Book excerpt: This monograph provides empirical evidence on the relationship between intellectual capital (IC) and organizational performance of social cooperative enterprises (SCEs) that work in the non-profit sector. The author presents a survey of a sample of SCEs located in Italy to identify the main components of IC for SCEs and to investigate the effect of IC sub-dimensions on a firm's performance. The book thus presents new empirical evidence on IC in non-profit organizations along with a revelation of the main value drivers by using the survey method as an IC measurement tool combined with a principal components analysis. Finally, considering the difficulties related to the data gathering process in the non-profit sector and in measuring intangible assets, this book helps in increasing the understanding of IC features with a focus on the hybrid organization as SCEs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the essential guide for managers wishing to implement the benefits of Intellectual Capital thinking in their companies or divisions. It serves as an easily accessible introduction to the subject area for the novice, giving the gist of what it is about and how it has developed, but above all it gives hands-on instructions on how to incorporate intellectual capital thinking in everyday business and how to use the tools provided for the management and measurement of intangible resources. Throughout the main part of the book, three different cases in separate boxes run in parallel with the body text. These are introduced in chapter 2 and illustrate how the tools are to be used, depending on what type of company wishes to implement these ideas. The three case companies are characterised as a manufacturing company, an R&D organisation and a network company. Smaller case stories about well-known global companies are also interspersed throughout the book.

Book excerpt: This study aims to investigate the impact of intellectual capital (IC) on corporate performance of IT companies listed on Borsa Istanbul for the period of 2004-2015. Value Added Intellectual Coefficient (VAIC) approach was applied to measure Intellectual Capital Efficiency (ICE). Corporate performance was calculated using traditional accounting tools involving; Market, Productivity, and Financial performance. The findings showed that human capital efficiency is the most effective factor in the issue of value creation than structural capital and capital employed for the study period before and after the crisis 2008. Structural capital efficiency does not play a considerable role invalue creation before and after the crisis. While Capital employed efficiency was not considered as an engine to value creation before the crisis, but it played a key role of value creation after the crisis.
Book Synopsis Making Sense of Intellectual Capital by : Daniel Andriessen
Download or read book Making Sense of Intellectual Capital written by Daniel Andriessen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-02-18 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Drucker has introduced us all to the knowledge era, where knowledge is the primary resource and intangibles (intellectual capital resources and assets) are now largely recognized as the most important sources of organizations' competitive advantage. With the recognition of the importance of Intangibles comes the problem of how to properly identify them and assign them a value within the corporation. This is an area of concern in 5 fields: 1) accounting and financial reporting, 2) performance measurement and management, 3) valuation in the finance field, 4) the Human Resources field in terms of management, strategy, and planning, and 5) Intellectual Capital. Over the past eight years, over 25 methods have been proposed for the valuation of intangibles coming out of these 5 fields. In this book, Andriessen evaluates 25 existing methods of intangible valuation according to highly developed criteria. In performing his evaluations, Andriessen synthesizes the state of the art research from these fields based on extensive research. He then presents his own method for valuing intangibles, which he began developing and testing as a Senior Manager at KPMG Knowledge Advisory Services in The Netherlands. He relates six case studies in which this method was tested in actual companies, carefully reviews the results of his tests, and then concludes by offering a new and improved method for valuing intangibles in his Weightless Wealth Toolkit, a complete step-by-step process for identifying, valuing, and managing Intangibles to help managers operate successfully in the Intangible Economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: In recent years a significant number of Intellectual Capital (IC) metrics has been developed and applied in many organizations. However, there is still a strong need to specify the relations among the different categories of intellectual assets that exist in the context of a SME, and to determine the way these assets affect financial performance. This paper has a dual scope; firstly, to specify these relations, and, secondly, to explore the impact of IC on corporate performance.Methodology/Approach: Our hypotheses are tested through a survey conducted on Greek knowledge-intensive SMEs of the service sector. We combined firms' perceptions regarding Intellectual Capital categories, which were measured through the answers given on a structured questionnaire, and accounting data that was gathered from financial databases.Findings: Our findings indicate that the interaction of certain categories of intellectual assets in SMEs is in some aspects different from the pattern evidenced in other surveys that analyze large companies. Also, our empirical data provides supportive evidence that certain categories of intellectual capital positively contribute to corporate performance.
Book Synopsis The Dynamics of Intellectual Capital in Current Era by : Muhammad Shahbaz
Download or read book The Dynamics of Intellectual Capital in Current Era written by Muhammad Shahbaz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an authoritative, inter-disciplinary, and up-to-date survey of relevant concepts, research areas, and applications of intellectual capital. Until now, the literature had lacked a comprehensive analysis of intellectual capital (IC) in regard to sustainability, block chain, and other related technologies and virtual environments. This book shows the importance of intellectual capital for contemporary organizations: how it contributes to theories of the firm, how it affects organizational performance, how is it linked with the organizational ambidexterity, how it connects to the technological developments like block chain and digital technologies, and what would be its association with sustainability. Central to our thesis is the systemic nature of intellectual capital in organizations: how intellectual capital interacts with and complements other organizational resources and developments. This book also shows as to how applying the notion of intellectual capital to organizations requires us to consider how intangible forms of capital differ from more traditional forms, implying the need for a theory of firm that accommodates a concept of dynamic, heterogeneous intellectual capital. Although a lot has been written on IC, this book proves to be the first with scholastic and action-oriented perspective on as to how a firm can manage its IC to create value. This book also demonstrates as to how the subjective aspects of IC can be measured and what can be their strategic implications. A discussion on IC disclosure also appears in the latter part of the book. In doing so, this book reveals as to how the value creation of today’s businesses is driven by the IC. This book also introduces the readers to the new application of IC and its association with the contemporary disruptive technologies. This is a book for IC researchers and academicians who want to understand the diverse aspects of IC, for business managers who want to be at the cutting edge, for those early in their careers who seek a challenging new path, and for the top-level managers of the world who have their eye on the future.

Book excerpt: This article examines, using various econometric techniques, the impact of intellectual capital (IC) on the performance of Egyptian insurance companies listed between 2006 and 2011. We measure IC using the Value Added Intellectual Coefficient (VAIC) approach and its components developed by Pulic (2000), and both a direct and a moderating relationship between VAIC and corporate performance are investigated. Our results show a direct relationship between (IC-VAIC) and the performance of Egyptian insurance companies, particularly with capital employed efficiency (CEE), and to a lesser extent with human capital efficiency. In addition, a positive relationship between IC (capital employed and structural capital) and performance in the prior and current years is found. Evidence also suggests the possibility of a moderating relationship between IC and physical and financial capital, which in turn impacts on corporate performance. Our study also reveals the importance of taking into account any unobservable heterogeneity and endogeneity issues when analyzing corporate performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vast literature has developed over the last 20 years on human capital and intellectual capital. Most of the works in the literature deal with the definition of human capital, structural capital, and relational capital. Human capital is often examined in conjunction with intellectual capital and in particular as a possible variable that can explain the performance of firms. The objective of this chapter is to present the results of some empirical evidence on the relationship between intellectual capital (IC) and financial performance. In particular, the chapter will illustrate some of the most significant studies in the literature and in addition will report the results of an analysis conducted in Italy during the period 2002-2011 on a sample of 43 listed companies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, Northumbria University, language: English, abstract: This thesis investigates the relationship between corporate intellectual ability and performance. The link between intellectual capital and corporate performance has been advocated for decades, however, empirical studies failed to fully acknowledge this relationship. For the conduct of this thesis, data has been collected for 1780 business years from companies of all industries from 5 developed countries. The contribution of this thesis has been the analysis of data from not only one country or certain industries, but the analysis of an extensive dataset, without making separations of industries, in order to obtain general results. During the last decades, our economy was undergoing a crucial change. This change affects the production of goods and services as well as the value of the goods and services. It is the change of the balance between the resources which are exploited by companies. It is the shift from material resources to knowledge, the shift from quantity to quality - the shift which manifests itself in the change of the way value is being created. Caused by these environmental changes, research activities in the field of intellectual capital (IC) emerged. It was advocated, that the new environment now requires proper IC management in order to succeed in the market. Since the end of the 90’s, the strategic importance and management of IC are well advocated. Several authors associated corporate performance with an efficient management of IC.

Book excerpt: Beginning appropriately with an executive summary, this guide to the new business world introduces an intellectual capital approach. The Scandinavian editors define IC "as a language for thinking, talking and doing something about the drivers of companies' future earnings." Such a new language entails new measures (the IC-index approach), ways to connect to shareholder value, and ultimately, a new meaning of management.
