Book excerpt: The Miocene stratigraphic succession on the middle to outer continental shelf off New Jersey, immediately south of the Hudson Canyon, is examined using high-resolution 2D multichannel seismic (MCS) and log data to evaluate sequence stratigraphic models, aided by results of Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 313. High sedimentation, associated with extensive progradation and aggradation, provides a higher resolution record in this region than elsewhere on the shelf. The study of 29 MCS profiles and 4 gamma-ray logs identified and loop-correlated 14 Miocene sequences. Based on log interpretations, highstand systems tracts are associated with most of these 14 sequences; only 3 (sequences A, C, D) exhibit lowstand and transgressive systems tracts. Topset and foreset deposits on the middle to outer continental shelf are thicker than those on the inner shelf due to pronounced aggradation and progradation. This pattern is attributed to middle to late Miocene deltaic progradation and migration combined with sediment compaction and loading that created the accommodation space for these especially thick shallow-marine deposits. Seismic profiles provide a means of anticipating sedimentary facies based on the vertical and lateral arrangement of reflectors within sequences, even in the absence of geologic samples and wireline log measurements. This study evaluates models of sequence stratigraphic evolution by utilizing high sedimentation rates, gamma-ray logs and seismic profiles available in this area. Sequence A shows the importance of drill site data. Using cores and logs, IODP Exp313 showed the maximum flooding surface is the first major downlap surface within sequence A, implying this interval is dominated by thick highstand deposits. By contrast, the widely cited Exxon model predicts that this and all sequences have thick lowstand units containing multiple flooding surfaces, overlain by comparatively thin highstand deposits. Furthermore, the present study showed not all sequences are alike. Shell-632 gamma-ray data reveals thick lowstand and transgressive strata in sequence D, and thin highstand strata consistent with the Exxon model. In contrast, many other sequences examined here have thin lowstand and transgressive systems tracts either below seismic resolution or absent, and thick highstand systems tracts that agree with the model built on Expedition 313 studies.

Book excerpt: Using a sequence stratigraphic framework, I investigated lower Miocene Kirkwood Formation sequences Kw1a and Kw1b in onshore New Jersey coastal plain coreholes and their relationship to their coeval offshore sequences m5.8 and m5.7, respectively, on the New Jersey continental shelf. I used corehole and gamma log data from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 150X Cape May and Leg 174AX Ocean View sites to evaluate the anatomy of sequences Kw1a and Kw1b by identifying gamma log stacking patterns, lithologic changes/stacking patterns, Sr-isotope data, chronostratigraphic data, bioturbation, indurated zones, and stratal surfaces (i.e., maximum flooding surfaces [MFS], transgressive surfaces [TS], and sequence boundaries). At Cape May, I found that Kw1a is a composite sequence containing three higher order sequences (Kw1a1, Kw1a2, and Kw1a3), similar to its counterpart at Ocean View. Sequence m5.8 at Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 313 Site M27 was reinterpreted by integrating Oc270 line 529 seismic data with core and gamma log data, and two possible interpretations at Site M27 are presented here: 1) m5.8 is a single ~1 Myr scale sequence or 2) m5.8 is a ~1 Myr scale composite sequence containing at least two ~100-400 ka scale higher order sequences. Loop correlationsSeismic-core-well log integration analysis suggest that at the AMCOR 6011 site, sequence m5.8 (Kw1a) is a composite sequence. I integrated seismic, core, and well log data to test the physical correlation between the offshore and onshore sequences in question. I correlated onshore sequences Kw1a and Kw1b using the gamma logs of coastal plain and nearshore sites Cape May, Ocean View, Cape May Zoo, Sea Isle City, Strathmere, Atlantic City, ACOW 1, ACOW 2, and AMCOR 6011. I integrated onshore, nearshore, and offshore core and gamma log data with R/V Cape Hatteras 0698 (CH0698) and R/V Oceanus 270 (Oc270) multichannel seismic (MCS) profile grids and loop correlated seismic sequence boundaries along the seismic profiles and demonstrated that sequences Kw1a and Kw1b physically correlate to m5.8 and m5.7, respectively.

Book excerpt: Shallowly-buried channel systems have been imaged on the New Jersey Shelf with high-resolution seismic imaging. These channels formed as riverine systems that occupied the exposed shelf during the Last Glacial Maximum, ~18 ka. Subsequent sea level rise ~15-12 ka modified the valleys, forming estuaries and filling the channels with estuarine sediments. The infill sediments within the channel provide evidence for the response of the shelf to the Late Pleistocene glacio-eustatic sea level rise, but little work has been done on samples from these strata. This study aids in the ground-truthing of previous stratigraphic results by analyzing the cores collected within the infill sediments. The seismic stratigraphy of fill sediments from the mid-shelf and outer-shelf channels are structurally dissimilar. The mid-shelf channel fill stratigraphy is dominated by finely-laminated U-shaped reflectors throughout the section, with cut and fill geometries. In contrast, the outer shelf channel fill stratigraphy is a well-ordered sequence of 4 identifiable, primarily flat-lying seismic units. We collected five cores in mid-shelf channels (~30 m water depth), one in an outer shelf channel (~80 m of water depth) and one core in the trangressive ravinement surface. Cores were logged for density and seismic velocity. Grain size analysis was conducted by settling column and laser particle size analyzer. Radiocarbon analysis of the stratigraphy was conducted with the shell fragments and organic mud within the samples. The foraminiferal assemblages aided in determining the depositional environment. Using these data I investigated the differences in depositional environment of the mid- and outer-shelf channels systems, and consider these results in the context of sedimentary models for estuarine processes. The radiocarbon dates and foraminiferal are consistent with channel infill in an estuarine environment. Grain size and density log data indicate that the mid-shelf channel fills are sandier than the outer-shelf channel fills, which leads me to infer that the sediment from the mid-shelf channels was deposited in a higher energy environment than that of the sediment in the outer shelf channels. The stratigraphic differences and locations of the channel systems are similar to the Zaitlin (1994) model of incised valley infill, but infill of the mid-shelf channel system could possibly be the result of a catastrophic meltwater flood event occurring ~14 ka as glacial lakes to the north broke their dams and flooded the mid-shelf.

The aim of drilling on the shelf was to determine the age of the sedimentary sequences and to ground truth previous interpretations of the depositional environment (i.e., topsets and foresets) of progradational seismostratigraphic sequences S1, S2, S3, and S4. The ultimate objective was to obtain a better understanding of the history of glacial advances and retreats in this west Antarctic margin. Drilling the topsets of the progradational wedge (0-247 m below seafloor [mbsf]), which consist of unsorted and unconsolidated materials of seismic Unit S1, was very unfavorable, resulting in very low (2.3%) core recovery. Recovery improved (34%) below 247 mbsf, corresponding to sediments of seismic Unit S3, which have a consolidated matrix. Logs were only obtained from the interval between 75 and 244 mbsf, and inconsistencies on the automatic analog picking of the signals received from the sonic log at the array and at the two other receivers prevented accurate shipboard time-depth conversions. This, in turn, limited the capacity for making seismic stratigraphic interpretations at this site and regionally. This study is an attempt to compile all available data sources, perform quality checks, and introduce nonstandard processing techniques for the logging data obtained to arrive at a reliable and continuous depth vs. velocity profile. We defined 13 data categories using differential traveltime information. Polynomial exclusion techniques with various orders and low-pass filtering reduced the noise of the initial data pool and produced a definite velocity depth profile that is synchronous with the resistivity logging data. A comparison of the velocity profile produced with various other logs of Site 1103 further validates the presented data. All major logging units are expressed within the new velocity data. A depth-migrated section with the new velocity data is presented together with the original time section and initial depth estimates published within the Leg 178 Initial Reports volume. The presented data confirms the location of the shelf unconformity at 222 ms two-way traveltime (TWT), or 243 mbsf, and allows its seismic identification as a strong negative and subsequent positive reflection.

Many coastal areas are also heavily urbanized, a fact that makes the need for freshwater even more acute. Coastal aquifers are highly sensitive to disturbances. Inappropriate management of a coastal aquifer may lead to its destruction as a source for freshwater much earlier than other aquifers which are not connected to the sea. The reason is the threat of seawater intrusion. In many coastal aquifers, intrusion of seawater has become one of the major constraints imposed on groundwater utilization. As sea water intrusion progresses, existing pumping wells, especially those close to the coast, become saline and have to be abandoned. Also, the area above the intruding seawater wedge is lost as a source of natural replenishment to the aquifer. Despite the importance of this subject, so far there does not exist a book that integrates our present knowledge of seawater intrusion, its occurrences, physical mechanism, chemistry, exploration by geo physical and geochemical techniques, conceptual and mathematical modeling, analytical and numerical solution methods, engineering measures of combating seawater intrusion, management strategies, and experience learned from case studies.
