known or unknown and uncertain environmental conditions. Therefore the basic components of any intelligent control system include cognition, perception, learning, sensing, planning, numeric and symbolic processing, fault detection/repair, reaction, and control action. These components must be linked in a systematic, synergetic and efficient way. Predecessors of intelligent control are adaptive control, self-organizing control, and learning control which are well documented in the literature. Typical application examples of intelligent controls are intelligent robotic systems, intelligent manufacturing systems, intelligent medical systems, and intelligent space teleoperators. Intelligent controllers must employ both quantitative and qualitative information and must be able to cope with severe temporal and spatial variations, in addition to the fundamental task of achieving the desired transient and steady-state performance. Of course the level of intelligence required in each particular application is a matter of discussion between the designers and users. The current literature on intelligent control is increasing, but the information is still available in a sparse and disorganized way.
